Ive always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situation Ive found myself in. My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old. She and I got to the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed. “Ill be right back.” she said. She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me” Do you have money for me, son?” she said. “Ill need to be paid.”I didnt realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed. By the time my mom returned, I was angry.” You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I had nothing to give her !”Now that Im an adult, youll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet. I want to be prepared in case I need it. Ive always admired people who are over-prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector and in the middle of his talk, the light bulb (灯泡) on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new projector. “Its Okay.” He announced. ” Theres nothing to worry about.”We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out. He had brought along a spare bulb for the Overhead projector. Who could even think of that?I often told my students, “When you go into the wilderness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you.” And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared. 21. Why did the cashier ask a seven-year-old boy to pay for the purchases?A. The boy was shopping by himself. B. The boys mother asked her to do so. C. The cashier was playing a joke on him. D. The boys mother was away for something else. 22. Why did Norman bring a spare bulb with him?A. He was always well-prepared. B. His presentation was about bulbs. C. He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality. D. He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out. 23. What do the two stories tell us?A. Accidents happen almost every day. B. Money is the key that opens all doors. C. In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day. D. Chances favor those who are well-prepared. BIt was once mon to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics. In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the decline of class and classless society in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class. But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification. One unchanging aspect of a British persons class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice, Most people said this accent sounded educated and soft. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional(地区的)city accents. These accents were seen as mon and ugly. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice. In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class being unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song mon People puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may want to live like mon people they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life. 24. A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain _. A. it is time to end class distinctionB. most people belong to middle classC. it is easy to recognize a persons classD. people regard themselves socially different25. The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _. A. variety B. division C. authority D. qualification26. British attitudes towards accent _. A. have a long traditionB. are based on regional statusC. are shared by the AmericansD. have changed in recent years27. What is the main idea of the passage?A. The middle class is expandingB. A persons accent reflects his classC. Class is a key part of British societyD. Each class has unique characteristics. CWhen people think of Hollywood, they think of the city where dreams e true. This did not apply to F. Scott Fitzgerald, a screenwriter who had his share of ups and downs in this land. Fitzgerald was not a successful Hollywood writer because he was not good at the career path he chose. He was an amazing novelist, but his efforts of turning them into screenplays ended in disappointment and confusion. It was because of a lack of potential for screenwriting as well as his addiction and desire to be famous.Growing up as a boy, Fitzgerald went to movies a lot. He wanted to write stories that would eventually turn into movies. The problem was: just because Fitzgerald wanted to do somethingdidnt necessarily mean that he was good at it. He made his attempts, but most of these efforts ended in disappointment because he thought about the change from script(剧本)to screen too much. His plot was too detailed and plicated; his tone was too serious or his dialogue too sentimental(感伤的). Fitzgeralds quick rise to fame also led to his fall. In life, things are not meant to happen all at once, all that the same time but itdidfor Fitzgerald. At his best time, three ofhisearly stories were made into short films, including The Great Gatsby and Babylon Revisited. As the twenties approached, he was gradually forgotten by the reading public. He became drunk and constantly took pills both to sleep and wake up. His marriage was destroyed and his wife broke down mentally. He seemed unsure about his life. Fitzgerald had another chance at success when many opportunities came his way, including revisions of Emlyn Williams play The Light of Heart and production of one of his own scripts, Cosmopolitan. However, these were allputaside and he was right back where he started, left behind and called a “ruined man”. Fitzgerald simply wanted too much inhislife. He wanted “to be both a great novelist and a Hollywood success, to write songs like Cole Porter and poetry like John Keats”. His addiction to fame heldhimback and led to his failure as a Hollywood writer. 28. Which is a reason that Fitzgerald failed in screenwriting?A. He was not talented in screenwriting. B. He had a miserable family life. C. He spent too much time watching movies. D. He was greedy for money inhislife. 29. Fitzgeralds screenwriting was _. A. disappointing in endingB. plex in plotC. playful in toneD. simple in dialogue30. Which of the following was NOT written by Fitzgerald?A. The Great GatsbyB. Babylon RevisitedC. The Light of HeartD. Cosmopolitan31. When Fitzgerald had another chance at success, he _. A. took full advantage of itB. went back home to start businessC. refused to make changesD. started to write songs and poemsDSurviving the boredom of a school day can be bad enough, but when you have to worry about school gangs as well its enough to make any student want to stay at home and under the covers! Unfortunately, gang culture can be found in many British schools, and it brings with it negative, and dangerous, side effects. The presence of weapons at or near school, the appearance of graffiti on buildings and lockers, and pressure to blow off school work and exams all follow where the gangs lead. None of these things contribute to a good education, but for school gangs thats exactly the point school is for being popular and having fun, not learning anything or preparing for the future. Keep these tips in mind and say goodbye to school gangs. Know your own mind. Often it is those with low self-esteem and a poor self-image who bee victims of school gangs. These students dont know their own mind or have a clear picture of what they would like to do in the future, so it is easy to be influenced by those who dont want to do any work today. Keep yourself busy. School gangs often hang around at or near schools with no real reason. Students who have nothing scheduled can easily be sucked into these groups, but if you are busy, busy, busy and always on the move there will be less chance that youll have the time to stay and “play”. Choose your friends wisely. With a core group of like-minded friends, it is much easier to stay away from school gangs because you simply dont need them. Remember that gangs are a source of power for members, but they can also be a source of intimidation. Work hard and have fun. No one likes a teachers pet, but school gangs in particular hate them. Work hard and have fun at school, but dont annoy anyone with extreme goody-two-shoes (伪君子)behavior. School gangs can be a nightmare if you must deal with them constantly. Stay away from gang hangouts and gang members, and dont involve yourself in any gang related activities. 32. For the school gangs, school is _. A. where they are instructed to behave themselves. B. a good place to prepare for the future. C. where they win popularity and enjoy themselves. D. a place that contributes to a good education. 33. From the authors opinion, gangs lead to the following problems in schools Except _ . A. The presence of weaponsB. the appearance of robberyC. pressure to blow off school work and examD. students scare34. Which statement is Not True according to the passage?A. school gangs are harmful to educationB. students lacking enough intelligence often follow school gangsC. school gangs often wander around schools aimlesslyD. school gangs will provide their member with so-called power35. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Those who focus on study are more likely to stay away from school gangs. B. Whoever knows what he will do in the future can be influenced by school gangs. C. Having a lot to do, you have no chance of getting in touch with school gangs. D. Without good friends, you are sure to end up with school gangs. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(涂卡时,E=A+B; F=A+C; G=A+D)Have you heard about Leap year? Leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365. It normally occurs every four years, always on an even-numbered year. The extra day is added to our shortest month. That is the second month of the year, which in non-leap years has 28 days, two fewer than any other month. 36 .We also call Leap year the bissextile year(闰年). 37 In our calendar system there is a need for a leap year because the so1ar year (the time it takes the earth to go around the sun once) is actually slightly more than 365 days long. That extra dayFeb 29 every four yearshelps correct the difference between our calendar and the solar calendar. It is said that Leap year was first made part of the calendar by the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar. His astronomers had calculated the length of the solar year to be 365 days and six hours. So Caesar declared that an extra day be added to the calendar. 38 However,Caesars adjustment was not pletely accurate because his astronomers year exceeded the true solar year by eleven minutes and fourteen seconds. By 1582, a difference of ten days had developed between the calendar year and the true solar year. To correct this error,Pope Gregory X III ruled that every fourth year would continue to be a leap year except for century years that could not be divided evenly by 400. By this system, century years such as 1700,1800,and 1900 were not leap years, but the year xx was a leap year 39 .People born on Feb 29 celebrate their growing up a little differently from the rest of us. 40 But if they go strictly by the calendar, they have only one-fourth as many birthday celebrations as most people. A. They acknowledge that they get older each year. B. when you see Feb 29 on a calendar, you know that year is a leap year. C. This is its formal or scientific title. D. This may seem plicated, but it works. E. In a leap year, the extra day is added to the second month, giving it 29 instead of the usual 28 days. F. The leap year was introduced in the Julian calendar in 46 BC. G. This is done every four years. 第三部分:英语知识运用 (共三节,满分45分)第一节:完形填空(共20小题,每小题1分,满分20分)Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!
