Frost,简介,Mending Wall,is a,metaphorical(,隐喻的,),poem written in,blank verse, published in 1914.,This poem is set in the countryside and is about, one man questioning why he and his neighbor must rebuild the stone wall dividing their farms each spring.,The stone wall at Frosts farm in Derry, which he described in,Mending wall,.,While living in England with his family,Frost was exceptionally homesick for the farm in New Hampshire where he had lived with his wife from 1900 to 1909.,Despite the eventual failure of the farm,Frost associated his time in New Hampshire with a peaceful, rural sensibility that he instilled in the majority of his subsequent poems.“Mending Wall”is autobiographical on an even more specific level:a French-Canadian named Napoleon Guay had been Frosts neighbor in New Hampshire, and the two had often walked along their property line and repaired the wall that separated their land.,Summary,Every year, two neighbors meet to repair the stone wall that divides their property. The narrator is skeptical of this tradition, unable to understand the need for a wall when there is no livestock to be contained on the property, only apples and pine trees. He does not believe that a wall should exist simply for the sake of existing. Moreover,he cannot help but notice that the natural world seems to dislike the wall as much as he does:mysterious gaps appear, boulders fall for no reason.,The neighbor,on the other hand, asserts that the wall is crucial to maintaining their relationship, asserting,“Good fences make good neighbors.”Over the course of the mending, the narrator attempts to convince his neighbor otherwise and accuses him of being old-fashioned for maintaining the tradition so strictly. No matter what the narrator says, though, the neighbor stands his ground, repeating only:“Good fences make good neighbors.”,.,Something there is that doesnt love a wall,That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,And spills the upper boulders in the sun;,And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.,有一样,东西,它大概是不喜欢墙,,它使得墙脚下的冻地涨得隆起,,大白天的把墙头石块弄得纷纷落:,使得墙裂了缝,二人并肩都走得过。,Frost,The work of hunters is another thing:,I have come after them and made repair,Where they have left not one stone on a stone,But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,To please the yelping dogs.,士绅们行猎时又是另一番糟蹋:,他们要掀开每块石头上的石头,,我总是跟在他们后面去修补,,但是他们要把兔子从隐处赶出来,,讨好那群汪汪叫的狗。,The speaker and readers,The gaps I mean,No one has seen them made or heard them made,But at spring mending-time we find them there.,I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;,我说的墙缝,是怎么生的,谁也没看见,谁也没听见,但是到了春季补墙时,就看见在那里。 And on a day we meet to walk the line,And set the wall between us once again.,We keep the wall between us as we go.,有一天我们约会好,巡视地界一番,,在我们两家之间再把墙重新砌起。 ,To each the boulders that have fallen to each.,And some are loaves and some so nearly balls,We have to use a spell to make them balance:,Stay where you are until our backs are turned!,落在各边的石头,由各自去料理。,有些是长块的,有些几乎圆得像球,需要一点魔术才能把它们放稳当:,“老实呆在那里,等我们转过身再落下!”,We wear our fingers rough with handling them.,Oh,just another kind of out-door game,One on a side.It comes to little more:,我们搬弄石头把手指都磨粗了。 Metaphor:wall-mending process,There where it is we do not need the wall:,He is all pine and I am apple orchard.,My apple trees will never get across,And eat the cones under his pines,I tell him.He only says,Good fences make good neighbors.,在墙那地方,我们根本不需要墙:,他那边全是松树,我这边是苹果园。 ,Personification:refer to the speaker himself,Spring is the mischief in me,and I wonder If I could put a notion in his head:,Why do they make good neighbors? Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.,Before I built a wall Id ask to know,What I was walling in or walling out,And to whom I was like to give offence.,有牛的人家?可是我们此地又没有牛。,我在造墙之前先要弄个清楚,,圈进来的是什么,圈出去的是什么,,并且我可能开罪的是些什么人家,,Speakers meditation on wall,Protect dignity and property, hinder the communication,Something there is that doesnt love a wall,That wants it down.“,I could say Elves to him,But its not elves exactly, and Id rather,He said it for himself.,有一点什么,它不喜欢墙,,它要推倒它。,”我可以对他说这是“鬼”。,但严格说也不是鬼我想这事还是,由他自己决定吧。,I see, him, there,Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top,In each hand, like,an old-stone savage armed,.,He moves in darkness as it seems to me,Not of woods only and the shade of trees.,我看见他在那里,搬一块石头,两手紧抓着石头的上端,,像一个旧石器时代的武装的野蛮人。,我觉得他是在黑暗中摸索,,这黑暗不仅是来自深林与树荫。,simile,Backward, uncivilized, convention,He will not go behind his fathers saying,And he likes having thought of it so well,H
