The law went into effect on January 1. California is not the first American state with such a law, but it has the largest number of illegal immigrants. More than a million people began to request licenses shortly after the new state law went into effect. Among them was Christian Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado entered the United States from El Salvador eight years ago without permission from the U.S. government. Some call such people illegal immigrants. Others call them undocumented immigrants. Mr. Alvarado thinks it so exciting, for he has been waiting for the license for a long time. But some are worried that their personal information will be used to find them and deport them. Armando Botello is a spokesman for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. He says people should not be afraid, for such information will not be shared. The new licenses are the same as licenses given to citizens except that they have the words Federal Limits Apply. That means the license cannot be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. Ana Garcia, working at the Central American Resource Center, says some illegal immigrants fear those words will be used to abuse them. Civil rights groups say the police and others will not. Dan Schnur, a political scientist at the University of Southern California, said that the main argument against the new law is that it rewards illegal behavior. But Professor Schnur argued that young, white Americans generally support immigration reform, including giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants Its simply because they grow up in a much more multicultural society than their parents or their grandparents did. Professor Schnur says he believes the changes in beliefs about illegal immigrants that have taken place in California will spread throughout the United States.21. Why did the new law make Mr. Alvarado excited?A. Because he can request a drivers license.B. Because he became a legal immigrant of California. C. Because he got his driving license as an illegal immigrant. D. Because a law went into effect for the new immigrants. 22. What is the difference of the new licenses pared to those given to citizens? A. The words “Federal Limits Apply” will abuse illegal immigrants B. They cant be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. C. They can be used to act against the police and other people. D. With the words Federal Limits Apply, immigrants can enjoy special rights. 23. Whats the publics attitude towards the new law released on January 1 in California? A. supportive B. negative C. neutral D. controversialWhen I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasnt very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldnt catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “Im not a fish!” I didnt know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish dont have any eyelids and the sun hurts their eyes. The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them. When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didnt pletely make sense. My dad never once said “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.24. Why was the author upset in the fishing trips when he was nine?A. He could not catch a fish.B. His father was not patient with him.C. His father didnt teach him fishing.D. He could not influence a fish as his father did.25. What did the authors father really mean?A. To read about fish.B. After entering the business world, the author found .A. it easy to think like a customerB. his fathers fishing advice inspiringC. his first bosss sales ideas reasonable D. it difficult to sell services to poor peopleCWe all know what a brain is. A doctor will tell you that the brain is the organ of the body in the head. It controls our bodys functions, movements, emotions and thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more.A brain can also simply be a smart person. If a person is called brainy, she is smart and intelligent. If a family has many children but one of them is super smart, you could say “Shes the brains in the family.” And if you are the brains behind something, you are responsible for developing or organizing it. For example, Bill Gates is the brains behind Microsoft.Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice. Word experts say the phrase “brain trust” became popular when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in 1932. Several professors gave him advice on social and political issues facing the U.S. These professors were called his “brain trust.”These ways we use the word “brain” all make sense. But other ways we use the word are not so easy to understand. For example, to understand the next brain expression, you first need to know the word “drain”. As a verb, to drain means to remove something by letting it flow away. So a brain drain may sound like a disease where the brain flows out the ears. But, brain drain is when a countrys most educated people leave their countries to live in another. The brains are, sort of, draining out of the country. However, if people are responsible for a great idea, you could say they brainstormed it. Here, brainstorm is not an act of weather. It is a process of thinking creatively about a plex topic. For example, business leaders may use brainstorming to create new products, and government leaders may brainstorm to solve problems. If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are nice and clean. To brainwash means to make someone accept new beliefs by using repeated pressure in a forceful or tricky way. Keep in mind that brainwash is never used in a positive way.28. Why did Roosevelt successfully win the election according to the passage?A. Because word experts were popular. B. Because he got his brain trust.C. Because he was smart at giving advice. D. Because he was the brains behind American.29. According to the text, if youre the CEO of Bai Du you can be called_ .A. the organ of the Bai Du B.the brain drain of Bai DuC.the brains behind the Bai Du D. Bai Dus brain trust30.
