The species is considered one of the most adaptable in Australia, but new research shows that it spends less time underwater when temperatures increase, and that could put its survival in danger as heat records continue to be broken.Crocodiles dive for food, protection, socializing, and even a nap. They can typically stay underwater for 10 to 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes if they are trying to hide from a threat. On average, a crocodile spends around 11 hours a day under water. To see how climate change would affect Australias saltwater crocodiles, researchers at the University of Queensland studied young crocodiles in three pools heated to different temperatures. The first pool was set to the regions current summer water temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The second was set 6 degrees Fahrenheit higher what researchers expect water temperatures to average under moderate (适度的) climate change. They heated the third pool to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, what the region could see under a worstcaseclimate situation.Essie Rogers, the studys lead author and a Ph.D. student at the University of Queensland, quickly saw a change in the crocodiles behavior. “Acute increases in water temperature resulted in greatly shorter crocodile dives,” Rogers said in a statement. “Their underwater time halved with every 3.5degree Celsius increase in water temperature.”For Australias saltwater crocodiles, the changing temperatures could mean the animals might start searching for cooler waters, heading farther south than the species known range. Franklin said more testing needs to be conducted to get a better understanding of how climate change could affect crocodiles prey (捕食). “We are not sure what this means, but its likely that if the water is too hot, crocodiles might move to cooler regions or will seek shelter in deep, cool water pockets to defend their dive time,” Franklin said.1What do we learn about saltwater crocodiles in Australia?AThey are at the risk of dying out now.BThey are not sensitive to temperatures.CThey dont like spending time underwater.DThey are good at adapting to new environments.解析:选D细节理解题。根据第一段的“The species is considered one of the most adaptable in Australia”可知,这种鳄鱼适应新环境的能力强。2Under moderate climate change, the average summer water temperature can reach _.A82 degrees FahrenheitB88 degrees FahrenheitC92 degrees FahrenheitD95 degrees Fahrenheit解析:选B推理判断题。根据第三段的“The first pool was set . climate change.”可知,答案应选B项。3What Franklin said in the last paragraph shows that crocodiles _.Amay die out pretty soonBwill change their diving waysCwill get used to the climate changeDmay have to leave their current habitat解析:选D细节理解题。根据末段的“We are not sure .
