I was just searching for my gift.”说明爸爸错怪了孩子,感觉很糟。hopeless无望inspired受到激励的encouraged受到鼓励的。30根据上文,爸爸觉得愧疚,I hugged Keith and asked him to 55 me.因此是请求孩子原谅“forgive”,support支持criticize批评suspect怀疑。31爸爸问了另一个孩子同样的问题,选the same。C32Kevin和Keith都是作者的儿子,那他们就是兄弟了。33后面说I took my two sons to the store that day and bought them what I had promised. Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside subjects like maths and languages. The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and count from one to ten: one begins, the next voice es from the far right, a third from the other side. The aim is to listen for an opportunity to shout the number without clashing(冲突) with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in. But by the fifth round, they develop a rhythm. The message: giving other people space but also confidently claiming your own space is a requirement for social well-being.While the game suggests a soft course for the less bright, the school says it is trying to make it affect even clever pupils. The Willy Hellpach School is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course, intended for 17-19-year-olds preparing for university-entrance exams. “The course isnt there to make you happy,” Ernst Fritz-Schubert, the school principal, warned the pupils who were taking the course, “but rather to help you discover the ways to bee happy.” Cooking a meal together will be one of the class exercises, along with improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses.“In the first period, we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people or teasing,” said Fanny, 17.The message: self-esteem(自尊) improves happiness too.The course is taught for three periods a week and will be graded as a part of overall assessment. Despite the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter. Max, 18, says he is happy when he finds people who share his interests. Janina, 18, says she needs to be fit to feel happy.“We want to show how proper food or exercise can help in being happy,” the principal said. He hopes other schools in Germany will copy the idea. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sum needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long- term projects. Whenever anyone said anything, Id think of a way to disagree. Id push back hard if something didnt fit my world-view.Its like I had to be first with an opinionas if being first meant something. But what it really meant was that I wasnt thinking hard enough about the problem. The faster you react, the less you think. Not always, but often. This came to a head back in xx. I was speaking at the Business Innovation Factory conference in Providence, RI. So was Richard Saul Wurman. After my talk Richard came up to introduce himself and pliment my talk. That was very generous of him. He certainly didnt have to do that. And what did I do? I pushed back at him about the talk he gave. While he was making his points on stage, I was taking an inventory of the things I didnt agree with. And when presented with an opportunity to speak with him, I quickly pushed back at some of his ideas. I must have seemed like such an asshole. His response changed my life. It was a simple thing. He said “Man, give it five minutes.” I asked him what he meant by that? He said, its fine to disagree, its fine to push back, its great to have strong opinions and beliefs, but give my ideas some time to set in before youre sure you want to argue against them. “Five minutes” represented “think”, not react. He was totally right. I came into the discussion looking to prove something, not learn something. This was a big moment for me.Richard has spent his career thinking about these problems. Hes given it 30 years. And I gave it just a few minutes. Now, certainly he can be wrong and I could be right, but its better to think deeply about something first before being so certain youre right.Theres also a difference between asking questions and pushing back. Pushing back means you already think you know. Asking questions means you want to know. Ask more questions.Learning to think first rather than react quick is a life-long pursuit. Its tough. I still get hot sometimes when I shouldnt. But Im really enjoying all the benefits of getting better. If you arent sure why this is important, think about this quote from Jonathan Ive regarding Steve Jobs reverence(respect) for ideas:And just as Steve loved ideas, and loved making stuff, he treated the process of creativity with a rare and a wonderful reverence. You see, I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily missed, so easily promised, so easily just squished.Thats deep. Ideas are fragile. They often start powerless. Theyre barely there, so easy to ignore or skip or miss. There are two things in this world that take no skill: 1. Spending ot
