As World Breastfeeding Week gets underway, WHO and its partners are promoting mothers milk as the best way to give babies a healthy start in life.WHO remends exclusively breastfeeding babies until they are six months of age. And it says continued breastfeeding up to two years of age and beyond will greatly reduce child deaths caused by infection and malnutrition (营养不良) in developing countries.WHO estimates 3.5 million children die every year of malnutrition. It says up to 1.5 million children could be saved by increasing breastfeeding. Thats because mothers milk contains important nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are found nowhere else. And these provide immunities (免疫力) against a host of infections and diseases. It defends the baby against all the potential microbia that can affect him. So, that is why the child will have less episodes of diarrhea (腹泻), will have less experiences with respiratory_ infections and also less likely to die because of mon childhood illnesses, especially diarrhea and pneumonia (肺炎)WHO acknowledges that breastfeeding may not be appropriate in all cases. For instance, if a mother is HIVpositive, she could transmit the disease to her baby through breastfeeding. It might be better for mothers to choose formula milk.According to the environment, the risk of the baby dying because of other illnesses, other infections diseases might be a lot higher than before. For example, many developing countries do not have safe water and mixing polluted water with powdered formula is a mon cause of death among infants.WHO says mothers milk is best everywhere in the world, in rich and poor countries alike. It was not until my junior year in high school that I developed an interest, love, and skill for writing poetry.Back in elementary school, I loved to write stories. I would write stories on post it notes and anywhere I could. Yet when I had to write a limerick (五行打油诗) for an assignment, I could not wrap my head around poetry. I had a very hard time figuring out how to rhyme words and have the words make sense. I eventually tossed the paper with the attempted limerick in the trash. I did not try my hand at poetry again until several years later. Many years later in my freshman year of high school, my English teacher gave my class a poetry project as an assignment. I still remember my limerick assignment and was afraid of doing the poetry. For the project, we had to analyze a poem and write a response to it. I choose to respond to Robert Frosts poem Fire and Ice. I also wrote my own poem first. I bee really excited when writing the poem. Two years later, I started writing poetry, as a hobby and for fun. To learn how good or bad my poems were, I handed them in to some magazines and contests. I won second place in the North Carolina Poetry Societys Sherry Pruitt Award Contest with a poem called The Ocean, and had my two poems published as high merit (优等) poems. I have continued to write poetry, and have even self published three collections of poetry in both print and ebook formats, which can be found at my store on Lulu. Now, I love writing poetry, but I dont hate writing short stories. I just find it more difficult and not my style of writing, even though I still write short stories occasionally. 语篇解读:本文作者叙述了自己写诗的经历。5When the author was a pupil, he _.Aliked writing storiesBwas good at writing poetryCcould understand poetry wellDwas often praised by his teacher解析:选A细节理解题。根据第二段“Back in elementary school, I loved to write stories.”可知,答案为A。6When given the poetry project in high school, the author was _.AexcitedBannoyedCconfident Dworried解析:选D推理判断题。根据第三段“I still remember my limerick assignment and was afraid of doing the poetry project.”可推断,答案为D。7The author took up writing poetry as a hobby when he _.Awas in Grade Three in high school Bworked as a storekeeperCwas in Grade One in high school Dwas at college解析:选A推理判断题。根据第三段“Many years later in my freshman year of high school”及第四段第一句“Two years later, I started writing poetry, as a hobby and for fun.”可推断,答案为A。8How did the author increase his confidence in writing poetry?AHe wrote a lot of poems and asked advice from his teacher.BHe published three collections of poetry by himself.CHe submitted his poems to magazines contests.DHe gave up writing stories and only wrote poetry.解析:选C细节理解题。根据第四段“To learn how good or bad my poems were, I handed them in to some magazines and contests.”可知,答案为C。
