Therefore,for the English learners ,especially for the translation learners, learning and studying the translation of Hu Jintaos Report at 18th Party Congress will be beneficial to them. Owing to the differences of thinking ways,linguistic customs and expressions between Chinese and English and in order to make a better coherence with the Report, the translator used seven methods of amplification from two aspects of grammar and semantic,namely amplification of the subject-predicate,conjunctions or adverb,prepositions,pronouns,articles,words of implied meaning and annotations. Key Words: ellipsis; Hu Jintaos Report at 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China; language differences; Chinese-English translation 一、增译法的定义、功能与类型 增译法的英文是amplification。指根据英汉两种语言不同的思维方式、语言习惯和表达方式，在翻译时增添一些词、短句或句子，以便更准确地表达出原文所包含的意义。郭著章、李庆生编著的英汉互译教程中对增译法的定义是这样的：“为了使译文忠实的表达原文的意思与风格并使译文合乎表达习惯，必须增加一些词语，就叫做增译法”。因此可以知道增译不是无中生有地随意增加语言单位，而是增加原文中虽无其形但有其意的一些语言单位。为使译文更加通顺达意，所增补的语言单位必须是在修辞、结构或语义上必不可少的，增补后并无蛇足之感。简而言之，增译法就是为了更好的表达原意，在翻译时增添一些词、短句或句子的翻译方法。 增译法作为一种重要的翻译方法，一是保证译文语法结构的完整，二是保证译文意思的明确,这里指的不仅仅局限于明白原文的字面意思。因为翻译不仅是一种交流工具，更是一种文化桥梁，通过增译法的应用能够使读者更好的了解中国的文化背景，更好的理解十八大报告中的各项政策，便于读者加深对中国的了解，扩大与中国的政治经济文化交流。 英汉互译教程简单地归纳了九种增译法，即增译原文中找不到的对应的词语、动词、名词、主谓结构、定语、状语或副词、语气助词、代词和连词。本文主要是针对引用十八大报告汉译英实例，通过语法和语义两个层面详细讨论十八大报告中增译法的七种方法的运用。 二、增译法在十八大报告汉英翻译中的应用 增译法在十八大报告汉英翻译中的广泛使用，总体可归纳在以下两个层面： （一）语法层面 1、增译主谓结构 汉语属于意合语言，经常省略主语，而英语属形合语言，英文中的句子一般都有主句，且后面的从句内容都是围绕主句展开，因此在翻译的时候，通过主谓结构的增译，来保持英语句法的完整。 1）实践发展永无止境，认识真理永无止境，理论创新永无止境。 There is no end to practice, to seeking truth, or to making theoretical innovations. 2）解放和发展社会生产力，建设社会主义市场经济. It means we must release and develop the productive forces, develop the socialist market economy. 3）国土是生态文明建设的空间载体，必须珍惜每一寸国土。 It is in geographical space that ecological progress can be advanced, and we must cherish every bit of it. 4）牢牢把握发展实体经济这一坚实基础，实行更加有利于实体经济发展的政策措施 We should focus on developing the real economy as a firm foundation of the economy. We should adopt policies and measures to better facilitate the development of the real economy. 5）在党和人民创造性实践中奋力开拓中国特色社会主义更为广阔的发展前景 we will open up a bright future for developing socialism with Chinese characteristics through the creative practices of the Party and the people. 由于英语不同于汉语那样习惯把内容放在前面，而是常常把评论放在前面内容放在后面，尤其是内容比评论较多的时候，或者评论是多个同样的形容词时，往往往往通过增译形式主语there be和it 结构使句子显的更加规整，如例1），2),，3），分别增益there be，it 结构，使得译文更符合英式思维的逻辑。此外，例2），3），4)，5)则分别增译了we must，We should,和We will的主谓结构，使译文在在句式上和时态上都保持了英语语法的准确性。除了上面所举的例句以外，十八大报告中还有很多类似的表决心和任务的并列句都采用了增译主谓结构来保持句法完整的方法。 2、增译连词或副词 汉语是意合式语言，上下文的组织主要是依靠句子的内在意思来衔接，而不一定要连接词。英语则是形合式语言，上下文之间的衔接主要依靠连接词等句法手段来实现。且汉语句式较为松散，一般由多个句子成并列结构组成一段内容，而英语句式较为紧凑，一般一段内容由一个主句和多个分句成分枝形展开，且主从关系十分明显，因此在汉译英的译的过程中往往会增译连词和副词。 6）面向未来，深入贯彻落实科学发展观，对坚持和发展中国特色社会主义具有重大现实意义和深远历史意义，必须把科学发展观贯彻到我国现代化建设全过程、体现到党的建设各方面。 As we advance toward the future, thoroughly applying the Scientific Outlook on Development is of major immediate significance and far-reaching historical significance for upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics. 7）根据我国经济社会发展实际，要在十六大、十七大确立的全面建设小康社会目标的基础上努力实现新的要求。Basing ourselves on Chinas actual economic and social development, we must work hard to meet the following new requirements while working to fulfill the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects set forth at the Sixteenth and Seventeenth National Congresses of the Party. 8）确立了社会主义基本制度，成功实现了中国历史上最深刻最伟大的社会变革 carrying out socialist transformation and establishing the basic system of socialism, thereby accomplishing the most profound and the greatest social transformation in Chinas history. 9）在探索过程中，虽然经历了严重曲折，但党在社会主义建设中取得的独创性理论成果和巨大成就，为新的历史时期开创中国特色社会主义提供了宝贵经验、理论准备、物质基础。In the course of socialist development, the Party developed distinctively creative theories and made tremendous successes despite serious setbacks it went through, thus providing invaluable experience as well as the theoretical and material basis for launching the great initiative of building socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new historical period. 例6），7）,9)分别增译了as,while,and,as well as这些连词，例8),9)中分别增译了thereby，thus这些副词，使上下文的连接更为紧凑，体现了英语的形合美。 3、增译介词 10）城乡区域发展差距和居民收入分配差距依然较大。 The development gap between urban and rural areas and between regions is still large, and so are income disparities. 11）让我们高举中国特色社会主义伟大旗帜 Let us hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics 12）加强社会建设，必须以保障和改善民生为重点。 In strengthening social development, we must give high priority to ensuring and improving the peoples wellbeing. 4、增译冠词 13）十七大以来的五年 Over the past five years since the Seventeenth Party Congress 14）社会和谐是中国特色社会主义的本质属性。 Social harmony is an inherent attribute of socialism with Chinese characteristics 15）努力营造公平的社会环境，保证人民平等参与、平等发展权利。 and foster a fair social environment and ensure peoples equal right to participation in governance and to development.（二）语义层面 1、增译代词 汉语中常常省略主语及其他一些代词，而英语在一般情况下不能省略主语， 即英语中代词使用频率较高，凡说到人的器官和归某人所有的或与某人有关的事物时，必须在前面加上物主代词。因此，在汉译英过程中，往往要增译物主代词以更好地传达原文意思。 16）必须坚持人民主体地位。必须坚持解放和发展社会生产力。We must maintain the peoples principal position in the country. We must continue to release and develop the productive forces. 17）彰显了中国特色社会主义的巨大优越性和强大生命力，增强了中国人民和中华民族的自豪感和凝聚力。 All this shows the superiority and vitality of socialism with Chinese characteristics and has enhanced the pride and cohesiveness of the Chinese people and nation. 18）明确提出走自己的路、建设中国特色社会主义，科学回答了建设中国特色社会主义的一系列基本问题They called for taking our own road and building socialism with Chinese characteristics and provided scientific answers to basic questions in this regard. 19）我们一定要毫不动摇坚持、与时俱进发展中国特色社会主义，不断丰富中国特色社会主义的实践特色、理论特色、民族特色、时代特色。 We must unswervingly adhere to socialism with Chinese characteristics, develop it as required by the times, constantly enrich it in both practice and theory and enhance its distinctive national features in keeping up with the times. 20）实践充分证明，中国特色社会主义是当代中国发展进步的根本方向，只有中国特色社会主义才能发展中国。 This fully shows that socialism with Chinese characteristics is what we must pursue if we are to achieve development and make progress in contemporary China and that only socialism with Chinese characteristics can enable China to develop itself. 2、增译原文中没有的词语和暗含词语 在汉译英中，对于原文中隐含的一些成分或内容，尤其是一些与原文的背景有关的信息，要用明显的语言形式表达出来，虽然对意义并无增加，但是可以增加信息的凸显度。因此，要注意增补一些原文中暗含而没有明言的词语和一些概括性的词语，以确保译文意思的完整。 21）载人航天、探月工程、载人深潜、超级计算机、高速铁路等实现重大突破。 and major breakthroughs have been made in manned spaceflights, the lunar exploration program, and in the development of a manned deep-sea submersible, supercomputers and high-speed railways. 22）经济平稳较快发展。综合国力大幅提升。The economy has developed steadily and rapidly.
