Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Pacific Ocean to the west., Canadas boundaries span (跨越) the widest portion (一部分) of the North America continent, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, from the United States along the 49th Parallel in the south to the North Pole, Arctic Ocean and Beaufort Sea in the north. The entire expanse of Canada covers 9,976,140 km (Land: 9,220,970 km and Water: 755,170 km) about 1.3 times the size of Australia and over 40 times the size of the United Kingdom. In winter, temperatures fall below freezing point throughout most of Canada, especially in Nunavut where it is extremely cold. But the south-western coast has a relatively mild climate. Along the Arctic Circle, mean temperatures are below freezing for seven months a year. During the summer months the southern provinces often experience high levels of humidity (潮湿) and temperatures that can surpass 30 degrees Celsius regularly. Western and south-eastern Canada experience high rainfall, but the Prairies (大草原) are dry with 250 mm to 500 mm of rain every year. Multi-national populationCanada has a widely spread population of 31,413,990 (July xx). Almost 35% of Canadians are of British descent, 20% French and Italian, Chinese, Ukrainian, Dutch, Greek, Polish and Scandinavian make up a large portion of the population. The aboriginal people who account for 470,000 Native Indians and 32,000 Inuit (the Eskimos of Canada) are much less than when the Europeans first inhabited Canada. There are also about 450,000 Metis, the name used to denote (指代) those of mixed aboriginal and European blood. All together this group of inhabitants accounts for around 4% of the population. Although Canada began as a Christian country and Christianity continues to dominate, its not easy to figure out how many spiritual beliefs that cover all corners of the country.CitiesThere are ten provinces in all and three territories in Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador are the furthest east and were the latest to join Canada; formerly they were a British colony. The Maritimes consist of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Quebec is the French speaking province and shares most of the heavy industry in Canada with Ontario. The Canadian capital is Ottawa, located on the Ontario-Quebec border. Westwards are the prairie provinces and then British Columbia on the Pacific coast. North of British Columbia is the Yukon Territory which extends north to the Arctic Ocean with the Northwest Territories. The newest territory is Nunavut which extends throughout the Eastern Arctic with Greenland its nearest neighbor to the east.
