She was different from other customers who passed her by. Some didnt see her because she wasnt fit in the “bar scene” and others because her physical condition made her differentshe was born with a disabilityher left leg was shorter than the right when she walked. It was the “difference” that drew me to her. The woman didnt feel embarrassed. Instead, she was self-confident and full of life. Have you ever seen a person who just looked as though he knew something that you didnt know? Well, that was exactly how she looked as she smiled from the moment she went to her table to the moment she left. How did she own this quality while other customers did not? Other customers drank and talked about the trouble they met. she did not. Other customers plained about the “unfair” life. she did not. Other customers found courage in a bottle.she did not. There was no dancing for her. However, she saw obvious value and pleasure in just being there. This woman showed such appreciation, confidence and consideration at the moment. Faced with great adversityher disability, this young woman clearly did better not worse; faced with her tragedy(悲剧), she realized that she needed to make a decision to be better, and not worse, while so called “normal” people cant even see the existence of other choices. Whatever the ease may be, dont miss the wonderful gift that this young woman has given to me and also given you: you have a choice to find pleasure in every moment and to move towards a purpose that provides you with satisfaction. 1What attracted the authors attention in the bar?AA beautiful young woman. B When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks to win a highly petitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard:The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April. Liz Murray, a 22-yea-rold American girl, has been writing a reallife story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug addicted parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it. Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. “What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,” she wrote in her book Breaking Night. She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that e easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that “next to nothing could hold me down”. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.” Liz wants moviegoers to e away with the idea that changing your life is “as simple as making a decision”5In which order did the following things happen to Liz?aHer mother died of AIDS.bShe worked at a petrol station.cShe got admission into Harvard University.dThe movie about her life was put on.eShe had trouble finding a place to sleep.Ab,a,e,c,d Ba,b,c,e,dCe,d,b,a,c Db,e,a,d,c6The main idea of the passage is _.Ahow Liz managed to enter Harvard UniversityBwhat a hard time Liz had in her childhoodCwhy Liz loved her parents so muchDhow Liz struggled to change her life7What actually made her go towards her goal?AEnvy and encouragement. But some people get deep into debt. And critics say some banks have terms and charges that can make it harder for people to pay off that debt. In the United States, there are calls for stronger government supervision of the credit card industry. Credit cards have been heavily marketed through the mail and at stores. They offer economic power at a price. In 2004, Americans had about $800 billion in credit card debt. Now they owe about $968 billion. Critics say banks made it very easy to get credit cards. But that may be changing. The crisis in the housing and credit markets is beginning to affect the credit card industry. More payments are late. Charges for late payments are a growing source of profit for banks. But late payments can also signal bad debts. The central bank, the Federal Reserve, says two thirds of American banks have recently reported tighter lending requirements. Many people report having their credit limits reduced without warning. Some lawmakers are concerned that cardholders do not have enough protection from what critics say are abusive policies. These include actions like raising interest rates because of an unrelated event. Also, banks may raise the chances of a late payment by changing monthly payment dates for credit cards. According to a survey, 82% of Americans think credit cards provide a valuable service. But a majority, 58%, say they do not trust credit card panies. And three out of four think the government should regulate the industry more closely. Three out of four people feel there is always some condition that makes a card less appealing than the pany made it sound. And a little more than half say they have had a card that was not as good as they expected. But close to 80% say no one really reads the terms and conditions when they sign up for a credit card.9What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph probably mean?AWe can enjoy more convenience using credit cards.BCredit cards can improve your buying power.CWe can buy things at lower prices using credit cards.DCredit cards bring more card debt as well as convenience.10Which of the following can be a case of abusive policies?ABanks make credit cards look more attractive.BBanks ignore the danger of bad debts.CBanks raise interest rates with no good reason.DBanks put off monthly payment dates.11What can we know from the text?ABanks depend entirely on late payments to develop.BPeople should be more careful when applying for a credit card.CThe US government provides better protection for cardholders.DThe majority of Americans dont think much of credit cards.12What is the main idea of the last paragraph?ACredit cards are still very well received in America.BCredit cards dont live up to some peoples expectations.CMany people dont believe in credit card panies.DThe results of a survey about credit cards in America. D Science fiction writers create imaginary worlds. The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So its important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation. For example, if youre writing about human living on a planet with zero gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body. Then you have to figure out the exact rules of your imaginary worlds. And you have to follow them. If humans are able to breathe underwater in Chapter 1, your character cant drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. The issue here is maintaining your readers trust. That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you. If you start out with an ordinary detective novel and then throw in someone breathing underwater in the 6th chapter, you will pull the readers out of their imagination. The same thing happens if you change the rules halfway. Part of your preparation work for the novel is to map out its worlds in great detail. You should decide the following issues: the history of the world, the geography, what possibilities it offers, how everything works in this new reality, and how all of these factors affect the way your characters think, feel, and react to things. You dont have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have to let readers know enough to understand whats going on. This also allows you to work out logical problems and contradictions before you start writing. When you are writing, remember to make it feet real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what its like. Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like theyre actually there.13Whats the relationship between actual science and science fiction?AScience fiction promotes the development of actual science.BScience fiction often reflects the development of actual science.CActual science limits the imagination described in science fiction.DActual science provides basic principles for science fiction.14The second paragraph is mainly developed by _.Amaking parisons Bgiving examplesCfollowing the time order Danalyzing causes15The passage is mainly about _.Ahow to do scientific research Bhow to raise interest in scienceCwhat to expect from science fiction Dhow to write science fiction第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。New technology links the world as never before.
