These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you pletely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, an expert in human-puter inter-action, it is a bination of the two. We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype(网络电话软件), he told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasnt until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of garbage in garbage out”. Mr. Brown says this is a mon human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that its going to the wrong place. ”Barry Brown once worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in peoples cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS”. It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS mands are given. Barry Brown says, “To make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together. ”56. In Paragraph 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to. A. build up his own reputationB. laugh at his stupid friendC. prove the GPS system is only garbageD. describe an example of human error57. What is the disadvantage of small screens in GPS equipment according to the text? A. They just provide the next turn. B. They are harmful to eyes. C. They make drivers tired easily. D. They often break down suddenly. 58. With which of the following statements would Barry Brown most likely agree? A. GPS units are to blame for most GPS service failures. B. We should introduce higher standards for the driving license. C. Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems. D. Drivers, GPS systems and passengers should unite to improve GPS systems. 59. What would be the best title for the text? A. Driving with GPS can be difficult. B. Driving confusions can be caused by small screens. C. Driving without GPS should be much more convenient. BPlanning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs. To support these worthy causes, Ashoka provides money for the worlds most promising change makers seeking to solve (解决) urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a change maker .Drayton believes that anyone can bee an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it. The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, contributing adult. In fact It is many young peoples ambition to set up programs or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city ,helped local farmers and provided an ine for poor people there .When Masqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhakas streets, Attracting tats and disease , they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste . So they educated the poor people in the city to post (把制成堆粪)this waste . They knew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical fertilizers (化肥) which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years . At first , they were refused ,but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made , the project took off. In xx sales were $14,000.Drayton is optimistic that in ten years Ashoka will be making really serious ,practical progress in bringing about social change by changing the way we look at economic development.63. Positive C. cautious D. forgiving DIn 1974, after filling out fifty applications, gone through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get-a teaching job at what considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen-teaching English.School started, but I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. Was this area rural area really New Jersey? My students took a week off when hunting season began. I was told they were also frequently absent in late. October to help their fathers make hay on the farms. I was a young woman from New York City, who thought that “Make hay while the sun shines” just meant to have a good time. But, still, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class-seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature e alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me , the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise. My boss sat in the back of the room. The boy in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girl filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasnt happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying , but at my next free period I had to face him. I wondered if he would let me finish out the day. I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door.He was sitting in his chair, and he looked at me long and hard. I said nothing. All I could think of was that I was not an English teacher; I had been lying to myself, pretending that everything was fine. When he spoke, he said simply, without accusation, “You had nothing to say to them.”“You had nothing to say to them ,” he repeated. “No wonder theyre bored. Why get the meat of the literature and stop talking about symbolism. Talk with them, not at them. And more important, why do you ignore their bad behavior?” We talked. He named my problems and offered solutions. We role-played. He was the bad student, and I was the forceful, yet, warm, teacher. As the year progressed, we spent many hours discussing literature and ideas about human beings, he helped me identify my weaknesses and my strengths. In short, he made me the reality of Emersons words: “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil.”Fifteen years later I still drive that same winding road to the same school. Thanks to the help I received that difficult first year, the school is my home now.66. It can be inferred from the story that in 1974_A. the writer became an optimistic personB. the writer was very happy about her new jobC. it was rather difficult to get a job in the USAD. it was easy to get a teaching job in New Jersey67. What is the writers biggest worry after her taskmasters observation of her class?A. She might lose her teaching job B. She might lose her students respect C. She couldnt teach the same class any more D. She couldnt ignore her students bad behavior any more 69. Which of the following gives the writer a sense of mild victory?A. Her talk about symbolism abounded convincing B. Her students behaved a little better than usual C. She managed to finish the class without crying D. She was invited for a talk by her boss after class70. The students behaved badly in the writers classes because_A. they were eager to embarrass her B. she didnt really understand them C. they didnt regard her as a good teacherD. she didnt have a good mand of English 第五部分:任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。Many people believe that classical music has nothing to do with young people today.
