Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or broken roofs. One person was killed, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller hurt. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm. A farmer,Mr.Tan, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour. “I was eating with my wife and children,”he said,“When we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but very frightened.” Mrs. Woo Mei Fong said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children.“There was no time to take anything.” she said,“A few minutes later, the roof came down.” Soldiers helped to take people out of the flooded area and the welfare department(福利机构)brought them food, clothes and shelter.【小题1】How many homes altogether were damaged in the storm? AFourteen.BTwentyone.CTwentynine.DThirtysix.【小题2】Where was Mr.Tan when the storm first began? AHe was in bed.BHe was inside the house.CHe was outside the house.DHe was on the roof.【小题3】Which of the following may be the best title for this passage? (xx全国,A)Doctors are known to be terrible pilots. They dont listen because they already know it all. I was lucky: I became a pilot in 1970, almost ten years before I graduated from medical school. I didnt realize then, but being a pilot makes me a better surgeon. I loved flying. As I flew bigger, faster planes, and in worse weather, I learned about crew resource management (机组资源管理), or CRM, a new idea to make flying safer. It means that crew members should listen and speak up for a good result, regardless of positions.I first read about CRM in 1980. Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot. He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear (起落架) down. He was a better pilotand my bossso it felt unusual to speak up. But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside my uneasiness and said, “We need to put the landing gear down now!” That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and Ive used it in the operating room ever since.CRM requires that the pilot/surgeon encourage others to speak up. It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesnt overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when Im in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others. Sometimes theyre not willing to speak up. But I hope that if I continue to encourage them, someday someone will keep me from“landing_gear_up”文章大意:众所周知,医生是糟糕的飞行员,但飞行使我成为好的医生。1What dose the author say about doctors in general?AThey like flying by themselves.BThey are unwilling to take advice.CThey pretend to be good pilots.DThey are quick learners of CRM. 2The author deepened his understanding of the power of CRM when _.Ahe saved the plane by speaking upBhe was in charge of a flying taskChis boss landed the plane too lateDhis boss operated on a patient答案:A推理判断题。 3In the last paragraph “landing gear up” probably means _.Afollowing flying requirementsBoverreacting to different opinionsClistening to what fellow doctors sayDmaking a mistake that may cost lives答案:D词义理解题。 4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?ACRM: A New Way to Make Flying Safe.BFlying Makes Me a Better Doctor.CThe Making of a Good Pilot.DA PilotTurned Doctor. (xx江苏,C)If a diver surfaces too quickly, he may suffer the bends. Nitrogen(氮) dissolved (溶解)in his blood is suddenly liberated by the reduction of pressure. The consequence, if the bubbles (气泡)accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent bodythus the name. If the bubbles form in his lungs or his brain, the consequence can be death. Other airbreathing animals also suffer this depression(减压)sickness if they surface too fast: whales, for example. And so, long ago, did ichthy osaurs (鱿). That these ancient sea animals got the bends can be seen from their bones. If bubbles of nitrogen form inside the bone they can cut off its blood supply. This kills the cells in the bone, and consequently weakens it, sometimes to the point of collapse. Fossil(化石)bones that have caved in on themselves are thus a sign that the animal once had the bends. Bruce Rothschild of the University of Kansas knew all this when he began a study of ichthyosaur bones to find out how widespread the problem was in the past. What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of depression over the 150 million years. To this end, he and his colleagues traveled the worlds naturalhistory museums, looking at hundreds of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic period and from the later Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. When he started, he assumed that signs of the bends would be rarer in younger fossils, reflecting their gradual evolution of measures to deal with depression. Instead, he was astonished to discover the opposite. More than 15% of Jurassic and Cretaceous ichthyosayurs had suffered the bends before they died, but not a single Triassic specimen(标本)showed evidence of that sort of injury. If ichthyosaurs did evolve an antidepression means, they clearly did so quicklyand, most strangely, they lost it afterwards. But that is not what Dr Rothschild thinks happened. He suspects it was evolution in other animals that caused the change. Whales that suffer the bends often do so because they have surfaced to escape a predator (捕食动物)such as a large shark. One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, both of which were fond of ichthyosaur lunches. Triassic oceans, by contrast, were mercifully sharkand crocodilefree. In the Triassic, then, ichthyosaurs were top of the food chain. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, they were prey(猎物)as well as predatorand often had to make a speedy exit as a result. 5Which of the following is a typical symptom of the bends?AA twisted body. BA gradual decrease in blood supply.CA sudden release of nitrogen in blood.DA drop in blood pressure. 根据第一段第二句话“The consequence, if the bubbles accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent bodythus the name”当血液中的氮气释放,聚集在关节处,结果就是剧烈的疼痛和身体的弯曲这就是bends这个名字的由来。 6The purpose of Rothschilds study is to see _.Ahow often ichthyosaurs caught the bendsBhow ichthyosaurs adapted to depression Cwhy ichthyosaurs bent their bodies Dwhen ichthyosaurs broke their bones 答案:B细节理解题。根据第三段第二句话“What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of depression over the 150 million years.” 7Rothschilds finding stated in Paragraph 4 _.Aconfirmed his assumption Bspeeded up his research process Cdisagreed with his assumption Dchanged his research objectives 答案:C推理判断题。根据根据第四段第二句话“Instead,he was astonished to discover the opposite.” 8Rothschild might have concluded that ichthyosaurs _.Afailed to evolve an antidepression means Bgradually developed measures against the bends Cdied out because of large sharks and crocodiles Devolved an antidepression means but soon lost it 答案:A推理判断题。 Decreasing grain prices along with growing costs of production means Chinese farmers are unlikely to see a significant rise in ine next year. Chinas economic planning chief Ma Kai expressed the concern as the government undertakes an ambitious program to improve rural peoples lives.Grain prices have been dropping since April; and prices of wheat, corn and rice fell 5 per cent from August to October pared with the same period last year, Ma, minister of the National Development and Reform mission, told an annual meeting on development and reform held over the weekend. Meanwhile, prices of production materials rose 9.1 per cent year on year during the first 10 months. The situation makes it difficult to achieve a “new socialist countryside,” which was last week highlighted(引起注意)as a new concept and “mon action” of the whole Party and nation. Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie also said Chinas entry to the World Trade Organization also creates hurdles for ine rises for the countrys 780 million farmers. Last year, per capita net ine(个人平均纯收入)of Chinese farmers reached 2,936 yuan (US$362), up 6.8 per cent year on year, and the highest increase since 1997.
