And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity. When it es to other areas of performance, however, the impact of background music is more plicated. The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial to output probably has its roots in the so-called “Mozart effect”. Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation performance(空间旋转能力) is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, pared to no sound at all. How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a phenomenon called the irrelevant sound effect. To study irrelevant sound effect, participants in the research are asked to plete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring any background noise. Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal abilities(复述能力), and second, the sound must contain acoustical variation(声学变化). Where the sound does not vary much acoustically, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions. The irrelevant sound effect itself es from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same timeone from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the recall task, and the effort in ensuring that irrelevant order information from the sound is not processed actually hinders(阻碍) this ability.A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical music. In this situation, the two sources of wordsfrom the task and the soundare in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics. What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels. 1. “Mozart effect” is mentioned to _.A. explain how music can relax people B. show music can improve performanceC. advise people to listen to Mozart music D. stress Mozart music gains wide attention 2. It can be inferred that participants in the research _.A. have improved their rehearsal ability B. perform better in the quiet conditionsC. ignore the background noise successfullyD. prefer the music with great sound variation3. Paragraph 6 is written to _.A. support an idea B. make a contrastC. introduce a topic D. describe a fact4. What is the best title for the passage?A. Music shapes your lifeB. Music develops your creativityC. Choose quiet music for your workD. Does music make you concentrate?3、 From Nikes “swoosh” symbol to Starbucks- twin-tailed mermaid (美人鱼), the worlds largest panies take great care of their logos. For most people the logos of such firms immediately conned our minds to the business in question, without the need to see its name. Think of the golden arches of a popular fast-food chain, or the apple with a bite taken out of it representing a certain puter pany. This type of instant recognition is the holy grail(圣杯) for a business, which is why the worlds multinational panies can spend millions on their logos like UK oil group BP, which back in 2000 spent 136 million introducing its current sunflower design. Other firms of a similar size, whose logo is simply their name written out in a stylized way, can spend hundreds of thousands on a new font (字体),or a different color. But how easy is it for a business to pick a good logo, and how important is it at the end of the day? If you are presented with a design for your pany logo that is immediately likeable and sympathizes with your values, you might be wise to take a long hard look at it, bin it, and start again. “This is the clearest choice that has been putbefore the British people for a generation, Miliband said , between a Tory government that works only for the privileged few or a Labor government that will put working families first. Sagi Haviv says that many of the worlds most successful logos were not liked on first viewing. Thats the opinion oi Sagi Haviv, partner at New York graphic design firm Chemrayeff & Geismer & Haviv ( CGH). Its never love at first sight,” he says. A good logo, a good trademark, gains meaning and power over time. CGH has been responsible for some of the most recognizable US business logos of the past 50 years, such as Chase Bank, National Geographic, Mobile, NBC and HarperCollins.1.What do we know about the logo for a pany?A.The panies dont need logos at all.B.The panies design their logos by themselves.C.The largest panies think highly of their logos.D.The largest panies are simply to make their logos.2.What does the underlined word likeable mean in Paragraph 3?A.Moving.B.Pleasing.C.Puzzling.D.Disappointing.3.Why does Sagi Haviv think most logos were disliked at first?A.Because the partners at New York graphic design logos.B.Because CGH has been responsible for US business logos.C.Because a good logo gains meaning and power over time.D.Because the panies can spend millions on their logos.4.What is the best title for the passage?A.The Best Logo B.A Logo of a panyC.The Design of a Logo D.The Importance of a Good Logo4、Alarming headlines suggest one in four teenage girls in the UK are self-harming, motivatedby sex discrimination and pressures to look good in a selfie(自拍)society. These stories efrom a report by UK charity The Children Society, based on an ongoing survey of 11,000 children aged 14. Among the girls, 22 per cent said they had self-harmed while boys 9 per cent. But while the term self-harm improves images of teenagers cutting themselves, that may, thankfully, be only the most extreme end of a broader range. In this survey, participants weremerely asked if they had “hurt themselves on purpose in any way”.Some could have answered yes for things like punching (击拳)a wall in dissatisfaction or deliberately getting falling-down drunk. Others could have thought the question included mental hurt. Such self-destructive behaviour would naturally be of concern to parents, but wouldn5t be that unusual for teenagers. Max Davie, a health promotion officer, does believe that self-harm among teens is somewhat on the risebut thinks the question in this survey was not specific enough to reveal its real universality. The latest headlines join an ongoing account about a mental health crisis in todays youth. Some blame cutbacks in social services, while others point to a loosening of sexual standards putting teens at risk. For those cautious of new technologies, it is social media or the latest popular puter games. But such reports also deserve some skepticism. Claims of high rates of depression are usually based on surveys with very loose, non-medical criteria. Thankfully, clinical depression is still rare in this age group. In fact, a different and regularly repeated survey has found no change in 11-to-15-year-olds happiness with life as a whole between 1995 and 2016. Nor did their satisfaction with their appearance change, which makes it strange to blame the selfie culture for the apparent self-harm increase. This survey, called Understanding Society, even found improvement in happiness withfamily and schoolwork over that period. These more optimistic findings were also in the latest Childrens Society report but were buried at the bottom of their press release.Davie thinks the rise in self-harm may not be due to a rise in unhappiness, but simply that this age group now sees self-harm as a more culturally acceptable way to express extreme sufferings. “It may be that previously people didnt know that this was something you could do. If people are talking about something and normalizing it, its probably more likely that their peers will do it”.If that is the case, it is all the more reason not to make self-harm seem more mon than it really is.1. In response to the survey reported by The Childrens Society, the author believes _.A. the survey is unscientific as it asked very specific questionsB. the self-destructive behavior for teens is worrying to parentsC. the number of self-harming teens is alarming because of selfiesD. the images of teens self-harm are being more specific2. What does Max Davie think of self-harm among teenagers?A. The situation is too worrying.B. The rise is somewhat beneficial.C. The problem is actually widespread.D. The phenomenon is not so universal.3. What can we know from the survey called Understanding Society?A. Teenagers in the past lived a happier life.B. Selfie culture is responsible for the increase of self-harm.C. There is no connection between self-harm and selfle.D. With selfie teenagers are more satisfied with their appearance.4. The last two paragraphs mainly imply that_.A. self-harm results from too much pressureB. self-harm is the result of social developmentC. teens need correct guidance from the outsideD. teens should avoid following peers examples5、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Apologizing the Right Way to a Friend Why are apologies so difficult?
