(p90-91): Discuss the statements in groups and share your ideas in class.,Pronunciation Questionnaire,There have been two different views on teaching pronunciation in China. Which do you agree more?,1. Pronunciation is of great importance. If a child cannot learn correct pronunciation at the beginning, he/she will not learn correct English well.,2. We learn English for communication. So correct pronunciation is not very important if others can understand your words,There have been two different,Some ideas about the role of pronunciation:,1. pronunciation is an essential part of the English language,2. Chinese students need a certain degree of focus on pronunciation.,3. Dont teach pronunciation as phonetics.,4. Phonetic rules are helpful but not suitable for beginners.,5. Stress and intonation are as important as the sounds themselves.,More ideas:,1. pronunciation is extremely important to Chinese students because it is regarded as the face for an English speaker. Good pronunciation provides one with confidence, strength and motivation to use English in front of others.,2. pronunciation learning should be combined with vocabulary, so learning to read and write phonetic transcripts of words and understanding phonetic rules are both very useful.,Some ideas about the role of p,Some ideas about the goal of teaching pronunciation:,1. our goal is not to require Ss to have a native-like pronunciation due to 3 reasons:,A. critical period (Benneberg 1967),B. the amount of exposure to English,C. the physiological differences,Can you think of some more reasons?,the variety of world Englishes, the communication purpose,Some ideas about the goal of t,The Critical Period Hypothesis: if human dont learn a foreign language before a certain age, then due to changes such as maturation of the brain, it becomes impossible to learn the foreign language like a native speaker. This is true for acquiring native-like pronunciation, but there is less evidence that it is true for acquiring the grammar or the vocabulary of a foreign language. Everyone agrees that all people who learn a foreign language after puberty (12-13) will always have an accent. It will be easy for the native-speaker to identify that the person is not a native-speaker of that language.,The Critical Period Hypothe,The teaching of pronunciation should focus on the students ability to identify and produce English sounds themselves.,Therefore, our realistic goal is to equally improve :,A. consistency,: smooth and natural.,B. intelligibility,: understandable to listeners.,C. communicative efficiency,: help convey the meaning that is intended by the speaker.,The teaching of pronunciation,6.3 Aspects of pronunciation,Sounds,(48 phonemes: vowels, consonants),Phonetic symbols,Phonetic rules,( eg. vowel alphabet, cluster of letters),Stress,(word-stress, phrase-stress, sentence-stress),Intonation,(falling, rising),Rhythm,6.3 Aspects of pronunciationSo,Task 3,common problems,: difficulty, reasons,: differences, lack of practice, not know how, sounds not found in Chinese, solutions,: explain how, contrast and analysis, show examples, two kinds of practice,(mechanical practice & meaningful practice),6.4 techniques in teaching sounds,Task 3 6.4 techniques in teac,Mechanical practice meaningful practice,Presenting & practicing,Listen & repeat,Listen & read aloud,Read aloud & error correction,Detective listening,Use pictures of the mouth, mouth movement or mirror,Comparison of similar sounds or C/E,Use words,Tongue twisters,Production practice p97,Fill in the blanks,Make up sentences,Use meaningful context,Pictures,Tongue twisters,Tongue twisters:,Songs,Games,Perception practice p96,minimal pairs, which order?,same or different?,odd one out, completion,Small tip: use variation in practicing sound,:,Different speed,Different tones,Repeat 3 times,Mechanical practice meaningf,A minimal pair,/t/ /d/,1. tip dip,2. tan dan,3. toe doe,4. hit hid,5. cot cod,6. bet bed,A minimal pair /t/ /d/,Tongue twisters:,She sells seashells on the seashore.,Five wives drank five bottles of fine wine.,Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
