选修7U19一、阅读理解AIt may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, dont worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesnt really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther Kings famous speech I Have a Dream, you may notice that he stumbles (结巴)over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you dont remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of munication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating petition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speakers ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speakers attractiveness by making him more human. As you work on your speech, dont worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will .A.be smarter than youB. know what you are talking aboutC.do better than youD. notice your mistakes2.You dont remember obvious mistakes in a speech because .A. you find the way of speech-making more importantB. you dont fully understand the speechC. you dont know what the speaker plans to sayD. your attention is on the content3.From the last two paragraphs, the author means that .A. giving a speech is like giving a performanceB. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is madeC.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad。D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be4.What would be the best title for the passage?A. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer psychological first aid and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadnt really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friends mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didnt want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, Just go. Just be there. I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. He built shelters for them.B. He gave immediate first aid to them.C. He came to stay with them.D. Free to be hunted and killed, free to die of hunger or thirst? Maybe sitting in a cage eating bananas isnt so bad.Not that such conditions are acceptable in modern zoos, due to the work of BIAZA,the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. These days every zoo requires BIAZAs approval to operate, and the association sets the standards, observes conditions in zoos and develops animalresearch programmes, both in the UK and abroad.BIAZA also organises the animal exchanges between zoos all over the world.Consequently, today, most zoo animals are born and raised in zoos, live in large, fortable enclosures and are cared for by welltrained, knowledgeable and caring zoo employees.Of course its no substitute for living in the wild but unfortunately this isnt always possible.Meanwhile, why not visit your local zoo and decide for yourself?【解题导语】本文主要讲述了现代的动物园是如何得到改善的。1The passage is mainly about_Ahow zoos have improvedBwhether a zoo should be closed downCa new environmental organisationDthe difference between zoos and be.分析:本句是一个复合句。if引导条件状语从句;how引导宾语从句。译文:如果你很少(花大量的时间)独处过,(那么)你可能会吃惊(地发现)独自旅行是多么令人愉悦。1G根据上文的“It can be challenging to talk over a trip and time away from work with another busy person in your solo trip can be a powerful and lifechanging experience”,并与本段主题句“Youre your own great pany”呼应可推知,自己一个人出去旅行,与自己做伴是很棒的体验,故选C项。3F根据上文的“Imagine sitting on a peaceful beach at sunset or taking an inviting morning hike alone”可推知,空处应是进一步说明独自远足的好处,所以选F项。4E根据下文的“You could even join a group of likeminded people for yoga on the beach”,并与本段主题句“Meet new people”呼应可推知,在独自旅途中可以和有趣的人聊天,结交新朋友,所以选E项。5A根据下文的“For some reason, service at hotels and restaurants seems better when youre traveling alone”可推知,本段主要讲的是旅途中会有好的服务,所以选A项。
