Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible(负责任) for social progress. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth depended on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs(事件). The development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire(渴望)to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the common players, they are strongly against competition. Most of them are young people who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these youngsters, I often observe(观察) in them a desire to fail. They seem to find failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: I may have lost, but it doesnt matter because I really didnt try. What is not usually accepted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure(估量) of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that ones self-worth depends on how well one performs in the competition. Both are afraid of not being valued. We can discover a new meaning in competition only as this kind of fear begins to disappear.26 . What does this passage mainly talk about?ACompetition helps to set up self-respect.BOpinions about competition are different among people.CCompetition is harmful to personal quality development.DFailures are necessary experience in competition.27 . Why do some people favor(赞同) competition according to the passage?AIt pushes society forward.BIt builds up a sense of duty.CIt improves personal abilities.DIt encourages efforts.28 . What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail?AOnes worth lies in his performance in the competition.BOnes success in competition needs great efforts.COnes achievement is decided by his special skills.DOnes success is based on how hard he has tried.29 . Which point of view may the author agree to?AEvery effort should be paid back.BCompetition should be encouraged.CWinning should be a life-and-death matter.DFear of failure should be removed in competition.A new research has discovered that meditation(冥想)and oxygen sport together reduce depression(抑郁). The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination, done twice a week for only two months, reduced the symptoms of a group of students by 40 percent.“We are excited by the findings because we saw such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and non-depressed students, ”said lead author Dr. Brandon Alderman.“It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.”Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive(交互的)effect in combating depression. Alderman and Dr. Tracey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training( MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing, which enabled those with depression to accept moment-to-moment changes in attention.Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus-part of the brain involved in memory and learning-says scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive. The idea for the human intervention(干预)came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover from stressful life events.By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past, Shors says.“We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be affective in improving mental health, ”said Alderman.“The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone at any time and at no cost.”30 . What made the research so different?AAdopting a way of meaningful talk.BTreating depression with special medicine.CCombining the two ways to reduce depression.DComparing the depressed with the non-depressed.31 . The underlined word combasting in Paragraph 3 probably means _.AfightingBdevelopingCimprovingDexamining32 . What can we know about what the participants did in the research?AThey did oxygen sport half an hour before thinking.BThey thought quietly and then took exercise.CThey took exercise longer than they thought.DThey took exercise while thinking quietly.33 . What is Shors main purpose of her studies?ATo find out certain brain cells of humans.BTo study the production of new brain cells.CTo offer people a new method to reduce stress.DTo decide the links between stress and exercise. Many people say dolphins are intelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand and learn things quickly. But are they as smart as humans, or are they more like cats and dogs? Dolphins use their brains quite differently from the way humans do. But scientists say dolphins and humans are very similar in some ways. How?Like humans, every dolphin has its own name. The name is a special whistle (哨声). Each dolphin chooses a specific (特有的) whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They talk to each other about a lot of things-such as their age, their feelings, and finding food. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. Understanding dolphin conversation is not easy for humans. No one speaks dolphin yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups called pods, and they often join others from different pods to play games and have fun-just like people. Scientists believe playing together is something only intelligent animals do.Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both species make plans for getting things they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an intelligent plan to get food. When there are fish near a boat, dolphins signal (发信号) to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. Why do dolphins help the men? There is an advantage for them they get to eat some of the fish that escape (逃脱) from the net.34 . What is a dolphins “name”?AIt is a kind of game.BIt is a body sign.CIt is a dolphins age.DIt is a specific sound.35 . What does the underlined word others refer to?AOther fishes.BOther peopleCOther dolphinsDOther games36 . What can we infer from the passage?ASome scientists can understand dolphins system of sounds.BDolphins probably help fishermen by using their body language.CHumans join dolphins groups to get things we want. DDolphins can talk to humans about their age and their feelings.37 . Whats the main idea of the passage?ADolphins can communicate with each other at birth.BDolphins are social animals because they play together.CDolphins are smart and are like humans in some ways.DDolphins help humans do many things like catching fish.三、单词填空Can plants eat people?
