We have learned a lot about the Earth Summit, and we have already known that the earth today is facing some pressing issues of development and the environment. Today lets listen to some speeches from the Voices of the Earth Summit to learn something more about these issues. So you should listen carefully and then plete the outlines on page 71.Task 1: Discussing. (group work, approx. 10 min)Now you are divided into groups and discuss the following questions, then make a speech.1. Do you agree with what they are saying? To think that there is nothing we can do is incorrect.What we do is important because it effects the environment.I suggest that we do something about these problems.I would advise people not to buy products that harm the environment.I remend that all of us should think about what we do and what we buy.A sample answer:I think that “sustainable development” is important for each nation in the world. It is dangerous if we fail to realize this point. The earth is in danger because it is out of order now. First, there are three serious problems, which, in other words, are called the “big three”, that is, contaminated drinking water, poor sanitation, and air pollution. To think that there is nothing we can do is incorrect, because more and more people, not only scientists, but also mon laborers, have been aware of these problems. What causes these problems? As the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day.” It is the same with the big three. In my opinion, the increasing population and the development of agriculture and industry, are the causes of the big three. In order to make the earth a sustainable planet and in order to survive, I suggest that we should do something about these problems. We must tell people, or rather, educate people that it is wrong to produce and to buy products that are harmful to the environment. Its time for us to take some action to protect the environment, or we would die out in the near future. On the other hand, I think that if everyone has realized how serious the problem is, and everyone is willing to make small changes, a big difference is sure to be made. Only in this way can sustainable development be possible from generation to generation. Conclusion: Man has only one earth, which is our home, so everyone should do something to save it. Saving the earth is saving man himself
