The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler. Tyler was born infected with HIV: his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medications to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were hooked up to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing. Tyler wasnt willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tylers mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly spot him. This dreaded disease eventually wore down even the likes of a little dynamo like Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became apparent that he wasnt going to survive, Tylers mom talked to him about death. She forted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that she would be with him soon in heaven. A few days before his death, Tyler beckoned me over to his hospital bed and whispered, “I might die soon. Im not scared. When I die, please dress me in red. Mom promised shes ing to heaven, too. Ill be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me.”21. What is the BEST title for the article?A. How to deal with HIV B.A child and a mother B. C.Please dress me in red D.Never give up living23. Where can we read this article?A. An classical book B.A newspaper C.A book about HIV D.A book which offers touching storiesB Rats that eat high levels of a natural sugar known as fructose(果糖)seem to age faster than other rats-and the same could be true for people who eat too much sweet junk food, Israeli researchers said Monday Fructose, found naturally in honey and fruit, is used widely in foods ranging from soft drinks to yogurtBut while its sweet taste is popular, the sugar could cause wrinkles, the researchers saidDrMoshe Werman and Boaz Levi of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology fed large amounts of fructose to laboratory ratsWriting in the Journal of Nutrition, they said the fructose-fed rats showed changes in the collagen (胶原蛋白)of their skin and bonesCollagen basically holds the body togetherThe loss of collagen is what causes loose skin and deep wrinkles in older people, The process affected, Wermans team said, is known as cross-linking(交叉相连) Too much cross-linking makes the skin stiff, and these are the conditions that encourage wrinkled skin, Werman said in a statementHe said the same could be true of people, although this has not been shownAmericans are eating more and more processed foods such as baked goods, canned fruits, jams and dairy products that contain fructose, Werman saidOther studies have shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes(糖尿病) The rats Werman worked with were fed much more than the average adult person might eat in a day, which is standard in such experimentsThe rats were fed 12.5 grams of fructose per kg of weight every day for a year24In the experiments, if a rat was 025 kg, it may have been fed about grams of fructose every day for a yearA3 B4 C 5 D625Why do older people have deep wrinkles according to the passage?AThey dont drink enough water every day BThey dont take enough exercise every dayCCollagen in their body is lost, DTheir daily foods do not contain enough fructose26What can we learn from the passage?AThe fructose-fed rats only showed changes in the collagen of their skinBToo much cross-linking makes the skin softCThe amount of sugar the rats ate was larger than an ordinary adult might eat in a dayDIt hasnt been shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes27The best title for the passage should be “ ” ASugar-it could reduce collagen BCollagen-it could age youCCollagen-it could cause wrinkles DSugar-it could age youC Let us imagine howPride and Prejudice,Jane Austens most famous work, might be updated 200 years on. Austens popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Heres my own suggestion. . . It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism. My dear husband, said his hopeful wife one day, have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman? Her dull and indifferent (漠不关心的) husband replied that he had not. But it is, it is, she replied excitedly. Mr. Dull-Husband made no reply. Dont you want to know her plans? she cried with some impatience. Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head. . so Id better listen. Well, my dear, the rumor (传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me”. She will move in herself next month. What is her name? Bingley. Is she married or single? What a question! And none of your business. But her ing will be a fine thing for our five boys. How so? How can it possibly affect them? My dear love; those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going. Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place. Nonsense, my love, how little youve noticed the world has changed. Shes got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, Im told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call. Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job. Oh, thats not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think Ill go along all the same. And Mrs. Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed pany. It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs. Bennet would be one of very few women on the pany board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more female dimension and her lifespan (年限) among the citys business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, shed no doubt have enjoyed Davos(达沃斯经济论坛)and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.28.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Austen was born 200 years ago. B. Austen rewrote Pride and Prejudice.C. Austens success lies in her wisdom. D. Women with brains can also be as successful as men. B. Women have to pay a high price for success.C. A judgment must be made free from prejudice. D. Sex discrimination still exists nowadays.D When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like its the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is. Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves. And thats only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. Weve been scolded when we make mistakesat home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction. Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible. By trial and errortrying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakeswe have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly. Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.Think about how we learn: we dont just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You dont just read about painting, or writing, or puter programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing, then you make mistakes and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until youve pretty much learned how to do something. Thats how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something newbecause if you succeed at something, its probably something you already knew how to do. You havent really grown much from that successat most its the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if its a good journey. So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.32. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?A. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.B. Because its a natural part in our life.C. Because weve been taught so from a young age.D. Because mistakes have ruined many peoples careers.33. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?A. We should try to avoid making mistakes.B. We can learn from the passage that .A. most of us can really grow from successB. growing and improving are based on mistakesC. we learn to make mistakes by trial and errorD. we read about something and know how to do it right awayETHINK“ADDING VALUE”(and youll get more money) Most people either“like”their job,“love”their job or“hate”their jobEveryone wants to make more money regardless of how they feel about their jobThe secret to making more money is,focus on adding valueThink less of what you can have or acquire 36 You dont always have to do more though we always can do moreWhat you might consider is“doing different”Let me explain 1Do you choose to be happy at work? Its a choiceAnd you can do itIts a lot of“mind over matter”Mind whats important and the rest doesnt matter 37 When you choose to be happy, you will affect others in the workplace 2 38 Michaels definition of a“drag”is,a person who“drastically reduces all good”Of course, they have a bad attitudeIf youre this kind of person, you can changeStart being positiveStart by giving subtle and honest praise to co-workersJust start looking for authentic reasons to give others some praiseIt will set you apart from everyone elsePeople will recognize you as being more caring and more interested in themYour influence will skyrocket especially if youre in an environment where there is little praise and encouragement 3CHOOSE what you are going to thinkMost people have given in to CNN,ABC,NBC,“the way things are”,society, drama, negativity and the likeIts time to take back charge of your brainGet your focus directedLike Paul said in the bible,“Think on these thingsThings that are true, are of a good report, are honorable, are positive” 39 If you have nothing to read that is positive, send me your email address and Ill send you a free copy of myPowerful AttitudesebookRead a little every morningIt will positively and powerfully affect the rest of your day When you change yourself, you will add value in your workplaceLike the late great business philosopher,Jim Rohn said,“You can take out the garbage at McDonalds and earn minimum wageBut if you take out the garbage and whistle as you do it every day, youre likely to earn 50 cents more per hour”Add value to your workplace by controlling your own attitude 40 AStart your day by reading something positiveBThink more of what you can do,produce or createCJust be yourself and create a strong self imageDAre you a“drag”?EYour attitude and your happiness is importantFFall in love with itGYou will advance faster and in time, make a lot more money第三部分 完形填空(每题1.5分,共30分)The most important lesson I learned in high school had nothing to do with maths or American history.
