Your brain is processing the information even if you are not aware that you are actually learning. It is a simple concept, really. A newborn can not know what anyone is saying or write down what he hears, but through repetition of the same sound, he can learn a language. Actually we all learn our first language by this listening approach. There is no one to really translate anything to us. You probably did have parents who pointed at things and would pronounce them to you, but they did not sit down to teach your grammar rules. All these are the methods often used to learn a new language at school; it is very difficult for us to accept a new way of learning. That is not to say that you should not use vocabulary word list to help you learn. You just need to supply this learning by passive listening. Thanks to the article I read by chance in the newspaper, I started to listen to English radio broadcasts every day. As first I took no notice of it, because I had no idea what was being said. But I soon realize that I could understand words, even though I could not understand everything that was being said. My ears began to “pick out” words that I recognized. I no longer picked up other programs. In six months, I have a vocabulary of about 1,000 English words. Now you can see the more exposure you have to the language you are trying to learn, the easier it is going to learn it.21. What can we learn from the passage?A. Listening is the main way for newborns to learn a language.B. More and more students begin to do much listening practice at school.C. The writer used to listen to English programs carefully every day.D. We should know the new words ahead of time before learning a foreign language through listening.22. How did the writer get the idea of improving his English through listening?A. he knew it from his teacher.B. He heard it from the radio.C. He got it by watching newborns learn to speak.D. He learned about it through the newspaper.23. When the writer first listen to English programs he _.A. could not follow the speaker.B. showed much interest in them.C. tried to pick out the words he could understand.D. found he could increase his vocabulary very quickly.24. How did the writer get his idea across?A. with facts and theories.B. with figures and explanationsC. with parisons and personal experiences.D. with stories and arguments BBoth my parents came from towns in Mexico. Then I was born in El Paso, Texas, and when I was four, my family moved to a housing project in East Los Angeles. Even though we struggled to make ends meet, my parents stressed to me and myfour brothers and sisters how fortunate we were to live in a great country with limitless opportunities. They influenced us with the concepts of family, faith and nationalism. I got my first real job when I was ten. My dad injured his back working in a cardboardbox factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little shopping mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr. Bens Coiffure. The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m. To pick up rubbish, Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower. Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter by hand. It took two to three hours to clean the lot. Id sleep in the car on the way home. I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime I acquireddiscipline and a strong work ethic (道德), and learned at an early age the importance of balancing lifes peting interestsin my case, school, homework and a job. This really helped during my senior year of a high school, when I worked 40 hours a week flipping burgers at a fast-food joint while taking a full load of college preparation courses. The hard work paid off. I attended the US Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degrees in law and business from Harvard. Later, I joined a big Los Angeles law firm and was elected to the California State Assembly (州议会). In these jobs andin everything else Ive done, I have never forgotten those nights in the parking lot. The experience taught me that there is dignity in all work and that if people are working to provide for themselves and their families that is something we should honor.25. Before my father got injured,we _.A. didnt like living in the USA B. rented space in a shopping mallC. had many ways to make moneyD. lived a poor but happy life26. When he recovered,to make a living my father _.A. ran a small shopping mall B. did a part-time job C. worked as a barber D. became a street cleaner27. The author tells us in the last paragraph that we should be proud of those who _.A. have done all kinds of jobs B. are cleaning the parking lotC. have achieved a lot in their lives D. are taking their responsibilities CThe Summer Camp xx program mixes Chinese language teaching with a choice of culture and activities, to create a fun-packed holiday and your children will enjoy it. Professor Pan! Were friends.” “Id rather pay.” I replied. “If its free I cant afford it!”Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, “Were friends now!” But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them into an American university, and I wish Id have just paid the 30 Yuan. I owed (欠) them in the first place!According to the American “Theres no free lunch”, theres a price for everything, and Im always looking around to figure out what this means. Many of our neighbors have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him. “Wait until you have something major to fix!” he insists.I mentioned to a peasant friend that I wished I had a stone mill(磨) to grind flour for bread. A month later he showed up with a beautiful mill that hed had his uncle in the countryside carve from a solid block of granite(花岗岩).Chinese generosity is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements(纠缠) and just hand over the money. But cash cant pensate (补偿) for the greatest gift friendship. When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo chairs under the trees, drinking tea, he said, “They must have nothing better to do.” “Actually,” I said, “they are professors, with plenty to do. But probably youre right in saying that, at this moment, they have nothing better to do. And neither do I!”And I joined the group. We talked about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived. One man said, “They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now theyre taller than you. How time flies!”How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know. They cannot keep. They freely give off their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching me, slowly, to both give and receive. So the next time someone says, “No charge. Were friends!” I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English. Ill make sure they tutor my son in Chinese as well, because theres still no free lunch.31.
