She was humorous and kind, and I loved being around her. She was also a good listener. At the end of the year, she announced that she was moving to Miami, and I was unhappy. We exchanged addresses and became pen pals. I could tell her anything, and she treated me with respect even though I was a teenager. In Miami, Mrs, Freeman worked as a realtor(房地产经纪人), but she managed to find time to write letters, often while sitting in a model home and waiting for customers . She wrote interesting stories and always took my concerns seriously. She had sent me an open invitation to visit-“Get your shoes on and your bags packed! You are wele anytime!” I spent three weeks with her in Miami, excited to do anything from washing dishes to touring houses with her. Her love of poems, music, and creative writing encouraged me to develop my own interest. Two years later, she surprised me by attending my high school graduation. Later that year, my family decided to spend Christmas in Miami and I couldnt wait to see my friend again. When I arrived at her house I had hoped to talk to her about school, but she was in a hospital bed in the bedroom. She had cancer of the liver(肝脏), and family members were caring for her. I was in shock. A month after we got back home, we received a call that Mrs. Freeman had died. To this day, more than 50 years later, I still see her smile and think about the advice she gave me. Through years of hard work, Mr. Jones overcame his stuttering by practicing poetry, public speaking and acting. Although it was a hard road, he was able to break through. Now Mr. Jones has bee one of the greatest actors in American history. And his voice is one of the most well-known ones in the world. Without his hard work and a teacher who believed in him, Star Wars, The Lion King and American films would not be the same! In the Midwest where I grew up, it was customary to greet everyone with a smile, a wave, or some other friendly forms. But it wasnt until I moved to Boston that my friendly forms were met with no response from runners along the Charles River. At first I would try to catch someones eye and say hello. But then, not wanting to destroy their personal thinking time, I backd off and would carefully wait for some kind of signal(信号) before making my move. California was a mixed bag because there are so many immigrants(移民)that a runners preference for waving greatly relies one where he/she es from. In the suburbs, it was much more mon than in the city. But now that were living in Oregon, I decide to reuse the wave during my running. As a loyal pro-waver, I think the mid-run wave is an unspoken conversation about the beautiful scenery. More importantly, its a small gesture but has large meaning. Just the other day, I overheard a gentleman practicing his Spanish. I held the front door for him as we were leaving, and he said, “Gracias!” “De nada,”I said with a smile. He nodded, laughed and said, “Have a good day!” It was a 15-second exchange, but I think we were both happy on the day. The same goes for the runners wave:Its not about disturbing(打扰) someones thought or destroying a workout but about creating more fiendship in running. So if you see me out there on the roads, you know what to expect and what Ill be looking for in return.29. What happened to the author after moving to Boston?A. He didnt offer to greet others.B. He always greeted others actively.C. He frequently met unfriendly runners. D. He enjoyed his personal thinking time.30.What may affect people to wave or not in California?A. Their races. B. Their living areas. C. Their personalities. D. Their preferences.31.Why did the author mention the story between him and a gentleman?A. To tell us that he could speak Spanish. B. To introduce a way to make new friends.C. To help us understand the real meaning of smiling.D. To show that greeting builds up beautiful relationships. D International Womens Day takes place every year on 8 March to celebrate the achievements of women all over the world. It started with a protest(抗议) that took place in New York City in 1908 where women went out onto the streets to demand(要求) the right to vote, shorter working hours and better pay.Since then it has taken many forms and today its a global event. In some countries, March 8 is an official holiday and in other countries its an official holiday but only for woman. In todays world it may appear that women have all the same opportunities as men. The BBC did a report a few years ago that showed that in the UK women occupied(占据) only 30.9% of the most senior positions across some jobs in areas like politics, business and policing. So, although progress has been made since 1908 , there is still a lot to do before we see an equal number of men and women in the top jobs and receiving equal pay. A lot of special events take place in towns and cities all over the UK to celebrate International Womens Day. They are designed to celebrate the role of women in society and to make us think about the progress that has been made, but also about the changes that still need to take place to ensure the world is a fair and equal place for all its citizens. Can you imagine a future when theres no need at all to have an International Womens Day or there is total equality for men and women? Hmmm.something to think about but perhaps in your lifetime this could happen?32. Why did women organize a protest in 1908?A. They were not fairly treated. B. They wanted to get freedom.C. Women have all the same chances as men. C. One third of the top jobs are occupied by women.D. Theres still a long way to go for women to get full equality.34. Whats the main purpose of holding special events in the UK?A. To help women gain more rights.B. To celebrate womens achievements.C. To make sure women can have a happier festival.D. To make the world an equal place for all its citizens.35.What opinion does the author hold according to the last paragraph?A. There shouldnt be international Womens Day.B. Women will enjoy true equality in the future.C. We should work for the full equality for women.D. Total equality for men and women is perhaps a dream.第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。(每小题2.5分) If you work hard to have a positive attitude, you might be surprised by how much better you feel about yourself and life in general. 36 The less stress you feel, the better you will feel generally.
