Where should you go if you want to get rid of your tiredness?A. To a fountain. B. To some stores. C. To a hotspot D. To a snowy field B The loudest public food fight right now is bout GMOs (转基因生物), or genetically modified organisms. Scientists add genes to corn, soybeans, and other plants, usually to protect the crops from insects or herbicides. Proponents say that makes crops easier to grow and cheaper while opponents believe that GMOs have been linked to depression, allergies, infertility, and even cancer. Many consumers and food-safety inspectors worry that GMOs cause an unnatural threat to health and the environment. Although GMOs have been in our food supply for 20 years, the controversy has moved to center stage. recent documentaries and experts on The Doctor Oz Show have fanned the flames. About 75 percent of consumers say they are concerned about the safety of genetically modified foods. Two states in the USA recently passed bills requiring labeling of all food made with GMOs; many other states are considering mandatory labeling. The European Union already requires labeling, and several countries, including France, have banned the planting of genetically modified crops. So are GMOs safe- of should you avoid them at all costs? Here, a look the evidence. Roughly 90% of the corn, canola, soybeans, and sugar beets grown in the United States have bits of DNA that originally came from a lab. Unless youve been eating only food labeled 100percent organic - which must be GMO-free - you probably have GMOs in your system now. In a big red-flag-raising study, French researchers for two years. “Genetics engineering can have unintended consequences.” Says Bill Freese, science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety. Artificial genes force plants produce unnatural proteins, he says, and no one knows how those may affect human health. But scientists immediately criticized the French study. For on thing, types of rats used in the study were highly prone(倾向于) to cancer, so it was predictable that some would develop tumors after eating GMOs, notes Nina Fedoroff, a professor of biology and life sciences at Penn State University. She adds, “Weve eaten these foods for 20 years and arent walking around with giant tumors.” Hundreds of other studies have found no trouble with GMOs, says Ruth MacDoaldm, professor at Iowa State University. After looking at more than 130 research projects, the EU concluded that there is nothing especially risky about them. In September, the editors of Scientific American denounced the efforts to label GMOs foods, stating that theres no proof that GMOs can endanger peoples health. Adding genes to crops isnt any more dangerous than traditional breeding, which farmers have done for thousands of years, the American Association for the Advancement of Science declared in xx. old methods of modifying crops mixed tens of thousands of genes with unpredictable results. The fact that scientists can now insert single genes into corn or soybeans shouldnt raise any new alarms, says Fedoroff. There doesnt appear to be a scientific reason to ban GMO foods from your cupboard to protect your health. But it is healthy to limit your intake of the processed foods that often contain them. And dont assume that GMO-free packaged good is necessarily healthy. Organic cookies can still contain too much sugar or salt.4. Which of the following have made the argument about GMOs fiercer?A. Some consumers and inspectors. B. Some documentaries and experts.C. Some newspapers and magazines. D. Some scientists and administrators.5. But thats just scratching the surface. Hes also helped remove 218 washing machines, 19 tractors, 12 hot tubs, four pianos and almost 1,000 refrigerators. For Pregracke, removing this debris - pieces of wood, metal, brick, etc. -has bee his lifes work. Sometimes called “The Rivers Garbageman”, he lives on a barge(驳船) about nine months out of the year with members of his 12-person crew. Together, they organize munity cleanups along rivers across the country. Its a dirty job, but Pregrack took it on because he realized that no one was doing it. It began as a solo(独自的) effort, and over the years his energy and enthusiasm have helped it grow. To date, about 70,000 volunteers have joined him, helping collect more than 7 million pounds of debris through his non-profit. Pregracke grew up in East Moline, Illinois, where the Mississippi River was in his backyard. As a teenager, he worked as mercial shell diver and began to notice the heaps of debris in the waterway - one that supplies drinking water to 18 million people in more than 50 US cities. “I saw thousands of barrels, thousands of tires, cars, trucks and tops of school buses I got sick of seeing it and by himself. He would transport the trash out of the water.” Pregracke got a small fund from a pany in 1997 and spent that summer cleaning a 35-mile stretch of the river by himself. He would transport the trash by boat and sort it on his parents lawn to be recycles. By years end, he had single-handedly pulled around 45,000 pounds of trash out of the water. His non-profit now has a fleet of boats. And while he has resources and know-how, he depends on each munity he visits to supply the manpower needed to get the job done. At the cleanup sites, Pregracke humor creates cheerful atmosphere - something he knows is necessary for the work that they do. His team uses motivational speeches and music to get the volunteers amped up(陶醉). “We do everything in our power to get people excited about it,” Pregracke said. “We want people to leave feeling good about what they did so theyll contribute more here.” Pregracke views his work as a different kind of service to the country. “A lot of people call me a conservationist or an environmentalist, but the thing is Im no different than anybody else,” he said. Ultimately, Pregracke believes his story is proof that anyone can make a difference: “If I had one thing to say, it wouldnt even be about rivers necessarily. It would be about finding a cause thats dear to you and taking action.”8.What initially caused Pregracke to clean up the waterway? A. Peoples ignorance of debris at the bottom of the river. B. His ambition to bee famous throughout the country. C. Safety problems of sailing boats along the Mississippi. D. His bad feeling about the source of the drinking water.9. What can we learn about Precracke from the passage? A. He maintains his cause with the help from society. B. He aims at recycling what have been found in rivers. C. He makes a living by cleaning waterways all over the country. D. He thinks of himself as a conservationist or environmentalist.10. Why does Pregracke try to create a cheerful atmosphere at the cleanup site? A. To make the heavy job lighter. B. To attract the volunteers back. C. To increase efficiency in the job. D. To get the participants motivated.11. Through his efforts, Pregracke wants to display _. A. his love for waterways B. his value to society C. his attitude to environment D. his capacity for workingII.任务型阅读Throw the bottles and boxes of drugs out of your house. A new theory suggests that medicine could be bad for your health, which should at least e as good news to people who cannot afford to buy expensive medicine. This new theory argues that healing is at our fingertips: we can be healthy by doing Yoga on a regular basis.Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trusted since it is effective and scientifically proven. They say that there is no need for spiritual methods such as Yoga. These waste our time, something which is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that can kill our pain, x-rays that show us our bones or MRI that scans our brain for tumors (肿瘤).We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples that they provide. However, there are some “everyday plaints” such as back pains, headaches, insomnia, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin; when you cannot sleep, you take Xanax without thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long period, you bee addicted to them; you cannot sleep without them. We pay huge amounts of money and bee addicted instead of getting better. How about a safer and more economical way of healing? When doing Yoga, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very economical. Its popularity has spread particularly throughout America and Western Europe. In quantum (量子) physics, energy is recognized as the fundamental substance (物质) which the universe consists of. Yoga depends on the energy within our bodies. It is a simple and effective way of restoring the energy flow. There are no side effects and it is scientifically explained. Opponents of alternative healing methods also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Yoga make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair because of chemotherapy (化疗), losing weight because of the side effects of the medicine they take. Actually, it is mon knowledge that except for when the cancer is recognized at an early stage, drugs also cannot treat AIDS or cancer. Most of the medicines these patients use are to ease their pain and their sufferings. Instead of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overe the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday worries. We should definitely start learning Yoga and avoid illnesses before it is too late.
