One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine. The next moment, metal, flesh and bones were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash. Another cyclist, biking carelessly, had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic. As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life, another disaster also occurred on April 14th, 2010. It cost the airline industry $1.7 billion. Ten million travelers were stuck for days. Economics all over the world were disturbed. This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, one of Icelands many volcanoes. However, volcanoes are not all bad. In fact, they are necessary. They are responsible for the birth of new earth, and for the creation of rich soil. This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. But cancelling 48% of the worlds flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint. Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I would never have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations. In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal (地热的) energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future. I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a newfound love in Earth sciences.21Which was an effect of the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull? AThe economy was cost globally by the eruption. BCarbon dioxide increased temporarily. CMost of the worlds planes were held up. DThe earth in Iceland was terribly polluted. 根据文章第二段中的“Economics all over the world were disturbed.” 22Why did the writer mention the Eldfell volcano? AIt broke out in Iceland on April 14th as well. BIt symbolized the accident that changed his life. CIt told us to make the best of a given situation. DIt encouraged him to know more about himself. 根据文章倒数第二段中的“After their plan worked . their homes.”并结合“One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future.” 23What is the best title for the passage? AEscape from Volcanoes BInspiration from Disasters CLove for Earth Sciences DAttitude Toward Nature答案:B标题判断题。 B Dujiangyan is the oldest manmade water system in the world, and a wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6,000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province. In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the regions governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed. The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead, Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming. Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention of gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 20metrewide canals were carved through the mountain. Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one featureunlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.24What are the benefits of Dujiangyan according to the first paragraph?AReducing flooding and watering farmland.BProtecting the mountain and reducing flooding.CWatering farmland and improving water quality.DDrying the river and supplying cities with water. 根据第一段的第二句“Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6,000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province.” 25What was the main cause of the Minjiang Rivers flooding?AHeavy rain.BMelting snow.CLow river banks.DSteep mountains. 根据第二段的第三句“They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed.” 26How was Li Bing able to break the rocks of Mount Yulei?ABy using gunpowder.BBy flooding the rocks with water.CBy applying a heating and cooling technique.DBy breaking the rocks with hammers and spades. 根据第四段的第三句“He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed.” 27Why is Dujiangyan greatly admired by scientists today?AIt preserves much of the natural river life.BIt took very little time to complete the project.CThe building techniques used were very modern.DIt has raised the living standard of the local people. 根据最后一段的最后一句“Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one featureunlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.” C Each year thousands of tourists visit the polar regions (极地地带) of the Arctic and Antarctica. These trips provide unforgettable experiences for people to experience nature in the polar regions. But the increasing number of tourists can have a serious effect on the regions. Should tourists be allowed to visit the polar regions? About 40,000 tourists visit Antarctica each year. More than five million travel to the Arctic and Subarctic. Transporting tourists to the regions increase ship and airplane traffic, and adds to the risk of pollution, oil spills, and other environmental damage. Because the places where plants and animals are accessible (可接近的) are few in number, tourist traffic can become concentrated in specific areas, putting at risk Arctic vegetation (植物). Activities such as boating, fishing, and skiing can also cause trouble to animals, according to GRIDArendal, an organization working with the United Nations Environment Program. Antarctic New Zealand environment manager Neil Gilbert told the AssociatedPress in 2013 that increased monitoring is needed to measure the environmental influence of tourism in the polar regions. “We really dont know what additional influence tourism numbers are having on what is already a very rapidly changing environment,” he said. Others say that access to these very special parts of the world should not be restricted (限制) to only researchers and scientists. Polar tourism allows people to develop deep personal connections with the polar regions. “Those who travel to the Arctic or Antarctica often become cheerleaders for supporting those places, not only in the form of speaking with friends and family about important issues in those regions, but also giving money to conservation (保护) organizations,” said Jim Sano, vicepresident for travel and conservation at World Wildlife Fund. Polar tourism also provides other benefits. Many Arctic locals rely on tourists as a source of income, says Sano. “One in 11 jobs are related to travel and tourism,” he says. “This encourages the local people to protect the place, and they can be much more effective guardians than the government.” What do you think?28According to the text, why do the polar regions suffer from environmental problems?ABecause of the lack of protection.BBecause of the overuse of resources.CBecause of the bad behavior of tourists.DBecause of the great number of tourists. 29GRIDArendals concern is related to the polar regions _. 30According to Jim Sano, tourists who visit the polar regions are likely to _. Aset up charitable organizations Bchange their attitudes to the earth Cbecome concerned about the places Dencourage their friends to visit the places答案:C推理判断题。 31Polar tourism can benefit the locals by _. Abroadening their views Bhelping the local economy Cletting them get access to modern life Dconnecting them with the government closely答案:B推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第二句中的“as a source of income”和第三句中的“One in 11 jobs are related to travel and tourism”可知,旅游可以增加当地居民的收入,解决就业,促进极地地带的经济发展。DA sandstorm, also known as a dust storm, is exactly what it sounds like. A very strong windstorm especially in the desert carries clouds of sand or dust, and greatly reduces visibility (可见度). This wind is usually caused by convection currents (对流), which are created by intense heating of the ground, and is usually strong enough to move entire sand dunes. Air is unstable when heated, and this instability (不稳定性) in the air will cause the mixture of higher winds with winds in the lower atmosphere, producing strong surface winds. Sandstorms can disturb travels, and sometimes destroy whole roads, and dry flat areas, such as parts of the western United States. Similar dust storms can be found on the planet Mars, and are thought to be seasonal. Today, the destruction of forests and too much farming of farmland can cause a sandstorm problem. Overgrazing and too much use of water resources can also cause sandstorms. In the United States of America, sandstorms are rare because of the lack of large deserts and more importantly the development of proper agricultural techniques. The last recorded destructive sandstorm in American history was the Dust Bowl, one that occurred on July 16,1971 and was widely recorded by meteorologists (气象学家) To protect themselves from sandstorms, some people wear protective suits. Special equipment can be fixed in some cars to prevent sand from getting into the engine. Sandstorms can cause coughs, and the sand and dust have also been known to be able to carry “infectious diseases”. Sand particles, unlike dust ones, will block air passages, and cause the person who breathes them in to choke. Dust particles may cause an allergic (过敏的) reaction.32Which of the following plays the biggest part in forming sandstorms?AThe instability of the sand.BThe instability of the wind.CThe speed of the wind.DThe intense heating of the ground. 根据第一段第三句中的“This wind is usually caused by convection currents(对流),which are created by intense heating of the ground”可推知,因为地面的酷热导致了空气流动,从而产生风,风再吹动沙丘导致了沙尘暴的产生。 33From the second paragraph, we can learn that at present _.Asandstorms are more often seen on the MarsBhuman activities are the main cause of sandstormsCfarming brings more harm than good to humansDsandstorms have led to the lack of clear water resources答案:B推理判断题。 B。34Why are sandstorms not common in the USA?AThere are fewer deserts.BThere is less agriculture.CThe improvement of agricultural techniques.DThe meteorologists research on the sandstorms. 根据第三段首句中的“sandstorms are rare because of the lack of large deserts and more importantly the development of proper agricultural techniques”可知,在美国沙尘暴很罕见的原因,一是面积较大的沙漠少(不是沙漠少),更重要的是正确的农业技术的发展。故选C。35The last paragraph mainly talks about _.Ahow to protect oneself against sandstormsBthe harm that sandstorms can do to peoples healthCthe differences between sandstorms and dust onesDhow to lead a normal life when a sandstorm happens答案:B段落大意题。
