Diaz is a“cable racer”, and every morning he faces the difficult task of taking the local teacher to her school. To do this, he first walks for an hour up to a place the locals call Los Pinos, right at the edge of the 400foot deep gorge(峡谷)of the Negro valley. Here, one end of a thick metal cable has been fixed to a wooden post. The cable stretches right across the deep valley to the other side, a kilometer away.A metal hook is fixed to the cable, with leather straps hanging from it. Diaz fastens the straps around his shoulders and waist, does a quick safety check and then, without hesitating, throws himself off the edge of the mountain. Attached to the cable by only the metal hook, he rapidly picks up speed and soon he is racing through the air. Crossing the valley by wire takes him 30 seconds, instead of the two hours it would take him to walk down through the rain forest and climb up the steep muddy slopes on the other side.As Diaz begins his trip, Diana Rios, a 23yearold elementary teacher, is waiting on the other side of the gorge for the moment when he will e racing through the mist towards her at 100 mph. She will then return with him, hanging on to him as he goes back along the cable. Diana had no idea when she took the teaching job that just getting to work in the village school would be dangerous.“At first I wanted to cry,” she says, clutching her hook as the metal cable starts to rattle(喀哒作响)violently at Diazs approach. “But I soon got used to it.”She still prefers to go with Diaz, though, rather than making the frightening and dangerous crossing on her own.For the inhabitants(居民)of Los Pinos, the wire cable is a lifeline. For more than 50 years, it has served the munity as a form of transport to and from the rest of the world. Everything that es arrives via the cablebricks and wood for building, sacks of rice and corn. Pregnant mothers, who must get to the nearest clinic, cross the wire during the darkness of the night, returning with their newborn babies. It is dangerous, but they have no choice. This time Robinson Diaz makes a perfect landing on Dianas side of the gorge. For him, the dangers of this daily journey are insignificant. “What Im really scared of is snakes,” he says.“This is nothing in parison.”Then Diana straps herself into her harness and hooks herself up to the wire behind Diaz, holding on to him tightly. He turns, flashes her a smile, releases the brake and kicks away. Within seconds, teacher and cableracer have disappeared back into the mist. 1Robinson Diaz has a difficult task every morning because he has to_.Aclimb a long way up a mountainBget to the edge of a valleyCwalk through a dangerous areaDhelp someone get to work答案:D文章第一段第二句“every morning he faces the difficult task of taking the local teacher to her school.” 2In the second paragraph, the writer suggests that Diaz is_ _.Aconfident about what he is doingBunaware of the danger he facesCcareless about his own safetyDuncertain of what he is doing答案:A第二段第二句提到“他迅速地检查后毫不犹豫地来到山的另外一边”,可知他对于自己所做的事非常自信。3Diana Rios found out how she would travel to work_.Awhen she was a studentBwhen she saw the cableCafter she had met DiazDafter she took the job答案:C第三段提到“Diana had no idea when she took the teaching job”可知她在遇到Diaz之前并不知道情况。4What is Dianas opinion about the journey now?AShe enjoys it.BShe no longer finds it a problem.CIt makes her feel very frightened.DIt would be impossible without Diaz.答案:B第三段提到“But I soon got used to it.”She still prefers to go with Diaz, though,.” 5What does Diaz say about using the cable?AHe does not find it frightening as other things.BHe does not think there is any risk.CHe is happy that he can help the teacher.DHe is worried about the danger of snakes. BI have always been in a hurry and tried to finish too many things. I never had time to think about my beliefs until my daughter, Paula, fell ill. She was in a a(昏迷) for a year and I took care of her at home, until she died in my arms in December of 1992.During that year everything stopped for me. There was nothing to dojust cry and remember. However, that year also gave me an opportunity to reflect upon(反思)my life. I discovered that my beliefs and the way I lived my life had changed.Paula worked as a volunteer helping women and children. She never had any money, but she needed very little. When she died she had nothing and she needed nothing. During her illness I had to let go of everything: her laughter, her voice, her grace, her beauty, her pany and finally her spirit. When she died, I thought I had lost everything, but then I realized I still had something that I had given herthe love. Paula taught me a lesson that is now my belief: you only have what you give. Its by spending yourself that you bee rich. Now I like to give much more than to receive. I am happier when I love than when I am loved. I love my husband, my son, my grandchildren, my mother, my dog, and frankly I dont know if they even like me. But who cares? Loving them is my joy.Give, give, givewhat is the point of having experience, knowledge or talent if I dont give it away? Of having stories if I dont tell them to others? Of having wealth if I dont share it? I dont intend to be buried with any of it! It is in giving that I connect with others and with everything. It is in giving that I feel the spirit of my daughter inside me, like a soft presence. 6The authors daughter died of/from_.A. an accident B. overwork C. an illness D. cancer答案:C细节理解题。根据第一段第二句“I never had time to think about my beliefs until my daughter, Paula, fell ill”可知答案选C。7Whats the effect of her daughters death on the author?AThe author was regretful, for she hadnt taken good care of her daughter.BThe author was too sad to go on with her work.CThe author became more selfish than before.DThe authors beliefs and lifestyle were changed. 根据第二段最后一句“I discovered that my beliefs and the way I lived my life had changed”可知答案选D。8It can be inferred from the passage that_.APaula was a teenager who worked as a volunteerBPaula had donated all her money and belongings to othersCthe authors family didnt like herD. the author wanted to be a rich woman答案:B推理判断题。从第三段“She never had any money, but she needed very little. When she died she had nothing and she needed nothing”可知,Paula死去的时候一无所有,联系到前面所说的她是一个帮助妇女儿童的志愿者,可以推断她在生前把自己的钱物全都捐赠给别人了。9Whats the best title of the passage?A. Connect with OthersB. Take Time with Your FamilyC. Dont Always Be in a HurryD. A Lesson from My Daughter答案: D主旨大意题。
