AA recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlours(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so its not unusual for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children. There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of babies a disease with no known cure.Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat,and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the sweet little thing has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on Rover or Bonzo. Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someones pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, its time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say, keep cutting!1. The doggy parlours are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show _. A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children.,即如今人们在饲养宠物上花销巨大的现状。 I can see no reason why we should get upset. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases. B。BThe first potatoes were grown by the Incas of South America, more than 400 years ago. Their descendants(后代) in Ecuador and Chile continue to grow the vegetable as high as 14,000 feet up in the Andes Mountains. (Thats higher than any other food will grow.) Early Spanish and English explorers shipped potatoes to Europe, and they found their way to North America in the early 1600s.People eat potatoes in many waysbaked, mashed, and roasted, to name just three. However, in the United States most potatoes are eaten in the form of French fries. One fastfood chain alone sells more than $1 billion worth of fries each year. No wonder, then, that the pany pays particular attention to the way its fries are prepared. Before any fry makes it to the people who eat at these popular restaurants,it must pass many separate tests. Fail any one of these tests and the potato is rejected. To start with, only Russet Burbank potatoes are used. These Idaho potatoes have less water content than other kinds, which can have as much as 80 percent water. Once cut into “shoestrings” shapes, the potatoes are partly fried in a secret blend of oils, sprayed with liquid sugar to brown them, steam dried at high heat, then flash frozen for shipment to individual restaurants. Before shipping, every shoestring is measured. Forty percent of a batch must be between two and three inches long. Another 40 percent has to be over three inches. What about the 20 percent that are left in the batch? Well, a few short fries in a bag are okay,it seems. So,now that you realize the enormous size and value of the potato crop, you can understand why most people agree that this part of the food industry is no “small potatoes”【解题导语】本文介绍了土豆被引进美国的历史及炸薯条在美国食物产业中举足轻重的地位。1Potatoes in North America came directly from AChileBEuropeCEcuadorDthe Andes MountainsB解析:细节理解题。 2Why does the pany pay special attention to the way the fries are prepared?ABecause selling fries is a big business.BBecause fries are not easy to prepare at all.CBecause Americans are particular about fries.DBecause the government has a strict rule for that.A解析:推理判断题。 One fastfood chain alone sells more than $1 billion worth of fries each year. easily是副词,意为“容易地”。 故用which/and that。 unless意为“除非”,相当于if.not;if意为“如果”。 故用if。 end up doing sth. make up ones mind to do sth. 故去掉the。 故用and。 Dear Mike,How are you doing these days?_Yours,Li Hua答案:范文赏读Dear_Mike,_How_are_you_doing_these_days?Aimed at providing a platform where students can have a chance to exchange and make use of their books, the annual campus book fair will soon be held in our school. The fair will attract a huge crowd from the entire school, who are to sell, purchase and exchange their books with their peers. As a regular visitor, Ive found myself increasingly drawn by the fair. For one thing, the fair exhibits books of hundreds of types on diverse topics, motivating us to further develop our reading habits and helping to broaden our horizons. For another, most books are sold at a lower price than what the bookstores offer. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to host such a book fair better.Yours,_Li_Hua
