They stood behind large food trucks distributing meals to 4,000 homeless people for their wedding reception on the border town of Kilis. The idea came from the bridegrooms father, Ted, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization. For the past few years, the organization has distributed daily meals to thousands of people whove suffered from natural disasters. He approached a representative of the organization and suggested that the family cover part of the costs of feeding them for the day. Then he told his son, who was surprised by the suggestion, but soon won oven When he told that to the bride, she was really shocked but finally accepted because in southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need. They love to share their food, their table and everything they have. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it. So, they arrived at the distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients (接受者).On that evening, the newly married couple were still pleased with their decision to quit a personal celebration for one with a greater good. “Its like sharing a dinner with your friends and family who have this kind of thing on a daily basis or sharing something with people who dont even have the most basic things,” Michael said. “ Hopefully, this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers and sisters in need.”24. It is the story of a young boy named Pi who spends 227 days at sea with a small group of animals after disaster strikes their ship and is an account of his journey of survival and hardship. Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, on whom Life of Pi is based, is a young boy living in Pondicherry, India, where his father owns a zoo. The story starts when Patels family decide to move to Canada, along with their zoo animals for their new home. However, because of the bad weather, the ship sinks. Pi along with an orangutan (猩猩), an injured zebra, a hyena (鬣狗) and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker are the only survivors who take shelter in a small lifeboat. Both the injured zebra and the orangutan are soon killed and eaten by the hyena. The tiger in turn kills and eats the hyena, leaving just the two of them alone on the boat now. In an effort to avoid being eaten by Richard Parker, Pi acts himself as the head of the group and remains safe from harm. Since he does not want the tiger to die for fear of going mad by being alone on the boat, he fishes and feeds the two of them in order to stay alive. The life of Pi then enters its third stage when their lifeboat washes up on the shores of Mexico and the tiger escapes into a nearby forest leaving Pi alone. After the Mexicans refuse to believe Pis story, he changes his tale by replacing the animals with his mother, a cook and a sailor and asks the Mexicans which one they prefer. They prefer hearing the first story though they do not believe a word of it. In my view, Life of Pi is a must read book for all those who love reading.28. D On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted that 42% of Americans could be overweight by 2030. Our expanding waistlines lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article In The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situationsin an airplane crash, for example. The New York Times Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength(强度) first set moe than 60 years ago require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg). Today, the average American man weighs nearly 194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg). Negroni reports: “If a heavier person pletely fills seat, the seat is not likely to behave as intended during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption that is built into the aircraft seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly.” “Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from the uncontrolled movements of the passenger.” Most plaints about airplane seats focus on their lack of fort and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Investigators of the issue got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to ment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight dummies (人体模型). Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said. Fortunately, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the boards investigators have never seen an accident involving a mercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.32. What is the article in The New York Times mainly concerned with? A. The size of airplane seats and seat belts.B. Airplane crashes involving mercial planes.C. Safety of overweight airplane passengers.D. A medical problem caused by being overweight.33. Robert Salzar would probably agree that . A. overweight passengers should buy two seatsB. standards for airplane seat strength should be raisedC. the government should help produce safer planesD. passengers should know how to protect themselves34. We can learn from the text that . A. airplane seat makers have taken action nowB. there are few plaints about airplane seatsC. only a small number of airplane accidents involve the overweightD. those seats near the overweight may suffer too35. What is the best title for the text? A. Why Do Passengers Feel Anxious about Flying?B. Are Airplane Seats Safe Enough for the Overweight?C. When Will the Overweight Enjoy Their Flight?D.
