Colleges want you to like them, even if they don t accept you. So the interview is not a test. Here are some tips for you.Control the conversation. The more the student can make the interview a conversation, not a question-answer session, the more success they are likely to have. 37Prepare, but don t recite your answers. You can prepare for some questions, including:“Tell us about yourself.” “What do you think has been your biggest achievement or contribution to your high school or your munity?” “Why do you want to attend our school?” 3839 Seems a little silly to even mention this, but students unknowingly put themselves out of the selection for reasons including: not turning off their cell phones, arriving late, dressing inappropriately, behaving rudely, making a bad first impression by slouching(无精打采) ,chewing gum, acting disinterested, and so on.Follow up. 40 Be sure to mention something discussed in the interview. If you are still interested in attending, show your enthusiasm in the note.A. Be respectful.B. Send a thank-you note to the interviewer.C. The best way to do that is to be honest and share your personality.D. Be interested.E. The first thing to do is to get rid of the image of the elderly, strange admissions person.F. After the interview, you may telephone the missions person.G. Think about these questions, practice responding, and get feedback from someone youtrust.Passage 2If youre looking for a challenging situation to practice your English, pick up the phone. Even if youre calling a business contact for a specific purpose, itd be rude to jump right into business. _17_2Getting to the pointThere always es the point where you want to move on from friendly chatting and get down to business. What should you do in this situation? _18_ However, if you are waiting to find out why someone called you, you can guide the conversation by saying “So what can I do for you?” 3Interrupting without offenceSometimes you may happen to be speaking with a very talkative person. _19_ Keep in mind when youd like to interrupt, and be sure to do it politely. For example, begin with “Id like to say something here”4Closing the callThis can be the trickiest part of the conversation! It may be the time to offer good wishes if its appropriate. _20_ Sometimes its easiest to just say you enjoyed speaking to the other person. Also remember cleverly saying the word well at the beginning of a sentence can indicate youre ready to end the conversation.AUse the phrase “Im just calling to.” to change to the topic at hand.BAdditionally, you may want to confirm any plans youve made.CYou should make a little small talk at the beginning.DYoud better greet him or her in a friendly way.ESo it may be difficult to get a word in.FPractice English through phone calls.GNever fear, though!Passage 3No matter what type of business you run, it has to deal with things that go wrong from your customers point of view. plaints can be a great source of information for organizations to make corrections as well as further improvements. _36_. And plastic never goes away. Plastic is not biodegradabledestroyed by bacteria or natural processes. Instead, it just breaks up into smaller pieces over time. The oceans contain a lot of chemicals and other pollutants. 18 That means harmful material may get into our food supply. 19 Human beings cause pollution and they can take steps to stop it. They can use fewer single use product containers and throw plastics away correctly. Plastic recycling programs also workswhere old bottles and other plastics are collected, broken down and used to make new products. We could reuse bottles in our households many times if we wish to, rather than end it after the first use. We could, when we get rid of that plastic, recycle it and reuse it, which replaces the need for raw materials. The report also calls on panies to improve methods for using plastics. 20 And it calls for information about the way plastic is thrown out or removed from use. Be on timeSomeone you are meeting for the first time is not interested in your “good excuse” for running late. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. 37 Arriving early is much better than arriving late, and is the first step in creating a great first impression. 38 If you are feeling unfortable and on edge, this can make the other person ill at ease and thats a sure way to create the wrong impression. If you are calm and confident, then the other person will feel more at ease. So have a firm foundation for making that first impression a good one.Present yourself appropriately 39 They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so the “picture” you first present says much about you to the person you are meeting. Is your appearance saying the right things to help create the right first impression? Appropriate dressing and grooming (仪表) help make a good first impression and also help you feel “the part”, and therefore feel more calm and confident. 40 A. Be open and confidentB. And their meaning is as easy to understand as “falling off a log.” One is, “easy as pie”. Nothing is easier than eating a piece of sweet, juicy pie. Unless it is a “piece of cake.Another expression is “as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.” It is hard to imagine why anyone would want to shoot fish in a barrel. But, clearly, fish in a barrel would be much easier to shoot than fish in a stream. 38 .Sometimes, things that e to us easily, also leave us just as easily. In fact, there is an expression “easy e, easy go” that recognizes this. 39 .Easy e, easy go.When life itself is easy, when you have no cares or problems, you are on “Easy Street.” Everyone wants to live on that imaginary street.40 . It means to treat a person kindly or gently, especially in a situation where you might be expected to be angry with him. Try to keep away from difficult situations. “Take it easy” until we meet again. A. If you ever tried to walk on a fallen tree log, you will understand what the expression means.B. If Im away from my puter, I usually write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the idea to the journal in my puter. It helps you review all the lessons youve learned. By reviewing your journal, you can quickly see the lessons youve learned and the ideas youve gotten. 38 You can use the ideas to propel (鞭策) yourself forward. 39 After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far youve gone. Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past might have been realized today. It helps you expand your ideas.
