Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over(辛苦做得), hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?” Quickly, I flashed back(回想) to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington, whose name I had never heard of before. As I searched the name, it became evident(明显的) that there were two people having the same name who looked pletely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Headsthe mander, and tails(反面)the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver. Weeks later, standing before my classmates, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington? Obviously, my grade was terrible. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I smiled when the headmaster informed me of my choice to skip (跳过) the sixth grade. Justice(公平)is sweet! 21.Whywastheauthorconfusedaboutthetask?A.HewasunfamiliarwithAmericanhistory. B.Hefollowedtheadviceandflippedacoin.C.Heforgothisteachersinstruction. D.Hedidntknowwhytheteachergavesuchatask.22.Theunderlinedword“burning”inPara.3probablymeans_.A.excitedB.ashamed C.readyD.eager 23.Intheend,theauthorturnedthingsaround_.A.byredoinghistask B.throughhisowneffortsC.withthehelpofhisgrandfather D.undertheguidanceofhisheadmasterB How would you like to learn more without having to study more? Heres how:1. Get to bed and go to sleep. Your performance, attention, and the ability to concentrate are damaged by lack of sleep. Teenagers need nine to 10 hours of sleep a night for best performance.2. Feed you head. The brain runs badly if it doesnt get enough fuel. That means protein(蛋白质)and plex carbs(复合碳水化合物)eggs and wheat bread for breakfast, say, rather than sugary cereal(含糖的麦片粥) and orange juice. The biggest mistake teens make is not to have breakfast or to go for sugar, which raises blood sugar levels.3. Body exercise is brain exercise. Body exercise really improves brain performance, perhaps because it increases blood flow, or perhaps because it reduces stress and anxiety. Twenty minutes of activity a day that raises your heart rate will do great good.4. Learn now what you want to remember for the rest of your life. Teenage brains are much better at remembering things than the brains of young children or adults. Scientists arent sure why. Whatever the reason, the teenage years are the time to learn new languages and master other lifelong skills.5. Learn the power of risk-taking. Adults are always worried about the downside of teenage risk-taking, and its true that teenagers are more likely than adults to get themselves in trouble by drinking and driving. But the fact that the parts of the brain that drive people to try new, risky, and exciting things appear to be more developed in teenagers can be a huge advantage. Pick certain challengersdifficult sports, a hard job. Mastering a performance art, traveling overseas and the teenage brain is able to deal with them. They have this power theyre given to go out and do it without fear. 6. Learn what you love. Because emotional(情感的) systems develop fast in teenager brains, teenagers learn things theyre interested in quickly and well. Their brains give them tools like attention on the project.24. According to the passage, teenagers should have _ for breakfast. A. sugar and bread B. sugar and orange juice C. wheat bread and eggs D. wheat bread and orange juice25. Body exercise plays a part in all the following EXCEPT_. A. reducing blood pressure B. raising heart rate C. making people less anxious D. reducing stress26. The spelling of English has always been a problem but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. Then people could spell words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasnt made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries: Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries. For them, it wasnt only a job; it was a wonderful journey of discovery. The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter it felt like a barn, he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five oclock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening. Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, including his two daughters. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the reading?A. People didnt know how to spell words in the days before a dictionary.B. Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray did all the work on dictionaries.C. Collecting words for the dictionary is an easy job.D. Oxford University decided to edit its new dictionary in 1879.29. The largest dictionary in the world is the most popular one.D. An English dictionary like the kind we use today wasnt made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty.DMy teacher, Mr.August J.Bachmann, was the most influential teacher I ever had.I had gotten into trouble in his class: Another student had pushed me for fun, and I became angry and began to hit him. Mr.Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office, he sat me down and asked a simple question, “Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why arent you going to college?”I didnt know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch, he stayed and explained possible education options to me. At the end of our talk, he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City, New Jersey.Well,55 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me? I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of mand from teacher to principal(校长).Ive sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations. Ive won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me? It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children, it is because of him. If I have been a successful educator, it is because I had a great role model in Mr.Bachmann.32.
