Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship(艰苦n.) faced by the dispossessed(剥夺) and those of the outside of gloomy society. Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there as was the norm(规范,标准) at the time for pauper(穷光蛋)children, in particular by Bumble, a parish(教区) council official as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy(坏事) from the criminal gang(犯罪集团、帮派)of Fagin that includes the brutal(残酷的) thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful(隐秘的) Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore(妓女). Oliver is rescued(救) by the intervention(由于的介入)of a benefactor (恩人)- Mr. Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap(绑架) the boy again. Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously(恶毒地)by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming(兑换) qualities and has discovered Monk sinister(险恶) intention(意向). The story closes(结束) happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver parentage(父母子女关系) out of malice(恶意). Accusations(指控) were made that the book glamorised crime (like the equate Group of the period) but Dickens wisely disassociated(脱钩)himself from criminal romances.
