He wrote a letter to me and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life. Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didnt know what I would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when Ive felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, “Is this what you were talking about , Dad ? Should I keep going?” A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, Ive e to believe he would want me to move on to what es next: to be proud of , and believe in somebody else. Its time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids dont hold back because theyre afraid to fail. Theyre only afraid of failing us. They dont worry about being disappointed. Their fear - as mine was until my fathers letter- is of being a disappointment. Give your children permission to succeed. Theyre waiting for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more plete , that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts :“Dont worry; youll do something great .”Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.61. Yet, what is it about junk food that is so pletely irresistible(无可抗拒的)? For one thing, its everywhere. From chips in fast food restaurants to candy in supermarkets, junk food always seems available. We spent money like it was going out of style. Then, the market turned and my husbands job as a bigwig(大人物) at a construction pany was gone. The pany was closing down for ever.We both started looking for jobs right away, but there werent any to be found. With each passing day our panic increased and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of great love for my husband that I hadnt felt in years.Thats why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I knew that he had no control over the economy, however, he constantly degraded (降低身份)himself and his spirit sunk lower with each unkind ment. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job. Finally one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, “We have four healthy children. Thats whats important. That makes you a rich man.”“But what if we lose the house? Theyll hate meyoull hate me.” he replied.I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye.“If we live in a cardboard box on the empty place across the street I will be happyas long as I have you.” I smiled again as I realized that I wasnt saying it. Somehow, in all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do.”I could see relief wash through him as his shoulders and neck relaxed and the tension left his body. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadnt in quite some time. We are still struggling financially, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money cant buy and no one can take away from us.69.In the wifes opinion, what is important in her family?A. E The hole in the Earths ozone layer(臭氧层)has until now protected Antarctica from the worst effects of global warming. But scientists have warned that as the hole closes up in the next few decades, temperatures on the continent could rise by around 3, with melting(融化)ice leading to a global sea level increase of up to 1.4 meters. In the past decades the western Antarctica has seen rapid ice loss as the world has warmed, but the other parts of the continent have been cooling, resulting in a 10% increase in ice in the seas around the area. This is because the hole in the ozone layer has increased cold winds in Antarctica, making much of the continent surface colder than usual. But now that the gasses that cause the ozone hole have not been allowed, scientists expect the hole to repair itself within the next 50 to 60 years. By then the cooling effect will have disappeared slowly and the Antarctic will face the full influence of global warming. This means an increase in air temperatures of around 3 and a reduction in sea ice by around a third. The biggest threat(威胁)to the continent es from warming seas. Robert Johnson, a scientist who checks Antarctica ice sheets, said, “The ice sheets in Antarctica are hundreds of metres thick. But once warm ocean waters start flowing underneath, the ice will begin thinning and could break up very quickly. ”Thinning ice sheets cause ice to break away from the continent and to melt even faster. Escaping ice from western Antarctica has already resulted in a 10% rise in global sea level in recent decades. Johnson believes that international action to reduce global warming is required immediately or it may be too late. “Everything
