Do you remember the night you almost took my fathers life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. Hes addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasnt the only one hurt by you that night. Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen pletely. “Im so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit(呕吐). “Im sorry,” they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This wont happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you. Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didnt realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And its all your fault.I wish youd walk out of my life forever. I dont want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain youve caused. Sure, youve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage youve caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring (引诱) in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please.Sincerely,Anonymous1. What is authors purpose in writing the passage?A. To introduce Mr. Alcohol to the readersB. To describe the harm alcohol did to his family.C. Registered dietitian(营养专家) Barhara Morrissey suggests that a few simple rules can help. “ Go for nutrient dense foods,” she suggests, “foods that contain a multiple of nutrients. For example, select whole wheat bread as a breakfast food, rather than coffee cake. Or drink orange juice rather than orange drink, which contains only a small percentage of real juice-the rest is largely colored sugar water. You just cant pare the value of these foods, the nutrient dense ones are so superior,” she emphasizes. Morrissey believes that variety is not only the spice of life-its the foundation of a healthful diet. Diets which are based on one or two foods are not only virtually impossible to keep up the strength, they can be very harmful, she says, because nutrients arent supplied in sufficient amounts or balance. According to Morrissey, trying to find a diet that can cure your illnesses, or make you superwoman is a fruitless search. As women, many of us are too concerned with staying thin, she says, and we believe that vitamins are some kind of magic cure to replace food. “We need carbohydrates, protein and fat they are like the wood in the fireplace. The vitamins and minerals are like the match, the spark, for the fuel,” she explains. “We need them all, but in a very different proportions. And if the fuel isnt there, the spark is useless.”5. Those with prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, can see perfectly well, but their brains are unable to piece together the information needed to understand that a collection of features represents an individuals face. The condition is a neurological(神经病学的)mystery, but new research has shed light on this strange disease. Some scientists had believed that faces and voices, the two main ways people recognize one another, were processed separately by the brain. Indeed, a condition parallel(平行的) to prosopagnosia, called phonagnosia, similarly leaves a person unable to distinguish a familiar voice from an unfamiliar one. But by testing for these two conditions at the same time, researchers at the Max Planck Institute recently found evidence that face and voice recognition may be linked in a unique person-recognition system. The scientists observed the brain activity of 19 healthy volunteers as they were led through tasks that tested their ability to recognize both faces and voices. The researchers found that regions of the brain, associated with facial recognition, are directly linked to regions responsible for voice recognition. This research helps explain why a person with prosopagnosia may still have difficulty determining who a person is even after he has begun to speak. The challenge for scientists is to find out where this system breaks down. Are these connections in the brain missing entirely, or are people unable to recognize faces and voices simply unable to use these links in some way? It is unclear how many people have these conditions. Many dont even realize they have problems with facial or voice recognition. While some develop these difficulties after a brain injury, others develop it in childhood. 11. James Cooke cant recognize other people because . A. his eyesight is failing B. he prefers to walk hurriedly C. he suffers from face blindnessD. he cant tell facial expressions12. Which of the following is true of prosopagnosia?A. It is a mon disease among adults.B. It may cause damage to the brain.C. It is always an inborn disease. D. There has been no cure for it. 13. According to the recently discovered evidence, .A. different regions of the brain have to work separatelyB. people with phonagnosia are good at facial recognition C. regions of the brain for personal recognition are connected D. person recognition is controlled by the same part of the brain15. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?A. The causes of the two diseases have been discovered recently.B. The scientists are quite satisfied with the evidence and findings.C. Some people have problems with both facial and voice recognition.D. A lot of patients have been assisted medically and psychologically. 第二部分:七选五(每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上写出答案。选项中有两项为多余选项。 _16_When a person does a certain thing again, he is impelled(迫使) by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly; thus a habit is formed. That sounds great! And I definitely agree with you on that. Some of the columns which you mentioned in the letter are really my cup of tea. Say, “culture express” gives us a better understanding of the world. Since people from different parts of the world have different values, its necessary to learn from each other. This will offer a wonderful chance. Apart from that, “blurt out” is pretty good for Chinese students to learn English idioms and improve oral English. Last but not least, “entertainment” is so cool! The popular singers, actors and celebrities are so catchy and attractive that you absolutely cant miss it! Teenagers are just fond of the trendy things.Well, I cant list more. I really cant wait to read that magazine! Yours faithfully, Li Hua
