(20分)阅读理解BIt may be hard to believe, but the American Revolution(革命)the war that freed the American states from British controlbegan over a cup of tea. Tea was not the only thing that caused the war, of course, but it played a very big part. The British peoples love of tea is well-known. When the British won control over mush of North America in the early 1700s, they brought their tea- drinking habits with them. Tea quickly became the continents most popular drink. As tea could not be grown locally, just as in Britain, it was shipped into the countrymostly from India. In the early 1700s, the Britain government made a special deal with the East India Company, as an English trading company. They agreed that no other company was allowed to bring tea to Britain or any country controlled by Britain, including America. It was a great deal for the East India Company, since it meant that the company could decide whatever price it wanted for its products. And it always decided on a high price! In North America, the local people did not like having to pay such high prices. Instead of overpaying for tea from the British, they turned to Dutch traders, who secretly brought tea to the country that was just as goodand much less expensive. Although this broke the law, the American people didnt care. They got the same cup of tea at a much lower price. The East India Company, however, didnt like this at all. By the 1760s, they were losing millions of pounds each year to Dutch tradersa huge amount of money in a time when 60 a year was considered a good income. Instead of reducing their prices to compete with the Dutch, the company asked the British government for help and the government agreed. In 1767, the British introduced new law that increased the prices of all goods which were brought into America. These laws helped make the East India Company even richer and forced local people to pay much more for everything. The American leaders asked the British government not to do so, but the British refused to listen. These unfair laws increased Americans anger about British rule and the rest, as they say, is history.(1)In the early 1700s where did most tea drunk in America come from?A . ChinaB . IndiaC . (8分)阅读理解CStir-fry, Peking duck, fried rice the tastes of Britain.Britain?! I hear you cry. But British people take afternoon tea with sandwiches! Those are Chinese dishes!According to a survey by Food Network UK, nine out of 10 British people said their favorite food was Asian. The number one international food in Britain was stir-fry, according to the Daily Mail, with 55 percent saying they ate it often.Britain has a very multicultural history. Centuries of history brought dishes from across the world. Almost every town in the UK has a Chinese or Indian restaurant, and Italian, Thai and Jamaican are not unusual. Perhaps its no surprise that they learned to cook and eat dishes from other countries. Traditional British food doesnt have a great reputation (名声).International food has become British food even when British are cooking. Another survey by the UKTV food channel in 2009 showed the most common dish British could cook without a recipe was Italian spaghetti bolognaise (意大利肉酱面).However, if youre in the UK and think a trip to a Chinese restaurant would be a great way to stay away from homesickness, think again. Many British Chinese dishes arent exactly Chinese. At the end of every British Chinese meal, you get a sweet crisp known as a traditional Chinese fortune cookie. I have lived in Beijing for almost a year. I have yet to eat a fortune cookie that is really Chinese. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain remains more awake than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place. The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it first-night influence. In Japan they say, If you change your bed, you cant sleep, said Yuka Sasaki, one of the reports writers. You dont sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they dont know if the left half keeps watch all night, or whether it works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half. For some, this research may be calming.
