On Christmas Eve, seventy-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread, 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier desk, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.Time: On Christmas Eve-coldCharacter: seventy-year-old GeorgePersonality: poor, thrift At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. “Where are they?” Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of his coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store. He found the gloves had been lost.Where are they? Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable(耐用的). He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession(拥有物) was almost like losing a child to him.He cherished the gloves very much. George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain (徒劳). He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier. He tried very hard to find the gloves but failed. “Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.” Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he sae did wear gloves but one was womens and the other not black. There is still good action in todays world. Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer. During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. 没有找到,因为第二段中写到he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair.2 )第一段应该写什么? Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer. He was wearing a pair of black leather gloves! He was wild with joy! A wild gaiety took hold of him. His eyes were sparkling like diamonds. His heart beat wildly. His heart beat so fast that he could hardly breathe. His face brightened up with joy / pleasure. His face lit up with excitement 他毫不犹豫地冲上前去,抓住那人的手,指着手套问:“先生,你这手套是不是刚刚捡到的?”Without any hesitation he rushed up to the man , caught hold of his arm, pointing at the gloves and asked, “ Sir, are the gloves the ones you have just picked up?” To his great disappointment, the man looking like a lawyer denied it, appearing rather annoyed / upset. The old man apologized and left reluctantly. He sat on a bench for a long time with glum looks on his face, sighing. Then he made a decision. He walked up to the cashier and asked her to keep them in case the lost gloves were found. Finally he dragged his heavy legs towards the exit. During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer. During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. (abrupt:adj唐突的) Abrupt as it might seem, George came up without hesitation and asked if they were his, but there came a disappointing answer. as引导让步状语从句,作“虽然,尽管”解。 eg: Strange as it may seem,it is true尽管这事看上去很奇怪,但却是真的。 Try as he might,Tom could not get out of the difficulties不管怎样努力,汤姆还是摆脱不了困境。 2 . (so.as to太.以至于) On second thought, he realized nobody would be so foolish as to wear them right inside the store. 3 . (alternative:n. 选择,in case:万一) He had no other alternative but to ask the cashier to keep them in case the lost gloves were found. 4 . (drag:v拖拽) Then he dragged his legs towards the exit. 5 . After all, in deep winter, he could not do without gloves. 6 . Finally poor George decided to buy another pair of leather gloves. 7 . With the last ray of hope, he stepped into the store again. 8 . (no sooner.than: 一. No sooner had he opened the door than the cashier told him there was indeed one such pair as he lost. no sooner. than.倒装hardly. when.倒装eg: Hardly had we set off when it began to rain.on doing./the moment./as soon as/once 9 . After examining them carefully, he was wild with joy, expressing sincere gratitude and saying to himself that a good action was never lost. Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves.
