In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier than their gasolinepowered cousins. People in California love to talk about “zeroemissions (零排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to be_clueless_about where electricity comes from. Power plants most all use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those “zeroemissions” cars are likely coalburning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes “If I can't see it, it's not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc. A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far, so electric cars burn more fuel than gasolinepowered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal, or solar, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don't use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.1What's the main idea of the passage?AElectric cars aren't actually clean.BElectric cars are zeroemissions vehicles.CZeroemissions vehicles are popular.DGasolinepowered cars are more efficient.2Which of the following words can replace “be clueless about” in Paragraph 2?Abe familiar with Bbe curious aboutCfail to understand Dshow their interest in3The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run _.Aat least 25 miles Bmore than 25 milesCas far as 25 miles Dless than 25 miles4In the author's opinion, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more _.Aenvironmentally friendly BexpensiveCefficient Dharmful5It can be inferred from the passage that _.Aelectric cars' batteries are poisonous for a long timeBnow electric cars are used more than their gasolinepowered cousinsCzeroemissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environmentDelectric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning somethingB(2013·江西六校联考)People born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning (断奶) in either “summer” light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or “winter” cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day. Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group. After 28 days, it turns out the summerborn mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winterborn mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks. The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder.“We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans,”said study researcher McMahon. “If the mechanism (机制) similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality.”6How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?AFour. BFive.CSix. DSeven.7What's the main idea of the text?AThe biological clock regulates mood in humans.BPeople born in winter are at higher risk for physical health disorders.CBeing born in winter has a negative effect on people's mental health.DThe length of light will influence the behavior of the mice.8The underlined word “split”(Paragraph 3) can be replaced by _.Aended BtornChit Ddivided9Which group of mice has changed their behavior after the experiment?AThe group born in winter and staying in winter.BThe group born in winter and switching to summer.CThe group born in summer and staying in summer.DThe group born in summer and switching to winter.10Who is the appropriate reader of the passage?AA jobhunter.BA student in the university.CA newlymarried couple.DAn experienced dentist. This is the first time that . 4选D此题考查强调句型It is .that .。本句中强调了状语only when you nearly lose someone。 appear“出现”;suit“适合”;fit“合适”;appeal“吸引”。 be about to do .when . bring up“抚养”;take up“从事”;break up“打碎;分裂;解体”。 A项应说成a variety of; B项意为“准确的;精确的”; C项意为“原始的”; D项意为“不同的;多种多样的”。 根据the old man 与wait之间的关系,应该选择v.ing形式,再根据句意得知他是先“wait”后才“realize”。 根据第四段中的“A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far”可知答案为D项。 根据第三段的第一句及画线词后面的“were split into three groups”可推知,“split”与“divided”同义,意为“被分开”。
