Warming-up1. Let the students find out the sentences which contain modal verbs in the text, for example:1) Can you get me a packet of electricity, please?2) You cant buy electricity in packets like sweets!3) May I have my packet of electricity?4) When you look at a picture, your brain holds the picture for one-tenth of a second, then you must look again.Step2. 1. Let the students translate the following modal verbs: 1). can 能、会、能够 2). can not = cant 不能3). cant be 不可能是4). may 可以5). may be 也许是 6). may not 可以不7). must 必须8). must be 一定是9). must not = mustnt 禁止，不许10). need not = neednt 不必要2. Finish exercises of A1, B and C, then checking the answers together.Step3. 1. Explain how to use the modal verbs:can: a 表示能力, 中文意思是“_能; 会 ”，相当于 _be able to 。b.表示许可，中文意思是“_ 可以 _”, 相当于 may 。 c.表示可能性，cant中文意思是“_ 不可能_ ”。d. can 的否定形式是_ cant_。过去式_ could_的语气比can更加客气委婉，表示语气时并不代表过去时。may: a.表示允许, 中文意思是“_可以_”相当于_ can/could_ 。b.表示猜测，暗含的可能性较小, 中文意思是“_也许_”。c. may 的否定式为_may not_. 注意may的否定式不能缩写。且由may构成的一般疑问句的否定回答用_cant或 mustnt _,而不用may not。must: a.表示义务，中文意思是“_ _必须_”。 b. mustnt的中文意思是“_ _禁止_”。c. 表推测，暗含有很大的可能性,用于肯定句，中文 意思是“_一定是_”。d. 注意：由must构成的一般疑问句的否定回答要用 neednt_或_dont have to do_, 而不用mustnt。f. must 与have to 的区别，must表示主观看法，have to表示客观需求，中文意思为_不得不_。Step4.
