Mr Williams, who was always a very careful driver, was driving home from work one evening when he came to a crossroads. It had a “SLOW” sign. He slowed down when he came to the main road, looked both ways to see that nothing was ing, and then drove across without stopping pletely. At once he heard a police whistle(口哨声), so he pulled into the side of the road and stopped. A policeman walked over to him with a notebook and a pen in his hand and said, “You didnt stop at that crossing.”“But the sign there doesnt saySTOP,”answered Mr Williams,“it just saysSLOW, and I did go slow.”The policeman looked around him, and a look of surprise came over his face. My father was a factory worker, and my mother stayed at home. Each year my father would dress up as Santa Claus and go through the streets of the projects sharing joy and candies with the children there. He loved it as much as they did!But around the Christmas in 1970, my father was out of his job and money was tight. In fact, there was no money for Christmas and my parents werent sure what theyd provide for us.That Christmas Eve, however, as usual, my father left the house dressed as Santa Claus. He knew that even though our Christmas would be hard, he could not disappoint the other kids in the neighbourhood. As my father left the house and went down the walkway, Santa Claus was walking up, with a great sack full of gifts for us! He said nothing, only smiled a sweet smile at my father, and wished him a Merry Christmas. The happy man handed Dad the sack and walked away down the block. We never knew who the man was and who showed us great kindness on a snowy Christmas night. We do know, however, that without him we would have had nothing under the tree. The people who do drugs might not even realize that what theyre doing has changed the lives of not only themselves, but of the people close to them in their lives.People on drugs have usually bee addicted because of the fact that theyve used drugs for years and have always used drugs to deal with their problems. Finally, they have no other way to deal with their problems and use other drugs to eliminate the feelings caused by other life problems. There are several ways to get rid of(摆脱) drug addiction. The first step, as Im sure you have heard hundreds of times, is to realize that theres a problem. If someone in your life has been doing drugs, youll need to let him/her know that its hurting more than just him/her.Once youve got him/her to realize this, if possible, youll need to find help for him/her. Youll need a way to work out the problems in life that drag(拉) him/her towards drugs, or to create something else that will keep him/her away from drugs.Sometimes other addictions are in line. For example, most heavy drinkers suffer from depression(抑郁症)Over 40% of Americans suffer from depression, and over 60% of the male population of these people have turned towards drinking to deal with their problems connected with depression. This greatly increases the chances of spousal(配偶的) and child abuse(虐待),as well as many other horrible effects of alcohol. When someone bees addicted to drugs, you need to deal with it immediately. Help him get rid of the problem before it turns into one that cannot be controlled.9. The passage is mainly about_A. why Americans suffer from depression and how to help them get over itB. the family life of those who take drugsC. the bad effects of taking drugs and how to help a drug addictD. the number one destroyer of peoples lives10. Tell him/her its harmful.B. Try to know about his/her family.C. Take drugs away from him/her.D. Do what you are interested in. DIt seems that great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems. Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius are linked(联系)Dr Adele Juda studied 5,000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population. Poets had the highest rate(比例) of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects.Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it.Dr Ruth Richards of Harvard University_made_a_breakthrough. Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric(精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group. Also, the patients close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes(基因)But this is a problem. According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution(进化) has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.12. According to Dr Adele Juda, which of the following group has the lowest rate of mental illness?A. Painters.B. Musicians.C. Poets.D. Bus drivers.13. The underlined phrase “made a breakthrough” in the fourth paragraph means “_”A. discovered or found something new and importantB. made a way through using forceC. Among the 5,000 creative people in Germany, more people suffer from mental diseases than the general population.B. There is a strong link between mental problems and creativity.C. Psychiatric patients make greater contributions than mon people.D. The key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes.15. What is the writers attitude towards madness?A. Madness is harmful to the whole society.B. A little creative madness is good for us all.C. All the talented people are mad.D. Only the people with mental illness have more creativity.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Once there was a very poor villager.
