Wouldnt it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of municating in a different language? In a recent article from The Wall Street Journal, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within a decade or so, well be able to municate with one another via small earpieces with builtin microphones. Thats because technological progress is extremely rapid. Its only a matter of time. Indeed, some parents are so convinced that this technology is imminent that theyre wondering if their kids should even learn a second language. Its true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into puters will make them cleverer at translating “No es bueno dormir mucho” as “Its not good to sleep too much”. Replacing a word with its equivalent(对应词) in the target language is actually the “easy part” of a translators job.But even this seems to be a discouraging task for puters. Its so difficult for puters because translation doesnt or shouldntinvolve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, its about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time.Think about all the related clues that go into understanding an expression: volume, gesture, situation, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use. Therefore ,we should be very skeptical of a machine that is unable to interpret the world around us. If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better? Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a puter, undoubtedly when it es to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.【解题导语】技术专家说随着技术的进步,即时翻译机器将在大约十年内出现在市场上。 1What does the underlined word “imminent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?AReady.BApproaching.CHelpful. DAdvanced.B解析:词义猜测题。 2Why is it hard for puters to replace a word with its equivalent?ATheir data is not adequate enough.BThe real meaning of words can vary.CTheir accuracy needs big improvement.DA soul hasnt been breathed in them.B解析:细节理解题。根据第四段的“Its so difficult for puters because translation doesntor shouldnt . paragraphs.” 3What view does the author hold about translation?AProper translation can be tough for humans.BSlight distinctions matter little in translation.CSome machines will interpret our world properly.DCultures deserve more attention than words used.A解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段的“If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it,how can we expect a machine to do better?” 4What is the best title for the text?AAn Experts Precise PredictionBThe plexity of TranslationCWho Will Be a Better Translator?DWill Language Barrier Actually Fall?D解析:标题归纳题。 In Britain someone who helps children cross the street _1_ (call)“lollipop person”, because their sign looks like a lollipop (棒棒糖)The job of a lollipop person is to walk to the middle of the road at a(n) _2_ (suit) time, holding up the sign.
