I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,By William Wordsworth,外国语学院2011级3班 唐艺嘉 21号,简介 “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” was written by William Wordsworth, the representative poet of the early romanticism. As a great poet of nature, William Wordsworth was the first to find words for the most elementary sensations of man face to face with natural phenomena. These sensations are universal and old but, once expressed in his poetry, become charmingly beautiful and new. His deep love for nature runs through short lyrics such as “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” .,Introduction and Background,It was written by William Wordsworth, the representative poet of the early romanticism. As a great poet of nature, William Wordsworth was the first to find words for the most elementary sensations of man face to face with natural phenomena. These sensations are universal and old but, once expressed in his poetry, become charmingly beautiful and new. His deep love for nature can be awarded of through his lovely and vivid description about natural things with his figurative language. A visit to Ullswate (阿尔斯沃特湖畔) on April 15, 1802 by Dorothy Wordsworth, from The Grasmere Journal - Thursday 15 April, 1802.,I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high oer vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.,独自漫游似浮云, 青山翠谷上飘荡; 一刹那瞥见一丛丛、 一簇簇水仙金黄; 树荫下,明湖边, 和风吹拂舞翩跹。,Wordsworth, in the poem, employs figurative language to evoke not only the visual effect but also the emotional response. e.g. in line 1 simile his lonely and melancholy mood with the image of “cloud”. Wordsworth goes further to communicate his emotion and meaning by his thoughtful tone. The choose of the word “lonely” in “I wandered lonely as a cloud” instead of other words like carefree, leisure or jolly convey to us the poets depression and disconsolateness at the very beginning.,The poet makes great use of the “music ”of the language to achieve sound beauty in addition to convey meaning. He employs rhyme in “a, b, a, b, c, c” pattern to receive emphasis as a musical effect. (e.g. “cloud” (a), “hills” (b), “crowd” (a), “daffodils” (b), “trees” (c), “breeze” (c) in stanza 1). He also achieves musical quality by the management of alliteration (e.g. “high and hills” in line 2 )and assonance (e.g. “beneath the trees in line 5” ) and consonance (e.g. “ vales and hills” in line 2 ).,Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company: I gazed -and gazed -but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought.,仿佛群星璀璨, 沿银河闪霎晶莹; 一湾碧波边缘, 绵延,望不尽; 只见万千无穷, 随风偃仰舞兴浓。 花边波光潋滟, 怎比得繁花似锦; 面对如此良伴, 诗人怎不欢欣! 凝视,凝视,流连不止; 殊不知引起悠悠情思;,The memory of the daffodils is given permanence ,particularly through comparison the stars. This is in contrast to the transitory nature of life examined in other works. In the 3rd stanza the poet gradually shifts his attention from the outer world to the inner world. He catches sight of daffodils stretching as far as the eyes can see and finds himself in the midst of nature, his loneliness turns into relaxation and joy. Thus the shift of the poems mood from sadness to happiness manifests the theme-we come to realize the great power of nature that may influence our life deeply as revealed in the poem.,For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils,兀自倚憩息, 岑寂,幽然冥想; 蓦地花影闪心扉, 独处方能神往; 衷心喜悦洋溢, 伴水仙、舞不息。,Wordsworth simply tells us of an experience he had and what it meant to him, and he also points out that it is this type of experience that you dont know how valuable it will be to you when it happens; it is later, after you have used the memory of it to cheer you up many times in your life that you realize how much it affected you.,In the final stanza, the poet says his heart “dances with the daffodils.” This suggests the harmony of the outer and inner worlds, revealing the power of imagination. In this poem, the poet also seeks to express his emotions by providing the sense impressions he has through imagery. He depicts a picture in which “a host of golden daffodils (visual imagery) fluttering and dancing in the breeze” (kinaesthetic动感的 imagery) so vividly that it appeals richly to our senses and to our imagination.,Composition and Theme It revisits the familiar subjects of nature and memory, this time with a particularly (simple) spare, musical eloquence. Form: The four six-line stanzas of this poem follow a quatrain-couplet(四行诗、双行联韵体) rhyme scheme: ABABCC. Each line is metered in iambic tetrameter(抑扬格四音步). Plot: the poets wandering and his discovery of a field of daffodils by a lake, the memory of which pleases him and comforts him when he is lonely, bored, or restless.,The poem tells us that the bliss we can enjoy in the real sense of the term if we can merge in the nature. Actual contact with the daffodils is not the point. Only when he reconstructs the moment with his inward eye does he actually feel pleasure from the experience. The poet is trapped. He cannot feel the world until pulls it through memory (time+imagination). He doesnt dance with the daffodils until he is alone and can reflect on them, and at this moment, isolated from the actual daffodils, he really only reflects on himself.,In William Wordsworths “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”, the daffodils become much more than mere flowers. They are a symbol of natural beauty and, more importantly, symbolize living a life as rich in experience and sensation as would make a life worth living. ,
