He didnt have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.Nicholas had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV.It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put.The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow.If he didnt, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.Using his skis,Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could.By that evening,Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldnt lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last,Nicholas did the only thing he couldhe huddled(蜷缩)in his cave and slept. The next day,Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldnt find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter,he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help.He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow,Nicholas was saved.Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls survival show Man vs. Wild.Thats where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode(一期节目)of Man vs. Wild,Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas amazing deeds,he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. 1What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?AHe got lost.BHe broke his skis.CHe hurt his eyes.DHe caught a cold. 根据第一段第四句,“Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone!” A。2How did Nicholas keep himself warm?AHe found a shelter.BHe lighted some branches.CHe kept on skiing.DHe built a snow cave. Using his skis.Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could. D。3On Tuesday,Nicholas_.Areturned to his shelter safelyBwas saved by a searcherCgot stuck in the snowDstayed where he was答案:B细节理解题。 He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. B。4Nicholas left Grylls a very deep impression because he_.Adid the right things in the dangerous situationBwatched Grylls TV program regularlyCcreated some tips for survivalDwas very hardworking答案:A推理判断题。根据最后一段.he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. 故选A。 DSeveral weeks ago, a mysterious Christmas card dropped through our mailbox. The envelope was addressed to a man named Raoul, who, I was relatively certain, did not live with us. The envelope wasnt sealed, so I opened it. The inside of the card was blank. Ed, my husband, explained that the card was both from and to the newspaper deliveryman. His name was apparently Raoul, and Raoul wanted a holiday tip. We were meant to put a check inside the card and then drop the envelope in the mail. When your services are finished at 4 a.m., you cant simply hang around, like a hotel bellboy expecting a tip. You have to be direct. So I wrote a nice holiday greeting to this man who, in my imagination, fires The New York Times from his bike aimed at our front door, causing more noise with mere newsprint than most people manage with sophisticated(复杂的) black market fireworks. With a start, I realized that perhaps the reason for the 4 a.m. wake-up noise was not ordinary rudeness but carefully executed spite(怨恨): I had not tipped Raoul in Christmas past. I honestly hadnt realized I was supposed to. This was the first time hed used the card tactic(策略). So I got out my checkbook. Somewhere along the line, holiday tipping went from an optional thank-you for a year of services to a Mafia-style protection racket (收保护费组织).Several days later, I was bringing our garbage bins back when I noticed an envelope taped to one of the lids. The outside of the envelope said MICKEY. It had to be another tip request, this time from our garbage collector. Unlike Raoul, Mickey hadnt enclosed his own Christmas card from me. In a way, I appreciated the directness. I know you dont care how merry my Christmas is, and thats fine, the gesture said. I want $30, or Ill forget to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day. I put a check in the envelope and taped it back to the bin. The next morning, Ed noticed that the envelope was gone, though the trash hadnt yet been picked up: Someone stole Mickeys tip! Ed was quite certain. He made me call the bank and cancel the check. But Ed had been wrong. Two weeks later, Mickey left a letter from the bank on our steps. The letter informed Mickey that the check, which he had tried to cash, had been cancelled. The following Tuesday morning, when Ed saw a truck outside, he ran out with his wallet. Are you Mickey? The man looked at him with scorn(轻蔑). Mickey is the garbageman. I am the recycling. Not only had Ed insulted(侮辱) this man by suggesting that he was a garbageman, but he had obviously neglected to tip him. Ed ran back inside for more funds. Then he noticed that the driver of the truck had been watching the whole incident. He peeled off another twenty and looked around, waving bills in the air. Anyone else? Had we consulted the website of the Emily Post Institute, this embarrassing break of etiquette (礼节) could have been avoided. Under trash/recycling collectors in the institutes Holiday Tipping Guidelines, it says: $10 to $30 each. You may or may not wish to know that your hairdresser, mailman and UPS guy all expect a holiday tip.55. The newspaper deliveryman put a blank card inside the envelope because_.A. he wanted the couple to pay for the newspaper B. he forgot to write a few words on itC. he used it to ask for a Christmas tip D. he was afraid of asking for a tip in person56. From the passage, we learn that the author_.A. didnt like Raouls way of delivering the paper B. didnt realize why Raoul delivered the paper that way beforeC. didnt know that Raoul delivered the paper for themD. didnt feel it necessary to meet Raoul when he came57. According to the passage, the author felt _ to give Raoul a holiday tip.A. excited B. happy C. embarrassed D. forced58. Which of the following is true about Mickey, the garbage collector?A. He wrote a letter to the couple afterwards.B. He failed to collect the money from the bank.C. He wanted the couple to send him a Christmas card.D. Ed was unwilling to tip the truck driver D. Ed no longer wanted to give them money60. From the passage we can infer that _. A. their garbage bin might not be emptied one day if the writer didnt give tips B. the writer could have avoided giving tips if they had consulted the website of the Emily Post Institute C. the writers husband didnt know Raoul at all D. the writers family was too poor to give the tips55. With a start, I realized that perhaps the reason for the 4 a.m. wake-up noise was not ordinary rudeness可知作者以前并不知道Raoul这样扔报纸和发出噪音的原因。57. I honestly hadnt realized I was supposed to可知作者是被迫付费的。58. The letter informed Mickey that the check, which he had tried to cash, had been cancelled. 60. A 根据Ill forget to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day. The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Denniss Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jacks dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name? ”“Are you sure you want to hear it? Its a scary story,” warned Jack.“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldnt have chosen this place!”“OK, but dont say I didnt warn you,” said Jack, and he began his tale.“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite differentit was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystalclear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.”“You are clearing too much land, warned one old man. The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it. Silly fool, said Dennis to himself. If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. Ill become wealthier. Hes just jealous!”“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”“What happened? ” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.“The land hit backjust as the old man warned, ” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”“What a stupid story, ” laughed Tom. “Plants cant” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted(晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy (常春藤) had covered Toms face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.56The underlined word “dare” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _A. courage B. assistance C. instruction D. challenge57. Why did Jack tell Tom and Martin the story?A. To frighten them.B. To satisfy their curiosity.C. To warn them of the danger of the place.D. To persuade them to camp in the swamp.58. Why did Dennis ignore the warning of the old man?A. The old man envied him. B. The old man was foolish.C. He was too busy to listen to others. D. He was greedy for more crops.59. Why did Tom scream and faint?A. He saw Denniss shadow. B. He was scared by a plant. C. His friends played a joke on him. D. The weather became extremely cold.60. What lesson can we learn from the story of Dennis?A. Grasp all, lose all. B. No sweat, no sweet.C. It is no use crying over spilt milk. D. He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.【要点综述】 本文主要讲述了三个人在沼泽地附近露营以及Denniss Swamp名字的由来。56. 由第八段“If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. Ill become wealthier. Hes just jealous!” 60.
