Unit 18 BeautyWhen I was in senior high school, unlike other boys who adored sports, I had a great affection for poetry. These poems could convey different emotions. Besides, when I felt blue, reading a good poem could refresh me.Every poem had its own theme and those about life and love often deeply struck me.It was my Chinese teacher who recommended these beautiful poems to me.Before meeting Mrs Liu, I was a troublesome student in my class and caused endless trouble for my class. Those superior students didnt like getting along with me.The headmaster even gave a command that I (should) be sent back home.It was evident that I lived in a freezing environment. However, our Chinese teacher, Mrs Liu, treated me in a different manner. She found that I had a great gift for Chinese literature out of my drawbacks. She gave me a recommendation that I should read some ancient poems. She chose some accessible poems for me.Later, she chose some difficult.I had a vague understanding of them.Mrs Liu explained the real meaning of them to me and taught me how to be a real man.Gradually, I changed in many ways.I read a range of poems. I felt ashamed for what I had done before in my conscience. Those poems delivered positive messages.Accompanied by these poems, I went through my high school happily. On graduation day, I made a commitment that I would be consistent in loving poems. If possible, I will become a Chinese teacher. 1How long does the woman work on Saturday?ASeven hours. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way. Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn phototaking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time. When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?” One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”(Text 10)If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a months holiday anywhere in the world, I would feel very surprised and very excited. I think I would decide to fly around the world and to visit three different countries. The countries I would visit would be Australia, the United States of America and Kenya. If I went to Australia, I would stay there for about two weeks. Before I went, I would write to one of my Australian friends. I would suggest that if it were possible, he should spend a week with me visiting Aboriginal tribes in the northern part of Australia. My friend could explain what we saw and he could translate what people said because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queensland University. If I went to the United States, I would stay there for about a week. I expect I would start by visiting New York. I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. After I had stayed for two or three days in New York, I would fly to San Francisco. I hope I could stay with my friends who live there and I would visit the city and other parts of California. Finally, I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. First, I hope I could visit the coast. Next, I would like to visit a game reserve. I imagine the wild animals of Africa the lion, elephant and hippopotamus are very exciting and beautiful. Finally, I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya where you can see snow on the Equator. If someone offered me this money, I would be amazed. Unfortunately, I do not think this will ever happen and I doubt if I shall ever visit these countries. AA Chilean (智利) soapopera star, a beauty from Ancient Pompeii and a freckled (雀斑的) boyish girl hardly make an average beauty show lineup. The first worldwide digital beauty contest to the surprise of many online fans was won by a woman who is virtually (虚拟) real flesh and bones.“Virtual models are not the antireal, they are a different representation of reality,” said Franz Cerami, the organiser of Miss Digital World. Each of the contestants had to provide the charming photo of high degrees, with date of birth and body measurements.Chilean Rodolfo Perez Ayala decided that no figure of his imagination could beat the beauty of his wife, Katty Kowaleczko, so he hired artist Flavio Parra to recreate her.Kowaleczko, who plays Paula Sandoval in the popular Latin American soap opera Tentacion, was transformed into Kattyko and won the digital contest with more than 17,000 online votes.“Im so happy Kattyko won.I think her strength is her similarity to a real woman not too luxurious or exposed,” Kowaleczko, 40, told reporters.“Her beauty is in her simplicity.” Kowaleczko was not afraid of being replaced by her 3D clone in movies or theatres, but hoped she would become “a sort of ambassador of Chilean beauty.” Cerami said Latin American interest in Miss Digital World had greatly increased since Kattyko joined the contest, which attracted about 3,600 entries from countries from Iran to Australia and even from the ancient Roman empire.“Pompea” was the digital reconstruction of a young woman killed by the outbreak of Vesuvius in 79 AD.“She was a slave, but also a rich mans lover. When her body was discovered, many jewels and a bangle (手镯) with the writing from the master to his servant girl were found,” said Genny Tortora, a professor at the University of Salerno who led Pompeas creative team.Other contestants included Kaya, the most realistic model with digital freckles, pouty (撅起的) lips and upturned nose. Now, Ceramis dream is to manage a form of virtual beauties, introducing them for calendars, games, ads, and movies. One is even reported to be heading for Playboys front page. 21.The winner in the first Miss Digital World contest was _.Aa star who performed in some soap operasBa beauty who came from ChileCa beauty who was from the ancient Roman empireDa madeup beauty based on a real woman解析:选D细节理解题。根据第二段中的“was won by a woman who is virtually real flesh and bones”可知,首届“世界数字小姐”最后的赢家是一位以真人为原型的虚拟美女。22Which of the following are the names for the digital beauties mentioned in the passage?AKattyko, Pompea, Kaya.BKatty Kowaleczko, Pompea, Playboy.CFlavio Parra, Genny Tortora, Franz Cerami.DRodolfo Perez Ayala, Pompea, Franz Cerami. Kaya。23The digital beauty “Pompea” was created by _.AGenny TortoraBa group of peopleCa young woman Da rich man解析:选B推理判断题。 24What the organiser of Miss Digital World wants to do next is _.Ato sell pictures of beauties for calendarsBto hold another contestCto put the digital beauties into practical useDto start an advertising company解析:选C细节理解题。 C。BWhat does Shakespeare offer English language learners apart from the theatrical and literary experience awaiting anyone who hears or reads his poems and sees or reads his plays? A great deal.Shakespeare is in many ways the perfect advanced teacher he shows us how to use the resources (资源) of a language as effectively (有效地) as possible. He has of course been an important general influence on the development of English, because many of his words and sentences have become part of everyday modern use.You_are_quoting_Shakespeare_when_you_say_that_truth_will_out,_the_game_is_up,_and_you_havent_slept_a_wink_(havent_slept_at_all)If you look in the unabridged (未删节的) Oxford English Dictionary (OED), youll find over 2,000 words which have their first recorded use in Shakespeare, such as assassination, outswear, and weatherbitten.Far more important, though, is the way his linguistic strategies (语言学策略) provide guidelines for modern users. He added un to make new words, such as unbuild and unmusical; today we do the same thing with uncool and unfunny. He added less to make airless and languageless; today we say such things as computerless and iPadless. He also turned nouns into verbs: his characters nose things as well as smell them; they ear things as well as hear them; they are windowed (displayed in a window) and mudded (covered by mud)Today, the Internet provides many examples of people texting, googling, and tweeting, and doing many things that were originally nouns. This is well within the spirit of Shakespeare.Shakespeare teaches learners how to be daring in their use of English.
