Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco say sugary sodas may impact the health of these white blood cells to a degree that is comparable to smoking- people who drink soda on a regular basis put themselves at a higher risk of suffering from diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Researchers studied white blood cells in healthy adults, specifically looking at the ends of the study participants chromosomes (染色体), called telomeres(端粒). These telomeres are necessary to cell division and naturally get shorter with the passage of time. When a telomere gets too short, its cell dies. Thus, scientists believe longer telomeres mean youre healthier and younger, while shorter telomeres mean youre less healthy and aging faster. Researchers looked at data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey which included information on participants sugar-sweetened drink consumption, as well as diet soda and fruit juice consumption. To control obesity, they found that sugar-sweetened soda consumption was associated with shorter telomeres, but there was no link between telomere length and diet soda. Meanwhile, consumption of 100% fruit juice was associated with slightly longer telomeres. About one in five adults in the study admitted to drinking a 20-ounce regular soda each day. This daily consumption could equal 4.6 years of extra aging, according to the study. The American Heart Association says the best way to both maintain a healthy weight and to decrease the risk of heart disease is to limit added sugar to no more than 150 calories a day for men and 100 calories a day for women. One 12-ounce can of regular soda has 140 to 170 calories and about 40 grams of sugar.25. Why is smoking mentioned in the first paragraph ? A. To provide readers with some effects of smoking. B. To indicate that sugary sodas are more harmful than cigarettes. C. To help people understand the negative effect of sugary sodas on health. D. To warn people of the health risks of smoking along with other bad habits.26. Which can we learn about telomeres from the research? A. Its normal that they shrink as time goes by. B. They have nothing to do with cell division. C. They get short extremely fast in young people. D. Theyre in the middle of human chromosomes27. According to the passage, which of the following is the healthiest for a woman? A. 12 ounces of diet soda. B. 8 ounces of regular soda. C. 12 ounces of regular soda. D. 12 ounces of pure fruit juice.28. Which of the following is the best title for the report ? A. Regular Soda Consumption Kills Blood Cells B. Sugary Soda Makes You Age Faster C. Sweetened Beverages Lead to Obesity D. New Secret of Soda Is Discovered C In recent years, school curricula(课程) in the United States have changed heavily toward common main subjects of reading and math, but what about the arts? While some schools may regard it as a luxury, simple creative activities can be beneficial to child development. Learning to create and appreciate visual aesthetics(美学) may be more important than ever to the development of the next generation of children as they grow up. _:According to the National Institutes of Health, developmental milestones around age three should include drawing a circle and beginning to use safety scissors. Around age four, children may be able to draw a square and begin cutting straight lines with scissors. Many preschool programs emphasize the use of scissors because it develops the dexterity (灵巧) children will need for writing. Language development: For very young children, the arts can provide opportunities to practice their languages and vocabularies. When children are as young as one year old, parents can do simple activities such as crumpling up (压皱) paper and calling it a “ball”. By elementary school, students can use descriptive words to discuss their own creations or to talk about what feelings they have when they see different styles of artwork. Visual learning: Kids are taking in visual information even before they can read. This information consists of cues that we get from pictures or three-dimensional objects from digital media, books and television. Knowledge about the visual arts is especially important in helping kids become smart consumers in a world filled with marketing logos. Improved academic performance: Studies show that there is a connection between art and other achievements. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts ( three hours a day on three days each week through one full year ) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or a poem than children who do not participate.29. What might be the best subtitle for Paragraph 2 ? A. Thinking ability B. Drawing ability C. Writing skills D. Motor skills30. How does art promote language development ? A. By making art or talking about art. B. By crumpling up paper and calling it a “ball” C. By learning words for colors, shapes and actions. D. B. participating in art activities benefits childrens academic achievements C. problem-solving and critical- thinking skills rely on art education D. visual information is taken in after one can readD The opportunity cost of something is the cost of other things a person gives up in order to get something. To use a simple example, the opportunity cost of a person eating chicken for dinner might be his choice of having steak. The opportunity cost of college, for instance, consists of both monetary and time-related costs- the money the student could be making if he doesnt go to school, and the time the student could be investing in other pursuits (追求). In the US in 2010, the average cost of one years tuition and fees at a public four-year university was around $8,000, not including books or living expenses. This might be considered the “explicit cost” for a year of college. The opportunity cost of college, however, is this amount plus what the student could have been making at another job. The exact figure depends on what other job opportunities would actually be available to the person. If the potential student is an experienced electrician making $50,000 a year, the opportunity cost of college upon leaving this job would be $50,000 a year plus the explicit cost. On the other hand, this person might be a recent high school graduate with little or no job experience or practical skills, who would likely be making $15,000 a year in an unskilled position if not attending college, in which case the opportunity cost would be comparatively low. Interestingly, the opportunity cost of college is significantly lower in times of economic recession (衰退), when a person is less likely to find a well- paying job. Of course, money is not the only factor in a potential students decision. College course can be highly demanding in terms of time and energy as well. The time invested in attending classes, reading, studying, working on projects, etc., also has an opportunity cost in terms of what other activities the person might be doing. These activities might include gaining work experience, spending time with family, or even sleeping. This is especially true for nontraditional students- generally those who do not go to college, as they are more likely to have a family, children or an existing job.32. According to Paragraph 1, the opportunity cost of college refers to _. A. the opportunities students have in college B. the money and time students have to spend C. the choices students make to find opportunities D. the opportunities students miss by attending college33. Whether the opportunity cost of college is high or low depends on _. A. which college students can attend B. why students want to go to college C. how much students can actually earn D. what students have learned in college34. The higher the opportunity cost, _. A. the more free time people have B. the more habits people may have C. the more money people have gotten D. the more things people have to give up35. What is the purpose of the passage ? A. To introduce the cost of going to college B. To explain the opportunity cost of college C. To stress the importance of job opportunities D.
