Braincomputer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a persons thoughts. In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices”The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.Prof.Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.【语篇解读】 本文主要介绍了Jose Millan和Michele Tavella利用Braincomputer interface(BCI) technology制作的由人的意念控制的轮椅以及其工作原理等。1BCI is a technology that can_.Ahelp to update computer systemsBlink the human brain with computersChelp the disabled to recoverDcontrol a persons thoughts解析细节理解题。由第一段中的.scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. His invention was Bakelite,an inexpensive, widely used plastic.Leo was born in Belgium into a lower, middleclass family. He studied at the University of Ghent in 1882 and eventually graduated with a doctorate in natural science at the age of 21. He taught there for several years before he traveled on a scholarship to the United States. Once in New York, Leo met Richard Anthony. Anthony saw potential in young Leo and offered him a job of working in America as a chemist for his company. Leo worked for Anthony for the next two years before unsuccessfully attempting to start his own consulting business. After failing to see success in his own business operations, Leo decided to return to what he knew and he started producing a kind of photographic paper that would allow good pictures to be taken in artificial light. He did so well in the beginning that he started a company called Nepera Chemical Company while creating a special kind of paper called Velox. Within two years, Kodak Company bought the right to Leos discovery for $ 1,000,000. Leo accepted and used the money to set up his own laboratory in his backyard in New York and lived a comfortable life.Leos next project was to come up with a hard yet moldable(可模压的)plastic. After much experimentation, Leo finally came up with a plastic and called it Bakelite. Its special feature was that at a high temperature and pressure, Bakelite can hold its form, even under great heat. Leo made his achievement public in February, 1909. The invention of Bakelite, marked the beginning of the Age of Plastics.Whether we are listening to the radio, driving down the road, or drinking from our plastic bottles,we can thank a man who had the foresight and courage to pursue what he thought was possible.【语篇解读】 本文主要讲述了Leo Baekeland在生意失败之后,利用Kodak Company所给的钱做资金,从而发明了plastic的事情。5What is the passage mainly about?AThe life of Leo Baekeland.BThe coming of the Age of Plastics.CThe inventions of Leo Baekeland.DThe process of inventing Bakelite.解析 主旨大意题。由文章第一段可知。答案A6Why did Leo Baekeland decide to produce a kind of photographic paper?ABecause he wanted to become an employee of the Kodak Company.BBecause he became aware that his own business wouldnt be successful.CBecause he didn t like working as a chemist.DBecause he had a great interest in taking photos.解析细节理解题。由第三段第一句可知。答案B7Whats the right time order of the following events?aLeo invented Bakelite.bLeo went to the United States.cLeo invented the paper Velox.dLeo studied at the University of Ghent.eset up his own laboratory in New York.Ad,b,c,e,a Ba,c,d,b,eCd,b,c,a,e Db,a,e,c,d解析细节理解题。Leo先在the University of Ghent求学,然后去了美国,生意失败之后,他发明了the paper Velox,用所得的钱在纽约建立了自己的实验室,最后发明了Bakelite。故选A。答案A8We can learn from the passage that Bakelite is a plastic that_.Ahas been widely used since the early 19th centuryBis too expensive for most people to buyCkeeps its shape under high heatDhas a longer life than other kinds of plastic解析推理判断题。由第四段第三句可知。答案C
