(2016江苏高考C)El Nio,a Spanish term for “the Christ child,”was named by South American fishermen who noticed that the global weather pattern, which happens every two to seven years, reduced the amount of fishes caught around Christmas.El Nio sees warm water, collected over several years in the western Pacific, flow back eastwards when winds that normally blow westwards weaken,or sometimes the other way round. The weather effects, both good and bad,are felt in many places.Rich countries gain more from powerful Nios,on balance, than they lose.A study found that a strong Nio in 199798 helped Americas economy grow by $15 billion, partly because of better agricultural harvests:farmers in the Midwest gained from extra rain. The total rise in agricultural incomes in rich countries is greater than the fall in poor ones. But in Indonesia extremely dry forests are in flames.A multiyear drought(干旱) in southeast Brazil is becoming worse.Though heavy rains brought about By El Nio may relieve the drought in California, they are likely to cause surface flooding and other disasters. The most recent powerful Nio,in 199798,killed around 21,000 people and caused damage worth $36 billion around the globe. But such Nios come with months of warning, and so much is known about how they happen that governments can prepare.According to the Overseas Development Institute (ODI),however, just 12% of disasterrelief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards. This is despite evidence that a dollar spent on riskreduction saves at least two on reconstruction.Simple improvements to infrastructure(基础设施) can reduce the spread of disease.Better sewers(下水道) make it less likely that heavy rain is followed by an outbreak of the disease of bad stomach.Stronger bridges mean villages are less likely to be left without food and medicine after floods.According to a paper in 2011 by Mr Hsiang and coauthors, civil conflict is related to El Nios harmful effectsand the poorer the country, the stronger the link.Though the relationship may not be causal, helping divided communities to prepare for disasters would at least reduce the risk that those disasters are followed by killing and wounding people.Since the poorest are least likely to make up for their losses from disasters linked to El Nio,reducing their losses needs to be the priority.61What can we learn about El Nio in Paragraph 1?AIt is named after a South American fisherman.BIt takes place almost every year all over the world.CIt forces fishermen to stop catching fish around Christmas.DIt sees the changes of water flow direction in the ocean.62What may El Nios bring about to the countries affected?AAgricultural harvests in rich countries fall.BDroughts become more harmful than floods.CRich countries gains are greater than their losses.DPoor countries suffer less from droughts economically.63The data provided by ODI in Paragraph 4 suggest that _Amore investment should go to risk reductionBgovernments of poor countries need more aidCvictims of El Nio deserve more compensationDrecovery and reconstruction should come first64What is the authors purpose in writing the passage?ATo introduce El Nio and its origin.BTo explain the consequences of El Nio.CTo show ways of fighting against El Nio.DTo urge people to prepare for El Nio. El Nio,a Spanish term for “the Christ child,”was named by South American fishermen who noticed that the global weather pattern, which happens every two to seven years, reduced the amount of fishes caught around Christmas. El Nio.by South American fishermen是主句,其中a Spanish term for“the Christ child”是同位语;who引导限制性定语从句,其谓语动词noticed后面是that引导的宾语从句;该宾语从句的主语the global weather pattern与谓语动词reduced之间是which引导的非限制性定语从句。 根据首段第一句.a Spanish term for “the Christ child,”.South American fishermen who noticed that the global weather pattern, which happens every two to seven years. Rich countries gain more from powerful Nios,on balance, than they lose. A(2016南京、盐城一模)Scientists have known for decades that having measles(麻疹) suppresses kids immune systems for several weeks or months, leaving them illequipped to fight off pneumonia, bronchitis and other infections. Now a team of researchers has suggested that the measles virus may also leave a longerlasting sort of “immuneamnesia” that makes it harder for people to stave_off other illnesses for two years or more. That reemphasizes the importance of vaccination (疫苗),said biologist Michael Mina, lead author of a paper that was published in the journal Science.“There may be a longlasting impact that you cant undo if your child gets measles,” he said.“I hope this study can impress upon people the danger measles poses.”The researchers used what Mina called “an unconventional approach” to search for the longlasting immune system effects.Previous work in monkeys suggested that monkeys with the disease lost white blood cells their bodies had trained to fight off other illnesses, leaving them more likely to be infected. To test if a similar thing may occur in humans, the group mined historical data to find out the relationship between measles incidence(发病率) and deaths from other infectious diseases. They turned to data from England and Walesdeveloped nations where disease levels are generally low, allowing a lessconfused view of measles effects. Studying measles incidence and deaths from infectious disease both before and after the introduction of the measles vaccine in the UK.in the 1960s,Mina and the team saw a sort of shadow effect, where deaths from a variety of nonmeasles infectious diseases closely tracked measles incidence. The more measles in a population, the more deaths from other illnesses in the 28month period that followed.“Really it didnt matter what age group, what decade or what country,” said Mina.“They all showed consistent results .what were suggesting happens over the long term is that your immune system works fine, but it has forgotten what it previously learned.”Some researchers who were not involved in the work questioned whether the reductions in deaths as measles cases declined may have had more to do with improving nutrition and smaller family size than with prolonged immune suppression.Others thought the papers opinion of yearslong suppression was seemingly reasonable but said they could not comment on the mathematical models the group used.To know for certain what was behind the effect the group saw,Mina agreed, scientists would need to look at immune cells and observe their behavior. He said he would like to push the work in a more traditional direction: back into the laboratory. 1Why did Mina call their research method “an unconventional approach”?ATheir research was based on the historical data.BTheir research compared monkeys with humans.CThey only paid attention to developed nations.DThey discovered a sort of shadow effect.A推理判断题。 2According to Mina, what is the significance of their research?AThey warned people that measles can result in other infectious diseases.BThey carried out the research on measles in an unconventional approach.CThey showed how dangerous measles is and the importance of vaccination.DThey found out the disease levels are generally low in developed nations.C细节理解题。 3The underlined phrase “stave off” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _Akeep awayBsurvive fromCsearch forDturn downA词义猜测题。 stave off意为“暂时挡住;延缓,推迟;打退,击败”;keep away意为“使不接近,使远离,避开”;survive from意为“从中幸存”;search for意为“寻找,搜寻”;turn down意为“关小,调低;拒绝”。4Which of the following may be the best title of the passage?AMeasles has been the origin of other diseases and deathsBNew research conducted into measles has been widely questionedCStudy points to yearslong immune system misfortunes from measlesDDamage caused by measles to the immune system could last several weeksC主旨大意题。 B(2016福建省五校统一考试)More than nine out of ten young people expose themselves to the blue light from smartphones before bed, causing problems with sleep.A new survey also shows more than 28 million people in the UK regularly get no more than seven hours sleep a night.Prof Richard Wiseman, who commissioned the YouGov poll described the findings as “extremely worrying”Of the 2,149 adults questioned,78% said they used electronic devices before going to bed. This rose to 91% among the 18 to 24yearolds questioned in the survey.Getting less than seven hours sleep a night is below the recommended guidelines, and is associated with a range of problems, including an increased risk of weight gain, heart attacks, diabetes and cancer.“The blue light from these devices suppresses(压制) the production of the sleepinducing hormone melatonin,so its important to avoid them before bedtime,” said Prof Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire.Everyone needs different amounts of sleep, but adults are generally thought to require a minimum of seven to eight hours a night.Teenagers are recommended to get more, about nine hours. The proportion(比例)of people thought to be getting too little sleep had risen by a fifth since a “bedroom poll”conducted last year by the National Sleep Foundation.Last week revealed opticians were warning that the overuse of smartphones may be increasing peoples risk of eye damage.Optician Andy Hepworth said,“Blue violet light is potentially harmful to the back of your eyes.” So over a long period of time it can damage your eyes. When youre looking at a smartphone, the light peaking out of that is blue violet. The news came as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under25s check their smartphones 32 times a day. 5The purpose of the passage is to _Astress that people dont use smartphonesBremind people of enough sleepCask people not to sleep too muchDtell people not to use smartphones before bedD主旨大意题之写作意图题。根据第一段的第一句“More than nine out of ten young people expose themselves to the blue light from smartphones before bed, causing problems with sleep.” 6Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?AAccording to a new survey, more than 28 million people in the UK get more than seven hours sleep a night.BMore than 90% of young people expose themselves to the blue light from smartphones before bed.COf the 2,149 adults questioned,91% said they used electronic devices before going to bed.DThe news came as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under25s check their smartphones 30 times a day.B细节理解题。根据第一段的第一句“More than nine out of ten young people expose themselves to the blue light from smartphones before bed, causing problems with sleep.”可知,超过90%的年轻人会在睡前玩智能手机,故B项正确;根据第一段的第二句“A new survey also shows more than 28 million people in the UK regularly get no more than seven hours sleep a night.”可知,这些人每晚的睡眠时间不超过7个小时,故A项错误;根据第一段的倒数第二句“Of the 2,149 adults questioned,78% said they used electronic devices before going to bed.”可知,这些人中的78%说他们在睡前使用电子设备,故C项错误;根据文章的最后一句“The news came as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under25s check their smartphones 32 times a day”可知,这些人每天检查智能手机32次而不是30次,故D项错误。7According to what Andy Hepworth said, the overuse of smartphones may be increasing peoples risk of _Aweight gainBcancerCeye damageDheart attacksC细节理解题。根据最后一段的第一、二句“Last week revealed opticians were warning that the overuse of smartphones may be increasing peoples risk of eye damage.Optician Andy Hepworth said,Blue violet light is potentially harmful to the back of your eyes.” 8Teenagers are generally thought to get sleep of _ a night.Aabout 9 hoursB78 hoursCless than 7 hoursDmore than 10 hoursA细节理解题。根据第三段的第二句“Teenagers are recommended to get more, about nine hours.”
