I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play. When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought Id make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didnt expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isnt. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was pletely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand lifes challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual. 21. Different from other coaches, Coach Brian _. A. concentrated on skill training B. expected the team to do well in their studies C. trained the team to the edge of death D. asked the team to do more reading than training22. The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means _. A. paid no attentionB. showed no interest C. made less effort D. had less passion23. In the authors eye, Coach Brian is _. A. professional and serious B. hardworking and honest C. skilled and cruelD. strict and helpful BNot all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares. Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France . The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced , not that the memories are wiped out . They are not sure to what degree peoples memories are affected. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.“Some memories can ruin peoples lives. They e back to you when you dont want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually e with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.” But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change peoples memories and changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past. “All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are . Im not sure we want to wipe those memories out.” Said Rebcca Dresser , a medical ethicist.24.The passage is mainly about .A. a new medical invention B. a new research on the pill .C. a way of wiping out painful memories D. an argument about the research on the pill25. The drug tested on people can . A. cause the brain to fix memories B. stop people remembering bad experiences C. prevent body producing certain chemicals D. wipe out the emotional effect of memories 26.We can infer from the passage that . A. people doubt the effect of the pills B. the pills will certainly stop peoples emotional memories C. taking the pill will do harm to peoples physical healthD. the pill has already been produced and used by the public in the US27. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with in the last paragraph?A. Some memories can ruin peoples lives. B. People want to get rid of bad memories .C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others. D. The pill will reduce peoples sufferings from bad memories. CWith around 100 students scheduled to be in that 9:00 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them are still awake after the first 15 minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pyjamas(睡衣). Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule. All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting(警报) systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep. This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight . Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be classified as “early birds” the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.28. What does the author stress in Paragraph 1 ?A. Many students are absent from class.B. Students are very tired on Monday mornings.C. Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well.D. Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays.29. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?A . Most students prefer to get up late in the morning.B. Students dont sleep well because of alerting systems.C .Ones body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently.D. Adolescents delayed sleep/wake cycle isnt the preferred pattern.30. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “classified”?A. Criticized B. Grouped C. Organized D. Named31. What does the text mainly talk about?A. Functions of the body clock. B. The “night owl” phenomenon.C. Human beings sleep behaviour. D. The school schedule of “early birds”. DImagine a world in which there were suddenly no emotion a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among panions, or bonds among members of groups. Societys economic underpinnings (支柱) would be destroyed: since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive (动力) to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind, for as we will see, incentives mean a capacity to enjoy them.In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instruments of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True, we consider the length, shape, size or texture, but an objects physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, munities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experience with objects and events es a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are good and others are bad, and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society uses our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself. It gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, and uses the legal penal (刑法的) system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts.32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?A. people would not be able to tell the physical aspects of objects. B. People would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful to them. C. $ 10 million is equal to $ 10 in a world without emotions. D. There would be full of lies, arguments and violence. 33. In can be inferred from the passage that the economic foundation of society is dependent on _.A. the ability to make money B. the capacity to workC. the motivation to work D. our emotional experiences34. Why are the emotional aspects of an object more important than its physical aspects?A. They help society use its members for more profit. B. They encourage us to perform important tasks in the war.C. They help to perfect the legal and penal system to make people afraid.D. They help us adapt our behaviors to the world surrounding us.35. What is the text mainly about?A. People could only live in a world with emotions. B. People would always do bad things in the emotionless world. C. Emotions are very important in the world. D. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。The new term is ing up, and we have all promised ourselves to be much better students this time.
