With the use of advanced digital payment technology, including biological recognition and in-depth learning, the man leaves in a minute. Theres no cashier in the store. At a large university, students use a hand-scanning machine that authorizes their entry into the gym. Those people are using “smart machines” which identify people by their physical characteristics. These new devices use fingers, hands, faces, eyes and voices. Some machines may even use smells. This new technology, called biometrics, gets information from parts of the body.In the past, biometric machines were used mainly in government agencies or in prisons. But now that the cost of the technology is lower, these machines are starting to be used everywhere, from border services to schools. Some people, however, are concerned that these machines will mean the destruction of personal privacy. They worry that the machines will get personal information about them. “I know it seems like these machines are invading our privacy, but actually, biometric machines help to protect it,” says Jay Tarkett, who works at a pany that develops the machines. “They can be used instead of passwords on a puter, for example. They can also identify criminals at airports. So, really, they help to promote public safety, and all the information stored is kept confidential by the machine itself.”Some people dont like the idea of using fingerprints because they associate them with criminals, and feel like they are being accused of something. In addition, they dont work for some people, such as bricklayers, who wear down their fingerprints. Yet, face recognition does work well because the subject doesnt really have to do anything. To cash a check at a bank, for example, the customer has to do nothing more than look at a machine similar to an automatic teller. If the face matches the picture kept on file, the customer gets the money with no problems. The need to carry identification with you from place to place, then, would all but cease. It has been found that the hand scan works well in the college gym. Before this machine was used, students at the college entered the gym using cards similar to credit cards. The problem was that students often lost or forgot their cards. With the hand-scanning machine, however, the problem was solved right away. But the machines are still new, and there can be problems. For example, voice recognition works on the phone, but it is not precise, and can be tricked. Another constraint(限制)we notice, with machines that use face recognition in particular, is that they can be fooled if people color their hair or gain a lot of weight. However, this particular problem may be solved by a new type of technology that scans a persons iris, the colored part of the eye. It can even identify the person from a few feet away, recognizing a customer as he or she approaches the ATM.54. Whats the authors intention by presenting two examples in Paragraph 1?A. To bring in the topic of the passage.B. To stress how smart machines work.C. To show the popularity of smart machines.D. To introduce the convenience smart machines offer.55. What is the authors attitude towards the new technology? A. Bitter. B. Worried. C. Satisfied. D. Optimistic.56. What is the passage mainly about?A. An introduction to biometric machines.B. An advertisement for biometric machines.C. A brief description of hand scanning machines.D. An analysis of biometric machines value in economy.(C)Many of us remember being in awe(敬畏) when we saw cloned dinosaurs running wild in the film Jurassic Park. And the idea of using technology to revive(恢复) extinct species has long fascinated not only writers and directors, but scientists as well.According to The Telegraph, woolly mammoths(长毛猛犸象), which featured in the popular Ice Age animated movie series, “may walk the earth once more” now that scientists have taken another step toward realizing a long-held dreamrecreating their DNA. Mammoths became extinct around 10,000 years ago. However, since the discovery of near-perfect preserved remains in Arctic permafrost(北极冻土带) in May xx, a variety of research studies have been carried out since.Geneticists from Harvard University analyzed DNA from the remains, looking for genes which separated mammoths from elephants, such as hairiness and ear size. They then used the results to reproduce exact copies of 14 mammoth genes. “It is the first time that mammoth genes have been alivealthough so far it has only been done in the lab,” George Church, lead researcher of the project, told the Sunday Times.Church then used a new technique which allows scientists to edit DNA carefully, replacing sections of elephant DNA with the mammoth genes. So “we now have functioning elephant cells with mammoth DNA in them,” he said. However, Church ruled out the possibility of bringing the mammoths back to life via cloning from frozen remains. He said he “preferred to focus on rebuilding the full mammoth genome(基因组) by analyzing DNA from preserved remains and putting it into the cells of its closest living relative the Asian elephant,” reported The Telegraph.Church argued that the return of the woolly mammothor rather, the return of something very similarcould help bring back fragile(脆弱的) ecosystems. However, some scientists believe that bringing back the mammoth would be unethical.Professor Alex Greenwood, an expert on ancient DNA, said: “We may face the extinction of African and Asian elephants. Why bring back another elephant from extinction when we cannot even keep the ones that are not extinct around?” he told the Sunday Times. “What is the message? We can be as irresponsible with the environment as we want. Then well just clone things back?”“Money would be better spent focusing on conserving what we do have than spending it on an animal that has been extinct for thousands of years,” he said.57. We can learn from the article that _.A. cloned mammoths followed cloned dinosaurs to get revivedB. George Church and his colleagues tried to reproduce mammoth DNA C. the technology to revive mammoth genes is already matureD. Church and his team managed to list all the genes that separate mammoths from elephants58. According to Church, what is the significance of his study?A. It could help prevent the extinction of the Asian elephant.B. It could help people better tell elephant DNA from mammoth genes.C. It could help bring back some extinct species and save fragile ecosystems.D. It could help bring mammoths back to life via cloning from frozen remains.59. The underlined word “unethical” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to _.A. impractical B. misled C. unacceptable D. illegal60. According to the article, Professor Alex Greenwood believes that _.A. the return of the woolly mammoth would help to balance ecosystemsB. its more important to protect present species than to bring back extinct onesC. there is no need to worry about the extinction of African and Asian elephants at presentD. its necessary to bring back species that are beneficial to human beings from extinction(D)My grandmother Rosalind Einhorn was born exactly fifty-two years before I was, on August 28, 1917. Like many poor Jewish families in New York City, hers lived in a small, crowded apartment close to their relatives. Her parents, aunts and uncles addressed her male cousins by their given names, but she and her sister were referred to only as “Girlie”.During the Depression, my grandmother was pulled out of Morris High School to help support the household by sewing fabric flowers onto undergarments that her mother could resell for a tiny profit. No one in the munity would have considered taking a boy out of school. A boys education was the familys hope to move up the financial and social ladder. Education for girls, however, was less significant both financially, since they were unlikely to contribute to the familys ine, and culturally, since boys were expected to study the Torah while girls were expected to run a “proper home”. Luckily for my grandmother, a local teacher insisted that her parents put her back into school. She went on not only to finish high school but to graduate from U.C. Berkeley. After college, “Girlie” worked selling pocketbooks and accessories at Davids Fifth Avenue. When she left her job to marry my grandfather, Davids had to hire four people to replace her. Years later, when my grandfathers paint business was struggling, she jumped in and took some of the hard steps he was unwilling to take, helping to save the family from financial ruin. She displayed her business ability again in her forties. After being
