第十二天一、美文晨读My painful small decision“Soon, youre going to have to move out!” cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind, or at least known in my neighborhood. One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1.25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.Roses require a good deal of care, and if it werent for the pleasure they give, it wouldnt be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. Bushes must be pruned in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake.Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared under the thick leaves. Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold. First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June, but they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light. Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind, Ill think about that tomorrow.二、词汇训练1. Disabled visitors are welcome;there is good wheelchair_(通道)to most facilities.2. British physicist Stephen Hawking, possibly the worlds most famous scientist after Albert Einstein, gave lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing in August. An illness left him unable to move any part of his body except for three fingers. The main purpose of this greeting is to build up a good relationship between the people concerned, and each language usually has a number of set phrases which can be used for this purpose. Sometimes there are considerable differences in the type of phrases which can be used and cultural misunderstanding can easily result. The following is a true example.A young British woman went to Hong Kong to work, and at the time of her arrival she knew nothing about the Chinese culture or language. On her way to school one day she went to the bank to get some money. To her surprise, the bank clerk asked her if she had her lunch. She was extremely surprised at such a question because in the British culture it would be regarded as an indirect invitation to lunch. Between unmarried young people it can also indicate the young mans interest in dating the girl; so since this bank clerk was a complete stranger to the British girl, she was very much surprised and hastily commented that she had eaten already. After this she proceeded to school and was even more surprised when one of the teachers asked her the same question. By now, she realized that it could not be an invitation, but was puzzled as to why they asked it. In the following days, she was asked the same question again and again, and she spent hours trying to work out why so many people kept asking her this.Eventually she came to a conclusion: the people must be concerned about her health. She was somewhat underweight at the time and so she concluded they must be worried that she was not eating properly! Only much later did she discover that the question had no real significance at allit was merely a greeting.10. The main idea of the first paragraph is_. A. cultural differences can be the main reason for misunderstandings B. differences in greetings may lead to cultural misunderstandings C. different people should use different greetings in order to avoid misunderstandings D. greetings are a number of set phrases which can be used to build up a good relationship between the people concerned11. A. she bad already eaten her lunch at home B. she didnt want to have lunch with the bank clerk C. she regarded it as an indirect invitation to lunch D. she didnt know why the bank clerk was so warm-hearted12. The British woman misunderstood the question again by thinking that people were concerned about her health because_.
