Help students to understand the uses of the relative pronouns, and then learn to analyse the structure of the Attributive Clause.2. Enable students to improve their ability of reading & writing through different types of practice.Emotional goals:1. Encourage students to be an active learner in discovering useful structures.2. Guide students learning through discovering, thinking, understanding and using in order to help them have a good understanding of the Attributive Clause.3. Enable students to realize the importance of some useful structures and arouse their love of the English language & culture.II. Important Points:1. The definition and the structure of the Attributive Clause.2. The usage of the relative pronouns.III. Difficult Points: 1. How to get students involved in the practice of discovering useful structures?2. What should we do to teach grammar structure effectively?IV. Teaching Methods:Pre-learning; Self-learning (Discovering, Thinking, Understanding); Co-operation (Using ).V. Teaching Procedures:Step 1 Lead-in 1. What makes a good learner?Instructions: working hard, listen to the teacher carefully, learn from each other, to be an active reader, good strategies of learning, effective way of leaning,. A good learner should pay much attention to learning strategies, for example, he / she must have a good ability of discovering and using some useful structures.2. What is an attributive clause?An attributive clause gives more information about someone or something referred to in the main clause. Look at the example below:She is the girl who can speak English very well.Step 2 DiscoveringAn attributive clause may begin with a relative pronoun such as that, which, who, whom or whose. Find the sentences with the attributive clauses from the reading passage:1. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than two huandred kilometres away.2. A huge crack that was eight kilometres long and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals.3. The number of people who were killed or injured reached more than 400,000.4. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake which was almost as strong as the first one shook Tangshan.5. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead.6. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed.Instructions: Some attributive clauses are used to specify which person or thing we mean, or which type of person or thing we mean.Step 3 Thinking 1. When should we use the attributive clauses?Instructions: When we want to specify which person or thing we mean, or when we want to add some detailed information to someone or something that we are describing, we can use a complex sentence which contains one or more attributive clauses.Look at the examples below:(1)Which baby is Jack?The baby whose trousers are red is Jack.The baby who is wearing red trousers is Jack.(2)Which house is mine?The house whose roof is brown is mine.The house the roof of which is brown is mine.2. How can we make up sentences with the attributive clauses?Learn to join the following two sentences together:(1) Do you know the man? He often attends our class. Do you know the man who often attends our class?(2) The man has made a new discovery recently. You introduced the man to me years ago.The man whom / that you introduced to me years ago has made a new discovery recently.(3) The man is a worker. His works are widely read.The man whose works are widely read is a worker.Instructions: Notice that we dont put a comma between the noun and a defining relative clause, and an attributive clause begins with a relative pronoun.Step 4 Understanding 1. How can we decide a proper relative pronoun?Relative PronounThings or PeopleFunctionthatthings / peoplesubject / objectwhichthingssubject / objectwhopeoplesubject / objectwhompeopleobjectwhose = of which / whomthings / peopleattributeInstructions: When we use a defining attributive clause, the relative pronoun can be the subject or the object of the clause:* When the relative pronoun is the subject, the verb of the clause follows the relative pronoun, e.g.I have a friend who / that palys the piano.* When the relative pronoun is the object, there is a noun or pronoun between the relative pronoun and the verb in the relative clause. In this case, we can use a zero relative pronoun, e.g.Thats the man (who / that) I met at Allisons party.2. Complete the following sentences using that, which, who or whose.(1) Here are my neighbours whose home was destroyed by the earthquake.(2) The terrible shaking of the building woke up all the people who were asleep.(3) The next day people put up shelters in the open air made with anything (that) they could find. (4) Several days later most of the buildings which / that had been damaged were repaired.(5) This frightened boy whose mother was lost in the disaster is looking for her now.(6) We went to see our teacher whose husband lost his life in the earthquake.(7) “Is this the young man who saved several people trapped under buildings?” she asked.(8) A number of children whose parents had died in the quake were sent to live with families in other cities.Step 5 Using 1. Rewrite the following passage, using the attributive clauses:This is our school.We study there. Our class is a big family. It consists of 25 girls and 20 boys. Most of them are mainly from the countryside. Zhao Qiang is a kind-hearted boy. He is always ready to help others. He is such a good boy that we all like him.2.
