This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores(胚芽). Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.40. The main idea of the first paragraph is that _.A. plants are important for life B. plants cannot grow without airC. there are many plants in the world D. we can not live without water41. What can we infer(推断) from the passage ?A. Of all living things animals are most important B. Spores are seeds C. All fruits of flowering plants have seeds D. Without plants, man will die out 42. This passage may be taken from_.A. a medicine book B. a novel C. a science magazine D. an experiment report43. The underlined word “protected” in the third paragraph can be replaced by _.A. damaged B. polluted C. prevented D. guarded CWhat is teaching? Its a difficult question to answer. In fact, as long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”. Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed. Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children”. When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading. 44. According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when _. A. reading enriches childrens experienceB. teacher and learner roles are interchangeableC. teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD. children become highly motivated 45. The instruction of reading will be successful if . A. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingB. teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsC. teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD. teachers can make their teaching activities observable46. The underlined word “scrutiny” most probably means “ ”. A. inquiryB. suspicionC. controlD. observation 47. The main idea of the passage is that _. A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC. reading is more complicated than generally believedD. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught DAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why theyre always coming in for criticism. Their critics(批评家)seem to hate them because they have so much money to throw around. Why dont they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, its the consumer who pays. The poor old consumer! Hed have to pay a great deal more if advertising didnt create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods is largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the incidents and disasters. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmers is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price! Another thing we mustnt forget is the “small ads.” What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the “hatch, match and dispatch” column(栏目) but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or “agony” column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. Its the best advertisement for advertising there is!48.What is the main idea of this passage?A. Advertisements steal money from our pockets B. The critics get the wrong idea of advertisements.C.
