But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in Englands rural Devonshire. It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon. The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgways school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older mans cold-water exploits(成就).Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.Journeys to the Pole arent the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. “John Ridgway was one of the few who didnt say, You are pletely crazy,” Saunders says.In xx, after being a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a closer encounter(遭遇) with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.Saunders has since bee the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and hes skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation. This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been pleted on skis.56. Brain-puter interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send mands to machines.Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a persons thoughts. In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right band. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.“our brain has billions of nerve ceils. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to municate with external world and also to control devices.”The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a puter. The puter interprets the signals and mands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the puter react to mands from the brain. Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the puter software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple mands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: munication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit frotn. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.66. BCI is a technology that can A. help to update puter systems B. control a persons thoughtsC. help the disabled to recover D. link the human brain with puters67. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?A. By controlling his muscles. B. By using his mind. C. By moving his hand. D. By talking to the machine.68. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?A. scalpcapputerwheelchairB. putercapscalpwheelchairC. scalpputercapwheelchairD. capputerscalpwheelchair69. The team will test with real patients to A. make profits from them B. make them live longerC. prove the technology useful to them D. learn about their physical condition70. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A. Switzerland, the BCI Research CenterB. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the DisabledC. New Findings About How the Human Brain WorksD. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain InjuriesDBatteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri (MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”,said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and puter engineering at MU. “The radioisotope(放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe. “People hear the word nuclear and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”His new idea is not only in the batterys size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwons battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the batterys power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.71. Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon?A. He is working on a nuclear energy source. B. He developed a chemical battery.C. He teaches chemistry at MU. D. He made a breakthrough in puter engineering.72. Jae Kwon gave examples in Paragraph 4_.A. to show chemical batteries are widely applied. B. to introduce various energy sources.C. to describe a nuclear-powered system. D. to indicate nuclear batteries can be safely used.73. Liquid semiconductor is used to _.A. get rid of the radioactive waste B. test the power of nuclear batteries.C. reduce the damage to lattice structure.D. decrease the size of nuclear batteries 74. According to Jae Kwon, his nuclear battery _.A. uses a solid semiconductor B. could be extremely thin C. will soon replace the present ones.D. has passed the fin
