In addition, people have developed cultural patterns and technologies that help them adjust to extremes of temperature and humidity(湿度). In very cold climates, there is a constant danger of developing hypothermia(低体温), which is a life threatening drop in core body temperature to below normal levels. The normal temperature for humans is about 37.0C. However, differences in persons and even the time of day can cause it to be as much as 6C higher or lower in healthy individuals. It is also normal for core body temperature to be lower in elderly people. Hypothermia begins to occur when the core body temperature drops to 34.4C. Below 29.4C, the body cools more rapidly because its natural temperature regulating system usually fails. The rapid decline in core body temperature is likely to result in death. However, there have been rare cases in which people have been saved after their temperatures had dropped to 13.9-15.6C. This happened in 1999 to a Swedish woman who was trapped under an ice sheet in freezing water for 80 minutes. She was found unconscious, not breathing, and her heart had stopped beating, yet she was eventually saved despite the fact that her temperature had dropped to 13.7C. In extremely hot climates or as a result of uncontrollable infections, core body temperatures can rise to equally dangerous levels. This is hyperthermia. Life threatening hyperthermia typically starts in humans when their temperatures rise to 40.6-41.7C. Only a few days at this extraordinarily high temperature level is likely to result in the worsening of internal organs and death.21. Why can humans keep stable body temperatures in different seasons? A. Because their bodies are unusually efficient. B. Because they experience different climates. C. Because they can adjust to cultural patterns and technologies. D. Because they have internal temperature regulating systems.22. What does Paragraph Two mainly discuss? A. The dangerous effects of hypothermia. B. The change of body temperature. C. The survival of the Swedish woman. D. The regulating systems of natural temperature.23. What is the best title for the passage? A. Unbelievable Survival in an Ice Trap B. Getting to Know Hypothermia C. Humans Ability to Adjust Body TemperatureD. Changing Core Body TemperatureB On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley saved me. The previous afternoon, I played with my six-year-old peers in Heather Peters backyard. I was enjoying my cake, when Heather asked me where my sleeping bag was. Only then did I know this party was a sleepover. The word “sleep-over” to a six-year-old bed-wetter is like what “cancer” means to an adult. But what if I told them I was a bed-wetter? At least with cancer, people gather at your bedside instead of running from it. I thought of a way to escape. I would explain that I needed my mothers permission to spend the nights. But as I called my Mom, Heather stood beside me to listen. She granted permission! Then I would be sleeping in the same living room as the other girls. I didnt bring my own pajamas (睡衣),so Mrs. Peters offered me Heathers pajamas. As the other girls drifted into their sweet dreams, I tried to stay awake. “Do I need to go again? Ill stay up to go one more time.” Of course, I finally fell asleep. The next morning, I was the first to wake up. I was warm! I lay in panic for what seemed like hours before the other girls started to wake up. I did the only thing I could do - I pretended that the bed-wetting didnt happen. I got up, took off Heathers pajamas and changed into my clothes like the other girls. Mrs. Peters walked into the room, and before she could say anything, she stepped right onto the pile of my wet pajamas. My heart stopped as I watched her face burn red. “WHO DID THIS?” She screamed, with a look so frightening. Should I answer? And that was when it happened Mr. Peters came in and grabbed his wife, Elvis Presley died!” The news of the Kings death overtook Mrs. Peters, and I, was spared. Recent in-depth analyses of the songs sung by humpback whales show that, even when their organ would allow them to do otherwise, the animals converge on the same choices relating to sounds and beauty, and accept the same laws of song position as those preferred by human musicians, and human ears, everywhere. For example, male humpback whales, who spend six months of each year doing little else but singing, use rhythms (节奏) similar to those found in human music and musical phrases of similar length a few seconds. Whales are able to make sounds over a range of at least seven octaves (八度音阶), yet they tend to move on through a song in beautiful musical intervals, rather than moving forwards madly. They mix the sounds like drums and pure tones in a ratio (比例) which agrees with that heard in much western music. They also use a favorite technique of human singers, the so-called A-B-A form, in which a theme is stated, then developed, and then returned to in slightly revised form. Perhaps most impressive, humpback songs contain tunes that rhyme. This suggests that whales use rhyme in the same way we do: as a technique in poem to help them remember plex material, the researchers write.32. The underlined words converge on in Paragraph 3 probably means_.A. tend towards B. refer to C. turn into D. put forward33. But why is it so good? 36 Most teachers in Finland are professionals who have been selected from the top 10% of the nations graduates. In order to teach, they need a masters degree in education. Teachers also have a lot of respect and status in Finland. 37 They work closely with the university thats closest to their school. They also have fewer teaching hours than any other school system in the world, which gives them more time to reflect on their teaching methods. Teachers have a great deal of freedom. Even though theres a national curriculum that says what children should learn, all teachers are free to decide how and when they teach it. 38 Students spend fewer hours in school than pupils in other western countries. 39 This makes it easy for teachers to monitor students progress. There are also specialized assistants in the classroom to help the teacher. If a child is falling behind, the teaching staff create a plan to meet that childs personal needs. If a child is going really well, staff will pay attention to this too. 40 Clearly, a lot of factors determine how well students do in class. But Finland seems to have created the perfect system! A. Here are a few possible reasons. B. Class sizes are rarely over 20 students. C. The atmosphere at school is fairly relaxed. D. Teachers get continuous professional training. E.
