First theres self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something Im not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it , “Always be a first-class version of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”Then theres honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If youve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you cant to wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that: In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didnt do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. Id write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off. At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasnt thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldnt do that anymore, because I wasnt really helping them They werent learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasnt helping me. It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(储蓄)into your PBA and will build strength.21The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means “ ”.A. to be honest B. to be unreal C. to bee clear D. to e from an imagined world22Which of the following can best explain Judy Garlands words?A. Be your true self rather than follow others.B. Dont copy others or you cant be the first class.C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.D. Dont learn from others unless theyre excellent.23What does the author expect to show by Jeffs story?A. Honesty can be of great help.B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.24In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express .A. one must be brave to be honestB. its difficult to be honest when others are notC. one should be honest when making a depositD. honestly in ones actions can help him in the futureB Robinson Crusoe is a famous novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked (遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued. Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expedition in 1704, Selkirk had an argument with his ships captain. Selkirk thought the ship was not safe and was about to fall apart. When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water, Selkirk got off. He tried to get the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The shop then sailed away without him. Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on the island, known as Aguas Buenas. Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. The ships captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived. Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Selkirks camp on Aguas Buenas. They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships ing close to the island. The most interesting evidence, the archaeologists say, is part of a piece of equipment used by sailors to navigate (导航). Historians believe Selkirk was a navigator, so the instrument could have belonged to him. Robinson Crusoe was published ten years after Selkirk was rescued. Most experts think Daniel Defoe heard and read stories about Selkirk, which inspired him to write the book.25Why did Selkirk choose to land on the remote island?A. Because he had quarrels with the crew members.B. Because the captain ordered him to get fresh water.C. Because he wanted to go on an adventure there.D. Because he thought the ship he was on was in danger.26We can infer from the text that the ship that visited Aguas Buenas in 1709 _.A. lost its way while sailing B. lacked fresh water upon arrivalC. was being navigated by Selkirk D. was running out of food upon arrival27The author wrote the text to _.A. explain the origin of Robinson CrusoeB. promote sales to Robinson CrusoeC. criticise Alexander Selkriks deedsD. praise Daniel Defoe for his writing inspiration C Dogs already guide blind and disabled people and now they are to be trained to help people with dementia. The idea developed by some university students will now be put into practice by Scotland Medical Centre. The research is meaningful, for there are 670, 000 people in Britain who have dementia and by 2021 this is expected to rise to one million. Dementia can make people confuse day and night or forget basic things such as washing or drinking enough water. The dogs would be trained to help to guide them through the day. Joyce Gray from Scotland Medical Centre said, “People in the early stages of dementia are still able to live a ly normal life, and dogs help them to maintain routine. For example, people with memory loss will tend to forget to take medicine, but if a dog presents them with a bag with pills in it, theres a greater chance of them taking it.” Ms. Gray also said dogs were perfectly suited to remind their owners to eat. “Dogs have an ability to say its my feeding time, so there would be a note in the cupboard next to the dogs food reminding the dogs owner to eat too.” Dogs would also encourage their owners to take them out for walks. “It gives a reason for the owner to go out into the munity,” Ms. Gray said. “We did a test with an elderly person walking down the high street on his own. Then we gave him a dog on a lead and he did the exact same walk. That time people would e up to him, chatting, smiling or making eye contact. We hope wed see this with people with dementia too.” There is one more advantage of using the pets as panions. Since conversations can be increasingly confusing for people with dementia, dogs can give them a sense of silent support and panionship. Ms. Gray said, “We have found that people may forget familiar faces but not pets. People light up when they see animals. There is a speechless bond between the dog and its owner.”28Whats the best title for the passage?AGuide dogs for the mind. BPets, faithful panions.CMental support for the disabled. DDementia, a curable disease.29Whats the mon symptom of dementia?AGoing hungry. BFeeling lonely.C Waking up at night.
