She was carrying 1316 passengers and a crew of 89l. Even by modern standards, the 46,000 ton Titanic was a colossal ship. At that time, however, she was not only the largest ship that had ever been built, but was regarded as unsinkable, for she had sixteen watertight compartments. Even if two of these were flooded, she would still be able to float. The tragic sinking of this great liner will always be remembered, for she went down on her first voyage with heavy loss of life.Four days after setting out, while the Titanic was sailing across the icy waters of the North Atlantic, a huge iceberg was suddenly spotted by a look-out. After the alarm had been given, the great ship turned sharply to avoid a direct collision. The Titanic turned just in time, narrowly missing the immense wall of ice which rose over 100 feet out of the water beside her. Suddenly, there was a slight trembling sound from below, and the captain went down to see what had happened. The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged. Below, the captain realized to his horror that the Titanic was sinking rapidly, for five of her sixteen watertight compartments had already been flooded! The order to abandon ship was given and hundreds of people plunged into the icy water. As there were not enough life-boats for everybody, 1500 lives were lost.【课文讲解】The loss of the TitanicThe great ship, Titanic, sailed for 背景介绍sail for 航海去往某处set out (off) for 出发去往某处leave for, head for, make forEg: He will set out for the Atlantic. The plane is making for the airport. We are heading for Canada. She eas carryingcarry 表示载有; a crew of 一组人员Even by by : according to 表示依据modern standards 现代的标准by regulation 依据规则 ; by ruies 依据条例by our estimate 根据我们的估计by ones looks / by ones appearance 根据某人的长相according to 依据 (事实、课文等客观存在的现实)according to the fact 依据事实according to the text 依据这篇课文在我看来: in my opinionaccording to / in accordance within accordance with 更加正式in accordance with law 依据法律in accordance with rulesat that time 在当时not only but (also ) 不仅而且be regarded as: be considered to be, be thought of as 把看作为口语中: regard sb. / sth. as + (n. / pron. / adj. / doing / done)Eg: I regarded his idea as totally unacceptable. We cant regard the matter as settled.for 表示原因be able to 强调有能力be remembered 被永远记住go down: sinkon her first voyage 处女航, 首航with heavy loss of life 损失惨重,造成大批人员的死亡four days after setting out : four days after setting offspotted: suddenly discovered by a look outicy waters 水域,海域the alarm had been given 发出警to avoid不定式表目的just in time 很及时missing 现在分词做状语,表示对主句的补充说明narrowly 勉强地which 指代the immense wall of icefrom below 从下方 from above 从上方 so faint that no one thought thatso thatto ones horror 使某人感到惊讶five of her sixteen watertight compartments had been filled with water. The order was given 命令被下达to abandon ship 弃船,不定式做定语As (because ) there were not enough lifeboats 1,500 lives died.the order was given. 命令被下达to abandon ship 弃船 不定式做做定语ability 能力the ability to do sth.order sb. to do sth.be capable of doing sth. work-worker teach-teacher murder-murdererwrite-writer read-reader动词后加-ist, 表示某种主义者、信仰者;从事某种事业、研究的人copy-copyist type-typist novel - novelistdrug- druggist tobacco- tobacconist形容词后加-ness, 抽象名词,表示一种性质、情况、状态kind-kindness bitter-bitterness happy-happinesswilling-willngness某些动词后加-ion, 构成名词suggent-suggestion 以-te结尾的动词,把不发音的-e去掉,再加-iontranslate-translation complete- completiongraduate- graduation某些以-aim /-ain 结尾的动词,把-i 去掉,再加-ationexplain-explanation exclaim-exclamation以-ity 结尾,放在形容词之后,构成抽象名词,表示性质、状态以-able / -ible 对尾的形容词变成名词,充成 ability / -ibilityable-ability probable-probability possible-possibility mobile-mobilityExercese Supply the missing words in the following sentences:1 He studied physics at university.
